2025 Hall of Fame: Packers legend Sterling Sharpe's induction was long overdue
The point of the Pro Football Hall of Fame or the hall in any other sport is to recognize the absolute elite performers in that sport. That was Sterling Sharpe's level. Sharpe retired after the 1994 season and it wasn't his choice. Sharpe suffered a stinger late in the season on what looked like a routine block on a run. It was his second stinger in two weeks. Sharpe played the next week against the Buccaneers despite the injury. He had 132 yards and three touchdowns. Then he was gone. Doctors found Sharpe had a looseness between the top two vertebrae in his neck and would need surgery. After seven seasons for the Green Bay Packers, Sharpe's career was over. It was only seven seasons, but the excellence Sharpe displayed in that relatively short time was undoubtedly worthy of induction. It's hard to make it with only seven seasons, but not many players have a dominant stretch like Sharpe did. Three decades after Sharpe was done playing, the Hall's gatekeepers recognized that. Sterling Sharpe was dominant Sharpe was the seventh overall pick of the 1988 NFL Draft, selected by what was, at the time, a horrible Packers team. While Sharpe wasn't still playing when the Packers finally won a Super Bowl, he was a big part of their rise in the 1990s. Sharpe had a reasonable 791 yards as a rookie, and then took off in 1989. He led the NFL with 90 catches, 12 of which went for touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl, the first of five times he'd get that honor. He also was first-team All-Pro for the first time. He'd be an All-Pro two more times before he retired. Sharpe was already one of the NFL's best receivers when the Packers traded for a new quarterback in 1992. Brett Favre took over as the team's starter early that season and quickly found that the best way to succeed was find No. 84 and throw it to him, over and over. Sharpe won the NFL's receiving triple crown in 1992, leading the NFL with 108 catches, 1,461 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 108 receptions set an NFL single-season record. He broke that record the following season with 112 catches. In his final season, he caught a league-best 18 touchdowns. Jerry Rice was the gold standard among receivers in that era, but Sharpe wasn't that far behind. He led the NFL in receptions three times, in receiving yards once and receiving touchdowns twice. He was unquestionably one of the best receivers of his era. And isn't that what the Hall of Fame is supposed to be about? Sharpe finally gets the call Sharpe played in only two playoff games, though that was hardly his fault. He had 229 yards and four touchdowns in those two postseason games, and his first playoff game was probably the highlight of his great career. At the end of the 1993 season, with the Packers back in the playoffs for just the second time since 1972, Sharpe scored three touchdowns in a thrilling wild-card game against the Lions. His final touchdown was in the final minute, when he got behind the Lions defense and Favre hit him with an amazing pass to the end zone for a 40-yard score. It was the Packers' second playoff win since Super Bowl II 26 years earlier. Despite undeniable greatness on the field, Sharpe waited for the Hall of Fame to let him in. Sharpe wasn't always warm and fuzzy with the media like his brother Shannon, and maybe that worked against him too. Shannon Sharpe made the Hall of Fame in 2011. His brother finally made it 14 years later. They're the first brothers to both be enshrined in Canton. Sharpe said after he was voted in that he didn't worry about whether he'd get into the Hall of Fame. But others wanted to see him get his rightful spot among the game's legends. "I don't care how long or short his career was," former Packers general manager Ron Wolf, also a Hall of Famer, said via "He was a dominant player in his era. Period. Southwestern Queenslanders warned of potential snow this weekend
Southern Queenslanders are being warned they could see snowfall this weekend as an early burst of the 'Ekka westerlies' brings wintry conditions to the Sunshine State's southeast. Forecast models indicate Saturday morning is shaping up as the most likely time snow could fall down to elevations of 1200m. Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe says the chance of snow will largely depend on the position of an approaching low pressure system. 'There is definitely the potential for snow in southern Queensland this weekend,' he said. 'It is going to be a little bit touch and go, but it definitely cannot be ruled out. 'There is going to be a low pressure system and exactly how it guides the rain across NSW and Queensland will govern whether there is going to be any snow in southern Queensland.' Mr Sharpe said the mountain peaks along the Queensland-NSW border would be the most likely locations for snow. 'We're talking about your usual suspects, the tallest mountains in southern Queensland,' he said. 'The tallest mountain in southern Queensland is Mount Superbus, at 1375m. 'Even in the wetter scenario, it's a decent chance to get the snow right up at the top. 'Snow could fall as low as about 1200m, there is some significant elevation there in the Southern Downs.' Mr Sharpe said the more southerly the low pressure system, the better the chance for snowfall. 'If the low pressure system that's bringing the rain to NSW is too far north, then it will bring rain to Queensland and the air won't be quite cold enough,' he said. 'There won't be enough cold dry air mixing into the system on the Queensland border. 'But if the low is further south, and there's less rain to Queensland, there's actually going to be colder air in that system, and therefore better potential for snow.' Snow fell near Stanthorpe last year, with footage by Stanthorpe Holiday Park capturing a flurry along the New England Highway at Severnlea. Outside of Queensland Bureau of Meteorology Senior meteorologist Angus Hines predicted 'patchy falls' across much of South Australia and NSW on Tuesday, with a chance of rain in Victoria and Tasmania. 'Not as much rain as the recent wet weather event, but a nice follow up of 2-10mm over broad areas,' Mr Hines said. 'This weather system will have some colder air with it, and a good few centimetres of snow in the mountains. 'This will clear on Wednesday, although cold winds and patchy showers continue. 'This means further sporadic and light wet weather for most places south of a line from Perth across to Port Macquarie.'

Wet start to weekend for nearly all capitals expected as rainband sweeps country and delivers showers to millions of Australians
A wet start to the weekend has been forecast for millions of Australians, with almost all capital cities likely to experience at least showers and a high chance of downpours being forecast for some. Only Perth is expected to steer clear of potentially wet conditions on Saturday as a rainband crosses the east of the country bringing showers and cold weather from Queensland to Tasmania. Sky News Meteorologist Rob Sharpe outlined the rainy outlook for states set to be affected, including Queensland, where the rainband 'looks significant' in the Saturday forecast. 'Particularly from the northwest all the way to the southern inland. And then, around sunset, it will be reaching the coastline and could head all the way up to Rockhampton and Gladstone as well by the nighttime,' Sharpe said. 'It will clear out pretty quickly for the southwest. Once the rain stops, the sun will quickly come out and it will be cooler than usual for most areas.' The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast says there is very high chance of rain for Brisbane on Saturday, most likely in the afternoon and evening, with between 8 to 20 mm of rain expected. Rain is also set to run across New South Wales throughout the day, and Sharpe said central coastal areas could expect to see patchy wet weather that could clear out 'quite quickly'. 'So, by lunchtime, it will be done, even up towards Newcastle. But for the areas on and west of the ranges, they'll be still some showers coming and going through the day and down close to the Vic border they'll be rain,' he said. A partly cloudy day with a very high chance of showers, most likely in the morning, is expected for Sydney on Saturday, according to the BOM. In Victoria, Sharpe said central and northeastern areas were likely to see the bulk of the state's wet weather throughout the day, and the BOM has forecast between 1 to 15 mm of possible rain for Melbourne. Periods of rain are also expected for Tasmania, particularly in the morning, Sharpe said. 'But for South Australia, it's cold, it's showery, and that wet weather will target the southern agricultural with isolated showers to the northern agricultural, and even some of the southern pastorals as well,' he said.
