You won't believe the twists in this psychological thriller starring Cate Blanchett — and you can stream it now on Hulu
Last we saw Cate Blanchett onscreen, she was — spoiler alert! — popping up in a surprise cameo in the final episode of Netflix's "Squid Game," as a Los Angeles recruiter for an American version of the deadly games. It's just the latest role in the actor's incredibly varied and vibrant filmography, which has spanned spy thrillers ("Black Bag"), horror comedies ("Rumors") and psychological dramas ("Tár") in recent years. That surprise "Squid Game" appearance had us thinking about the Aussie star's previous roles, one of the most memorable being her turn as a tempted teacher in the 2006 Richard Eyre-directed "Notes on a Scandal." Blanchett's performance as a woman embroiled in a scandalous affair is tremendous, is made even better by scene mate Judi Dench's darkly brilliant turn as a lonely veteran educator who becomes besotted by Blanchett's character, until she uncovers the fellow teacher's illicit affair with an underage student. "Notes on a Scandal" is currently available to stream on Hulu — here's why you should add it to your watch list. Get both Disney Plus and Hulu in one bundle, one of the best streaming deals around. The arrival of willowy, charismatic new art teacher Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) ruffles more than a few feather brushes at St. George's comprehensive school in London — the statuesque blonde looks a whole lot like Cate Blanchett, so all the intrigue is certainly understandable. And one of her many secret admirers is veteran history teacher Barbara Covett (Judi Dench), who has grown bitter and lonely in her spinster existence. Barbara strikes up a friendship with Sheba and thrills over their close bond. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. That is, until she discovers that Sheba is having a secret affair with one of her teenage students (Andrew Simpson), despite him being very much underage and Sheba being married to the much older Richard (played by Bill Nighy). As Barbara becomes the keeper of Sheba's explosive secret, the relationship between the women turns dark and territorial. "Notes on a Scandal" is a true tour-de-force two-hander between two of the industry's finest and most skilled performers. Both Dench and Blanchett rightfully earned Oscar nominations for their performances (for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively) in the thriller with Patrick Marber's sharply adapted screenplay and Philip Glass's original score also recognized by the Academy. With "unshowy authority," the filmmaker "gets the best out of Dench and Blanchett and, with great shrewdness, elicits from these two actors all the little tensions and exasperations — as well as the genuine tenderness — in their tragically fraught relationship," writes Peter Bradshaw for The Guardian. Richard Eye's film feels like a pulpy throwback to the kind of smart erotic thrillers that dominated the 1990s. "Sexy, aspirational and post-politically correct, 'Notes on a Scandal' could turn out to be the 'Fatal Attraction' of the noughties," Carina Chocano surmised for the Los Angeles Times. And for The Times, James Christopher sums up the darkly delicious "Notes on a Scandal" most simply, calling it "a potent and evil pleasure". Watch "Notes on a Scandal" on Hulu now

Inside Operation ‘Cattitude': A Pet Food Giant's Mission to Understand Cats
The pet food giant had a problem. Cats were rapidly catching up to dogs as America's favorite pets, but the company was filled with people who didn't fully understand the mercurial creatures—or their owners. So Mars launched a mission to get its dog-loving workers inside cats' heads. As part of an internal operation called 'Cattitude,' the maker of Whiskas food and Temptations treats organized visits from vets and animal nutritionists. There were power point presentations. Staffers were paired with cat parents. One afternoon, senior bosses walked around the office with cat ears. The goal: Reorient the entire team—from those who formulate new products to those putting together advertisements—around one of cat parents' chief sources of angst: 'feline insecurity,' a fear of cats' indifference to their owners' affection. (Type 'Does my cat' into Google, and the top search is 'love me.' The second is 'know I love her.') Cat parents say that for too long, the world has misguidedly treated their pets like dogs with smaller bodies and less need for attention. But as Gen Z spurs a surge in cat households, cat culture is getting a closer look. Jonathan the cat assesses various Mars products. 'We need to drive cats back up to the spotlight they deserve,' said Helen Hastings, a Mars executive who helped spearhead the Cattitude campaign. Hastings has three dogs but says she loves cats. Marketing executive Fernando Silva was firmly on team dog when he moved to Mars. Growing up in Mexico, Silva said he was surrounded by cat stereotypes: They were aloof, cold and would trade their parents for a better treat. Every villain, including the bad guy from the Smurfs, had a cat. When Mars launched Cattitude, Silva immersed himself in feline culture. He visited with a dozen cat families and said he was struck by how deeply people connected to them as companions, or equals. 