Danny Rohl makes dramatic Sheff Wednesday U-turn to stay as boss of crisis club

Danny Rohl had been expected to depart Hillsborough amid the ongoing financial crisis at Sheffield Wednesday but will now remain as the club's manager Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has made a dramatic U-turn and will remain as Owls manager. The highly-rated German had been expected to depart Hillsborough amid the ongoing financial crisis engulfing the club. Rohl had informed Wednesday chiefs of his intention to leave towards the end of the season after players were paid late for March. The same issues has followed in both May and June, with the Owls under three separate embargoes. ‌ The 36-year-old has been linked with both Southampton and Leicester as well as a clutch of jobs in his native Germany. But a move is yet to come to fruition and he will now remain as Wednesday boss, despite missing the first two weeks of pre-season. ‌ It was announced on Monday evening that Henrik Pedersen, Rohl's assistant, had penned a new deal at Hillsborough and he was expected to take over as manager once Rohl's exit had been rubber-stamped. Rohl, who is under contract until the summer of 2027, was negotiating a severance package with the club in order for him to be able to leave with immediate effect. But he will now remain in what could be the clearest sign yet that takeover talks are progressing at the beleaguered South Yorkshire club. ‌ Fans are demanding under-fire owner Dejphon Chansiri sells up and the Thai tuna magnate knows he is in the end game. Interested parties are being directed to a group who specialise in the sale of football clubs, with NDAs being signed and proper process followed. Chansiri is already known to have rejected two bids from a Florida-based consortium made of business and professional sportspeople, including Sheffield-born Adam Shaw who has made his money Stateside. But there is also believed to be interest from numerous other parties, including former Crystal Palace part-owner John Textor and admiring glances from the Middle East. ‌ Rohl will return with his hands tied behind his back, at least until Wednesday settle their debts. They have been banned from paying either transfer or loan fees for the next three windows for non-payment of players. They are also under embargo for failing to pay the tax man and other clubs regarding historic transfer fees. All three must be settled before they can register any new players on more than £7,000-a-week. ‌ Highly-rated winger Djeidi Gassama is closing in on a move to Rangers for a cut-price fee rumoured to be in the region of £2.5million. Fellow flier Anthony Musaba and attacker Josh Windass are also being linked with moves away. Manchester City have already poached two of the Owls' most highly-rated academy stars including 15-year-old Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri, son of ex-Everton favourite Danny.

Newcastle hold talks with Man Utd target as Red Devils face transfer blow

Newcastle have held talks with free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is also on the radar of Manchester United this summer. The 28-year-old left Everton at the end of the season when his contract expired and is now looking for a new club. The 11-cap England international was once linked with big-money moves to top clubs, but recent seasons have been plagued by injuries and his stock has fallen. However, now he is available on a free transfer, big clubs are interested in taking a gamble on the forward. Manchester United have been linked with snapping him up as they look to revamp their options in attack and have missed out on targets including Viktor Gyokeres. TalkSPORT report that Newcastle have also held 'fresh talks' with Calvert-Lewin, potentially bringing him in as back-up to star striker Alexander Isak. The result of those talks is not clear, but there is interest from the Magpies, with manager Eddie Howe said to be a long-term admirer of the Sheffield-born striker. Newly-promoted Leeds United have also been credited with an interest in the Yorkshireman, but his wage demands are reportedly out of their reach. Newcastle are in need of a new striker after Callum Wilson confirmed he has left the club at the end of his contract on Monday. The 33-year-old has been at St James' Park since 2020, scoring 49 goals in 130 appearances for the Magpies. He too has suffered with injuries, though, and since the arrival of Isak has fallen down the pecking order. Last season saw him score just one goal in 22 appearances in all competitions, with the vast majority of those outings coming off the bench. Wilson posted an emotional message on social media, which read: 'To all you Magpies.. 'It's time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon. Remarkably, Calvert-Lewin and Wilson have made the same number of Premier League appearances. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.
