Sindh govt fully mobilised to deal with rain challenge: Sharjeel

KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the Sindh government is completely mobilized against the recent rains and the broader impact of climate change in the country. The recent rains have caused severe damage in the north, whereas Sindh has faced torrential rains and damaging floods repeatedly since 2010 and has gained rich experience in coping with such emergency scenarios. If any other province requires assistance, the Sindh government stands ready to provide all possible support. Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the administration, under the leadership of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, is fully alert, with all necessary machinery available around the clock. He stated that, on the instructions of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, all party workers and leadership are standing with the people, and public service remains the top priority. He also assured full coordination and support from the Sindh government in light of the recent visits by the Governor of Punjab. Sharjeel Inam Memon strongly condemned the unfortunate incident in Balochistan, stating that those involved in the killing of innocent people must be given the strictest punishment. He added that the Pakistan Peoples' Party strongly denounces such acts of violence and stands in solidarity with the victims. He stated that the Pakistan Peoples' Party is currently the largest party in the Senate and is actively playing its role in promoting peace, stability, and development at the federal level. Sharjeel Memon stated that, to address the challenges faced by the business community, the Sindh government has launched an online one-window operation aimed at eliminating red tape. He said that this is a golden opportunity for business in Pakistan, and the Sindh government is making every effort to provide all possible facilities to industrialists and traders. He said that strict action has been taken regarding the recent building collapse incident in Karachi. Out of 61 extremely dangerous buildings, 59 have already been evacuated. Immediate action is being taken against illegal constructions, and several such structures have been demolished. He added that the Sindh government is providing six months' rent to affected tenants to ensure they do not face hardships. He appealed to the public to promptly report any illegal constructions, as they pose a serious threat to human lives—something that cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. Sharjeel Memon said that mega projects in Karachi are progressing rapidly. The Jam Sadiq Bridge is expected to be completed and opened to the public by August, while construction work is also underway on Shahrah-e-Bhutto. The Yellow Line and Red Line BRT projects are nearing completion. He said that work is being prioritized in the areas where the public is facing inconvenience. The Sindh Chief Minister is holding regular meetings on the K-4 project, which is also expected to be completed soon. Sharjeel Memon said that while the punishment of a political leader is not a cause for celebration, attacks involving arson and the siege of state property are absolutely unacceptable. He condemned the setting fire to the People's Bus Service, ambulances, and Quaid-e-Azam's house, calling it the worst form of terrorism. He emphasized that it is the state's responsibility to bring such perpetrators to justice in accordance with the law. He said that the mastermind behind the May 9th arson attack is currently in Adiala Jail. While he kept his own children abroad, he took children from ordinary families onto the streets and used them against the state. This is not politics but terrorism, which must be stopped at all costs. Sharjeel Memon further stated that, for the first time in history, action has been taken against senior government officials involved in illegal constructions. Many constructions were carried out without approved plans, and following surveys, action is being taken against those responsible. Legal proceedings are underway against builders found violating the law to ensure that no one is allowed to jeopardize human lives in the future. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Sindh govt announces major relief for farmers hit by floods

KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the major relief for farmers affected by floods, stating that the Sindh government has taken a big step in raising relief grants significantly for victims of the record 2022 flood catastrophe. The package includes compensation for shattered crops, provision of seed and monetary support for rehabilitation of hit lands. In a statement, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon said that the increase in relief funds for flood-affected farmers is part of the Sindh Flood Rehabilitation Program, which has already been recognized as the world's largest disaster housing initiative. He said that the Sindh cabinet has also approved the establishment of new industrial zones in Sukkur and Hyderabad, which will be developed under a public-private partnership. A total of 951 acres of land in Hyderabad will be transferred to the Sindh Economic Zones Management Company, paving the way for over 55,000 employment opportunities in the province and giving a new boost to the provincial economy. Sharjeel Memon also added that the Sindh cabinet has also approved an interest-free loan of Rs 10.56 billion for Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, where a 36-kilometer pipeline would be laid from Damloti to DHA. The project will ease the acute shortage of water, as DHA needs 15 MGD of water daily but receives only 5 MGD. The project also includes the construction of a pumping station, filtration plant, and reservoir, with a completion target set for 11 months. He said that the cabinet has approved a memorandum of understanding with Sindh Bank to expedite the activation of the Benazir Hari Card. Through this card, farmers will receive subsidies on agricultural inputs, soft loans, and financial assistance for disaster preparedness. So far, over 237,000 farmers have been registered, and the verification of 88,871 applications has been completed. Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the Sindh government is taking practical steps for the welfare and development of the people, with the resolution of public issues and transparent governance among its top priorities. Sharjeel urges Nawaz, Shehbaz to rein in PML-N ministers over canal row

Listen to article Sindh's senior minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Tuesday called on Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to restrain their ministers from issuing 'provocative statements,' warning that escalating tensions over disputed canal projects could destabilise interprovincial relations. Speaking at a joint press conference in Karachi alongside senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders Nasir Hussain Shah and Aijaz Damrah, Sharjeel Memon expressed concern over what he described as irresponsible remarks by some PML-N ministers. 'If this approach continues, we may not be able to stop our own spokespersons from responding in kind,' the minister cautioned. He reiterated PPP's firm and longstanding opposition to the construction of controversial canal projects, arguing they undermine Sindh's water rights. Sharjeel Memon said the party holds documented evidence of Sindh's consistent opposition since the project's approval by federal water regulators during the caretaker government. 'We have official records proving that the Sindh chief minister objected at every stage,' he asserted. According to Sharjeel, Sindh's representatives voiced dissent when the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) issued no-objection certificates during the caretaker setup, allowing the controversial projects to move ahead. 'Even back then, we made our position clear,' he said. He revealed that Federal Minister Rana Sanaullah had contacted him twice in recent days, and that Shehbaz Sharif had expressed interest in finding a resolution. 'The prime minister is the leader of the whole country, not just one province. He should address these valid concerns and remove the reservations of the people,' the minister added. While defending the right to peaceful protest, the minister urged demonstrators to avoid blocking roads and disrupting economic activities. 'Livestock trucks and export consignments are stuck. Protesting is a constitutional right, but public inconvenience must be avoided,' he said. The minister also drew attention to the broader water-sharing issue, claiming that Sindh has not received its fair share of water under the 1991 Water Accord. He demanded the federal government fulfil its legal and constitutional obligations to ensure equitable distribution. Sharjeel criticised some PML-N ministers for adopting a confrontational tone, labelling them as 'non-political' elements creating unnecessary tensions. 'Sensible political leaders defuse situations — they don't inflame them,' he said. He concluded by welcoming Sanaullah's recent outreach but warned that continued provocation would leave PPP with no choice but to respond through its own political channels. The growing row comes amid wider tensions between the PPP-led Sindh government and the PML-N-dominated federal administration over resource-sharing, governance, and provincial rights.