'It's a more mature relationship,' said Silva, vice president of marketing for Sheba cat food. 'Many people told us: They could walk out the door anytime they want and never come back, but they chose me.' Such insights have changed the advertising strategy. The team has moved away from previous campaigns featuring regal, sophisticated cats that reinforced their reputation as haughty creatures. Now they run every initiative through a filter: Is this rooted in cat parent truth? An actual cat owner is now consulted on every campaign, and casting one is mandatory. In a coming campaign called 'Ignore to Adore,' the premise is that you could be the most universally loved human but you still might think the cat doesn't care. 'You could be Taylor Swift, moving masses, making billions, but your cat still might not always come running,' said Silva. (Swift has shared about her cats shunning her with 'silence, ambivalence, and judgmental brush offs.') A centerpiece of addressing feline insecurity is ramping up research on what tastes appeal to cats. Selective hunters that have never been fully domesticated, cats are famously nonchalant about food. But researchers who study feline palatability are beginning to discover that what has long been interpreted as aloofness might be an absence of certain taste buds. Scott McGrane, cat dad to Dexter, Ripley and Newt, leads a sensory science team for Mars' research center in the U.K., that set out to understand what the notoriously fussy eaters like and what turns them off. One early discovery: Cats can't taste sweetness, which explained their apparent indifference to certain treats. Scott McGrane, who leads a sensory science team for Mars' research center in the U.K. at home with his cats, Ripley (left) and team has had several breakthroughs on cats' taste preferences. Two years ago McGrane and his team had a breakthrough. With the help of a panel of two dozen cats who show their taste preferences by how much flavored water they consume, the team found felines have receptors to taste umami and kokumi foods. The discovery finally provided a definitive reason why cats gravitate toward tuna. They are experimenting with other flavors and protein sources to give cats a more satisfying feeding experience. Mars also introduced lickable spoons to be consumed from a parent's hand to create what the company calls an 'enhanced bonding moment.' Pekka sizes up a treat from marketing executive Fernando Silva. Feline insecurity can be self-fulfilling. If you think your cat doesn't care, you might be less likely to shower them with perks. That may be why dogs get way more treats. Mars launched a campaign in May that spotlights the 'treat gap' by the numbers: Dogs are nearly 32% more likely to get daily treats than cats in dogs-only and cats-only households; in homes with both, 38% of parents said they don't give the same number of treats. Cat people at Mars now say they feel seen in a workplace that is a canine wonderland where employees' dogs roam the halls. The company hosts regular kitten yoga sessions at its Franklin, Tenn., offices. Colleagues share cat memes on Teams and WhatsApp. One team bought matching jean jackets and attached 'I Love Cats' decals. Tiffany Bierer, who works in research and development, said Cattitude prompted her to be more openly effusive about her love for her cats, Olaf, Weber and Svea. Bierer brought some of the giant cat cutouts from the campaign and displayed them around the R&D department. She sometimes still attends meetings wearing cat ears and once did a sales presentation in a cat outfit. 'It's very easy to see the dog people because they bring their dogs in, right?' she said. 'But you didn't know the cat people until Cattitude came about.' Mars' Helen Hastings and Tiffany Bierer at the company's offices, where it hosts regular kitten yoga sessions. This Sacred Mountain in Yemen Is Where Kingdoms Fought & Prophets Fell
This Sacred Mountain in Yemen Is Where Kingdoms Fought & Prophets Fell Yemen is often described as the birthplace of Arabia—not as a poetic claim, but as a fact grounded in geography and history. This is the land where ancient kingdoms like Sheba, Himyar, and Qataban rose and fell; where Arabic, in some of its earliest and most foundational forms, took shape. It's also where coffee was first cultivated and traded—long before it became a global commodity or a café menu item, it was simply a Yemeni crop, shipped from the port of Mocha. Yet beyond the ruins of ancient states and the legacy of coffee, Yemen is, at its core, a landscape. One defined by steep altitudes, deep valleys, and a quiet kind of permanence. Nowhere is that more clearly felt than in Jabal An-Nabī Shuʿayb—the highest peak in Yemen, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Arabian tectonic plate. Rising 3,666 meters above sea level, just west of Sana'a in the Harazi subregion of the Sarawat range, this mountain doesn't shout for attention. It doesn't need to. Unlike iconic peaks elsewhere, it hasn't been claimed by tourism. No guided treks. No glossy brochures. But for the communities who live nearby, it holds quiet weight—an enduring presence that doesn't require explanation or decoration. Part