Remember this actress who played Salman Khan's wife? Fell in love on a movie set, got married, then suddenly disappeared, her name is... In 90s, actress Sheeba Sabir rose to fame with her power-packed performances in films like Miss 420, Sanam Teri Kasam, and Pyar Ka Rog. She also portrayed Salman Khan's wife in fantasy horror film titled Suryavanshi. While the 1992 film tanked at the box office, Sheeba got her dues. Apart from her glorious career in films, she also made an impactful television career with shows like Kutumb, Karishma-The Miracles Of Destiny, Haasil and few others. In 1996, Sheeba got married to her Pyar Ka Rog director Akashdeep Singh. They first met on the sets of Sheeba's film, Miss 420 , and soon their friendship blossomed into love. Reminiscing about their early stages of relationship, Sheeba recalled in an interview with BollywoodShaadis. 'We became good friends, but it was only later when we went to Goa for shooting the film, Miss 420 that the flame of love was ignited. I was attracted by his sense of humour and easy-going nature. I was apprehensive in the beginning. It upset me when people on the sets talked about us. However, I realised that as long as it did not affect my work, it was nobody's business to interfere with my life.' Sheeba said. After their wholesome wedding, the two flew off to Australia for their Honeymoon. Sharing the most happy and memorable moments of their life, Sheeba recalled, 'My parents did not oppose our relationship, as they believed in me. They trusted that I would never get into a relationship with my eyes closed. The fact that both were Punjabis made things easier. After seven months of courtship, we got married on November 27, 1996. We booked three floors of Hotel Horizon in Mumbai for an entire week. Both our families stayed in the hotel, itself. Besides the wedding we had all the other ceremonies like the sangeet, the haldi and the cocktail party at the hotel. Both the families bonded so well that it was difficult to recognise who belonged to the bride's family and who belonged to the groom's. We went to the Gold coast in Australia as backpackers for our honeymoon.' After few years of marriage, the couple embraced parenthood by welcoming two boys- Hriday and Bhavishya. Sheeba collaborated with her husband post-marriage in the television serial Karishma-The Miracles Of Destiny. Praising Akashdeep for not being a typical male chauvinist, she said, 'We understand the pressures of work as we both belong to the same profession. In the glamour industry, you have to make an extra effort to understand the demands of work and the erratic timings. You have to be mature and tolerant. Akash is quite mature. Not only does he understand the pressures of my job, but he also takes care of the home and children when I am working in a double shift.' After captivating audiences with her stellar performances in 90s, Sheeba returned to the limelight with her compelling performance in Alia Bhatt's Jigra. She also made a cameo appearance in Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Khaani. Along with acting, Sheeba also co-produces films and shows, with her husband, Akashdeep.

'Media speculated about Salman Khan's girlfriends, he never spoke about them publicly; Aamir Khan kept his marriage a secret,' says Sheeba about the conservative time in the 90s

During the 90s, actors always maintained a very private life and there was specially a stigma around them regarding their relationships. Stars were told to keep their relationship or marriage a secret, or else it would narrow down their popularity amongst the audience. In a recent interview, actress Sheeba Akashdeep Sabir has opened up on it. She revealed that those times were really different from how things are today. When asked about actors keeping their marriage a secret, Sheeba said during a chat with Filmymantra, "Fans were idolsing the heroes and heroines and were imagining getting married to them. It was a different time. Romance bhi chori chupe hote the. Aaj ke jaise nahi ke haath pakadke ghoom rahe hai. (Actors used to keep their romances hidden, not like today when they hold hands and roam around in public)." She added, "Aamir for the longest time never said he was married. Dono ke liye laagu tha. Aisa nahi ke khali heroines ke liye tha. (This was an unsaid rule for both actors and actresses.)" When the host further asked that people knew about Salman Khan and his girlfriends, giving the example of Sangeeta Bijlani who would often visit the actor on the set. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Birla Evara 3 and 4 BHK from ₹ 1.75 Crore* Birla Estates Learn More Undo Responding to it, Sheeba said, "She would come on set but not in front of the media. The media was speculating. But did you ever see him tell the media that he was dating someone or introducing his girlfriend to the media? People would talk about it but he never spoke about it publicly." She further laughed and said, "Till today, he remains a big brand because he's still single." Sheeba also added that Shah Rukh Khan was an exception as he was already married when he joined the industry and didn't keep it a secret. "He made his own rules," she said. In the same chat, she was asked if it was true that during those times, actresses had wine in a steel glass just so that they didn't want to spoil their image. When asked about such things in the 90s, she said, "I worked with Sunil Dutt in my debut film and we were taught that actors are public figures and people idolise them. Hence they should be careful about doing the right thing and always setting a good example. Nothing wrong in it. It's a good thing." She further added, "Not just actresses but actors also had wine in steel glasses. That's perhaps because they were drinking at the wrong time." Sheeba was recently seen in 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani'.

Photo exhibition showcases the life of social worker Sheeba Ameer

Sheeba Ameer says she loves dressing up. So when photographer G Harikrishnan asked her to tone down on her accessories for the photographs he was taking of hers, Sheeba felt a little unsure. 'In some of the photos, you will see that I have not even combed my hair,' laughs Sheeba. An exhibition of these photographs 'Wings of Desire' is on at the Durbar Hall Art Centre. In black and white and colour, the images chronicle Sheeba's extraordinary life with a touch of whimsy. But who is Sheeba Ameer? The founder of Solace, a voluntary organisation that supports children with long-term illnesses and their families, Sheeba is at the forefront of a campaign that vouches for curative and palliative care for children. Sheeba says life turned upside down when her daughter Niloufa was diagnosed with cancer. She spent 16 years taking care of her, oscillating between moments of utter despair, helplessness and fear. It was also when she started seeing life differently. 'We were able to provide Nilu the best treatment and facilities; but what about children whose families could not afford it?' She began helping other children with long-term illnesses and their families in small ways she could. 'Nilu and my son Nikhil encouraged me to continue my efforts and that led to the formation of Solace in 2007,' says Sheeba. From a homemaker, with two children, who knew 'nothing about the outside world', she grew to become a mother-figure for many. Niloufa passed away in 2013 and this strengthened Sheeba's resolve to help others going through the same kind of pain she did. 'I learnt that death is a certainty, but we can definitely help improve the quality of the children's lives for as long as they are alive,' Sheeba says. Talking about Niloufa still brings tears to her eyes, 'but it is this pain that drives me forward and strengthens me,' she adds. Solace, which started functioning as a small unit next to the leukemia ward of the Government Medical College in Thrissur, today has 5,600 children under its care. Registered as a charitable trust, Solace has three branches in Kerala and chapters in six states in the US. In her journey with Solace, Sheeba won awards for her outstanding work, including the Vanita Ratna (2011) instituted by the social justice department of the Government of Kerala and the Ramankutty Achan Award (2008). Between all her work commitments, Sheeba finds the time to nurture her literary interests too. She has authored books, which include poetry, literature and her own experiences working in palliative care. The exhibition, curated by the photographer Harikrishnan himself, is the result of four years of his interactions with Sheeba. While it showcases her personality as a compassionate social worker, it also captures her as a writer and dreamer. Some of the frames have a Sufi-esque quality to them, where Sheeba is portrayed as an ethereal being. The show is on till June 1 at Durbar Hall Art Centre.
