Wawa expands EV charging

Dive Brief: Wawa has partnered with electric vehicle charging network Ionna to add 'Rechargeries' at some of its locations, according to a Wednesday announcement from Ionna. The first of these sites will open at a Wawa in Daytona Beach, Florida, this week. Other locations in Florida are slated to open soon, including at stores in Bradenton, Pensacola and Orlando. Wawa joins Sheetz in partnering with Ionna to add Rechargeries to their forecourts. Dive Insight: While neither Ionna nor Wawa responded by press time to questions about the scope of this agreement, the announcement specified that it's Ionna's 'single largest EV Charging commitment to date.' Ionna announced late last year that it would open more than 50 Rechargeries with Sheetz in the Midwest and eastern U.S. The Wawa sites will include 400kW Genuine Charge Dispensers, meeting broader consumer desires for more powerful charging infrastructure. Wawa already has more than 175 locations with EV charging in its network, including EVgo and Tesla sites, according to the retailer's website. "With an ongoing commitment to providing our customers with speed and convenience, our new collaboration with IONNA does just that," said Rich Makin, chief fuel officer for Wawa. Casey's skips the Buc-ee's bloat

Bigger isn't always better — at least that's what Casey's is betting on for the time being. The big picture: Gas station companies nationwide are building bigger stores to encourage customers to stay and browse, especially as more electric vehicles hit the roads. State of play: During a Q&A with reporters this month, Casey's CEO Darren Rebelez noted that while EV customers stay at the gas station to charge for 30 minutes — most return to their cars after making their purchases inside. "If we see a trend where people want to spend more time in the actual store, then we'll have the ability to accommodate that," Rebelez said. "But from what we've seen so far, they prefer to actually spend the time in the car." By the numbers: Casey's is already larger than the average gas station because of its kitchen, Rebelez said. The average size of a store is 2,500 to 4,000 square feet, per CSP. Meanwhile, Sheetz on the east coast is expanding its stores, averaging 7,000 square feet and adding drive-thrus, the New York Times reports. QuikTrip, which is expanding in the Midwest, averages 7,000 square feet. Buc-ee's, the southern gas station, has locations as big as 75,000 square feet.

Ellwood City officer demoted, suspended without pay after confrontation with man at gas station, mayor says

The Ellwood City police officer involved in a confrontation at a gas station with a young man has been disciplined by the borough council. Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court said on Monday that officer Rob Magnifico has been demoted, suspended without pay and has to take classes "concerning de-escalating situations and also anger management" after he was seen on video confronting and shoving a 20-year-old man to the ground at the Sheetz on Fifth Street. "I just want to say that we took this matter very seriously," Court said after Monday's council meeting. "A lot of time and effort went into this, decisions made by myself and the governing body. We want to continue to move forward as a community." He added that the police union's bargaining unit can appeal the discipline. Police officer's viral confrontation caught on video Mayor Court said on June 9 that the officer was under investigation after the confrontation, which happened on June 6. Devin Hartmann told KDKA that he and his friends were getting food at the gas station when they were told to leave because they were recording. Hartmann said they left the Sheetz, but he returned because he forgot his cellphone. An argument with Sheetz employees ensued over the phone and Hartmann said he refused to leave without the device, leading to the police being called. Two officers, including Magnifico, responded. Hartmann said he told officers it was his phone and put the password in for proof, but he said they wouldn't give it to him. The video then shows the officer coming from behind the food counter and pushing Hartmann, causing him to hit the wall and the floor. "I was really scared," Hartmann previously told KDKA. "I was shocked, I thought something bad was going to happen." The confrontation was recorded by Hartmann's 16-year-old friend. "I thought it was the right thing to do, because I didn't know what was going to happen after that," 16-year-old Asher Rausch-Hicks previously told KDKA. "I was scared for my friend and myself." Magnifico has been on the force for 26 years. He is also the head football coach for Riverside High School.

According to detectives, Rumbaugh told the victim to keep this a secret until she was 18 years old. Police say there is surveillance video of Rumbaugh and the girl in a Sheetz, where you see Rumbaugh purchasing alcohol. A judge denied Rumbaugh bond May 28.