of that significance is rooted in its name. The mountain is named after Shuʿayb ibn Mahdam ibn Dhī-Mahdam al-Hadūrī, a prophet distinct from the better-known Shuʿayb of Midian. According to classical Islamic historians such as Al-Hamdani, he was sent to the people of Mikhlaf Hadhur, an ancient region in western Yemen. His message, however, was rejected, and he was ultimately killed by the very people he was sent to guide. In response, divine punishment followed: God is said to have sent Bakht Nasr—often identified with Nebuchadnezzar—who destroyed their town. Because of this legacy, many locals believe that Shuʿayb's tomb lies somewhere on the mountain itself. The site has since carried both religious reverence and historical meaning. In fact, the mountain is also referred to as Jabal Hadhur, echoing its place within the region once known as Mikhlaf Hadhur. Even so, the significance of Jabal An-Nabī Shuʿayb isn't only spiritual or cultural—it's geological as well. The mountain is a prominent part of the Tertiary volcanic series that forms much of Yemen's rugged highlands. Its rock formations have attracted scientific attention, most notably from Dieter R. Fuchs, a German mineralogist who conducted extensive research on their geochemical composition and petrogenesis. His studies, which culminated in a full academic thesis, explored the origins and formation processes of this volcanic terrain, placing Jabal An-Nabī Shuʿayb firmly within the broader narrative of Earth's geological evolution. Although the summit isn't snow-capped like peaks in Lebanon or Syria, it's not untouched by winter. Snowfall has been reported at the top, and frost is common during colder months. Wind conditions are severe—gusts at the summit can be intense, often making the area difficult to access or stay on for long. In April 2019, Ahmad Zein Al-Yafei, a security officer from Dubai, claimed to have reached the summit in 69 hours, where he raised a Dubai Police flag—a rare account of a successful ascent to the restricted peak. Taken together, the mountain exists at the intersection of myth, memory, and matter. It doesn't seek to represent Yemen—but in many ways, it reflects it: layered, complex, and not easily reduced. Unfortunately, amid decades of conflict, Yemen has come to be seen almost exclusively through the lens of war. International attention rarely moves beyond political breakdowns or emergency headlines. But behind those headlines is a country with a landscape that defies reduction—mountains like Jabal An-Nabī Shuʿayb, volcanic highlands, untouched coasts, and fertile valleys that continue to shape daily life. Yemen's natural beauty hasn't vanished—it's just been overshadowed. And remembering that matters. Because a place isn't defined only by what breaks it, but also by what quietly holds.

Woman Stops To Stroke 'Random Cat'—Then Things Take Unexpected Turn
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A woman has gone viral on TikTok after stopping to stroke a black and white cat on the street—only to find herself unexpectedly pinned in place when the feline jumped into her lap. The TikTok, posted by the user @groupchatgetaway, shows the woman crouching on the sidewalk to pet the cat, who clearly enjoys the attention. The video quickly took off, racking up 1.7 million views and over 199,000 likes. "When stroking a random cat in the street takes a sudden turn," reads the on-screen text as the cat hops up and makes themselves at home in her lap. "Yup stuck here forever now," she added, as the friendly feline settled in, leaving her stuck in an awkward squatting position. She captioned the video: "Friendliest cat ever." While the clip is undeniably adorable, there's actually science behind the cat's behavior. According to Sheba's guide, when a cat chooses to sit in your lap, it's a strong sign of trust and affection. The warmth and closeness help them feel safe, and the behavior can even be a way of showing ownership—yes, they might be claiming you. But should you always stroke cats you meet on the street? PetMD advises caution. While many cats enjoy social interaction, it's best to let them approach you first, watch their body language, and avoid petting areas they might find uncomfortable. Street cats may also carry unknown health risks or simply not be in the mood for human interaction. Fortunately for this TikToker, this particular cat was very much in the mood—for cuddles, attention, and perhaps some emotional support squats. A stock image showing a black and white tuxedo cat. "This is why you do squats, to prepare for this situation," joked one user. "Tuxedo cats are often really loving and clingy (especially the boys)," noted another commenter. "Boss: why are you late?! Uhmm well there was an emergency, meanwhile the emergency," quipped a viewer, referencing the cozy cat. "I love meeting random cats. It makes my day too," said John Hall. "My first cat did this when I went to the shelter to pick one... I felt I had no choice but we spent 13 years together," one user reminisced. And another user added: "It's illegal to move now." Newsweek reached out to@groupchatgetaway for comment via TIkTok. We could not verify the details of the case. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share?
