Rise of patchwork facelift techniques that leave patients with eye-watering stitches - as surgeons say painful-looking method heals FASTER
It's the latest beauty trend that has the internet both horrified and fascinated. Patchwork-style facelifts, in which people are sewn up in intricate patterns, leave patients looking like something out of a horror film - but according to experts, such methods are extremely effective and significantly reduce recovery time. One such procedure, the Firat facelift, has come to prominence since 90 Day Fiancé star Shekinah Garner, 43, showed off the results of her own surgery, sharing a video on Instagram in which she revealed she'd undergone a lower blepharoplasty as well as the lift - reportedly her third facelift in total, and what is believed to be her first Firat lift. The clip left viewers reeling as it showed the enormous facial stitches left over from her surgery in all their gory detail. She shared footage of her face in bandages, which were gradually removed to reveal large stitches, swelling and bruising on her face. While it is to be expected that a major operation like a facelift will leave patients with some initial stitches and swelling, those used in this style of procedure - which also includes the hemostatic net facelift - are enough to make even the most hardened cosmetic surgery fan wince. However, experts claim the technique - which started to emerge around a decade ago - is revolutionising recovery and reducing the risk of post-op bleeding. The unsettling post-surgery look is created by a crisscross of fine threads, forming a tight 'net' over the patient's face, which will usually be swollen and bruised from surgery. The effect is undeniably graphic, prompting some to make comparisons to horror film characters such as Hellraiser. But according to plastic surgeon Ms Monica Fawzy, who performs hemostatic net facelifts at The Private Clinic, Harley Street, London, there's a very good reason for using this method. The hemostatic net works by applying consistent pressure across the face which helps minimise internal bleeding, reduce bruising, and speed up healing. In fact Ms Fawzy, who has over 20 years of experience in facial surgery, claims this method 'decreases complication risks' and also offers patients one of the most effective facelift recovery methods to date. She said: 'This [method] involves quilting sutures in the area where the skin has been lifted (rather than areas where the lift occurs in the deeper plane). 'It ensures that the skin is firmly re-opposed to the underlying structures. 'It was initially applied in the facelift setting by a Brazilian surgeon called Andre Auersvald to minimise a potential complication called a haematoma (collection of blood under the skin). 'It has been consequently taken up by a large proportion of facelift surgeons and found to have other advantages such as minimising a potential collection of tissue fluid under the skin (seroma), as well as helping to re-drape the skin in certain cases.' The plastic surgeon revealed that patients only look this way for 'a couple of days' and can be covered up if it makes some feel queasy. She added: 'It will generally be removed in a couple of days anyway so it is short- lived. 'I tend to cover the areas with surgical tape to prevent any potential patient anxiety,' she explained, adding that she always explains the process to patients ahead of performing the procedure. 'The appearance of the sutures depends on the extent of the area involved and the surgeon's approach. 'For example, I tend to apply it in a limited fashion - as I believe it gives the best of both worlds (decreased complication risk, whilst avoiding over extensive suturing as you may sometimes see online).' When it comes to plastic surgery, techniques are always being tweaked and updated in an effort to improve results and minimise risks. And whatever method used, the facelift, described by the Mayo Clinic, as a 'cosmetic surgical procedure to create a younger look in the face', is a significant operation. The Mayo Clinic's website states: 'The procedure can reduce sagging skin. It can also help smooth folds of skin on the cheeks and jawline. A facelift is also called a rhytidectomy. Following her appearing on the reality show, Shekinah showed off a very different look while attending the Us Weekly and Pluto TV's 2024 Reality TV Stars Of The Year awards in October 2024 - before getting her Firat facelift, but after reportedly having two previous lifts and other procedures including fillers 'During a facelift, a flap of skin on each side of the face is pulled back. Tissues below the skin are altered, and excess skin is removed. This gives the face a more youthful shape.' Speaking in a YouTube video, double board certified plastic surgeon Dr Gary Linkov explained: 'The term facelift is kind of a misnomer in that it's not that you're lifting the entire face. 'It's generally addressing the lower face, the neck area and sometimes the mid face, but it does not refer to lifting the brows, which is the upper face, and so that is a separate procedure.' He added that there are a number of different types of facelifts, from the so-called 'mini facelift' to the 'deep plane lift'. And so the Hemostatic Net lift, and similar procedures which involve wrapping the face in a web-like pattern of stitches, are simply new additions to the list of existing styles of face lifts. 90 Day Fiancé star Shekinah Garner's surgery was carried out by surgeon Dr Mirza Firat, who calls his technique the Firat Facelift, and says he developed the specific method he uses. Speaking about the procedure in a video on Instagram, Dr Firat, who is based in Turkey, said: 'The Firat Facelift is a surgery for facial beautification and rejuvenation. Why I coined it with my name is because I developed the technique on my own.' He went onto say that the goal of the surgery is to 'perform the surgery endoscopically through hidden incisions'. The surgeon continued: 'The difference from the traditional deep plane facelift is that I'm performing the procedure through hidden incisions like [in the] temporal scalp, or behind the ear, and performing a deep dissection of the forehead and temple, the mid face, and in more severe patients, in the lateral cheek to lift everything vertically. 'This is the way we treat aging signs like nasolabial folds and jowls more effectively.' However, as with any procedure, there are differing opinions, and US-based surgeon Michael Somenek spoke about why he is not convinced about the method on a post on Instagram. He wrote: 'Hemostatic nets. They are a real thing but here's the deal! 'They are used by surgeons throughout the world to minimize the risk of prolonged swelling and postoperative hematoma formation after various surgeries, such as facelift and brow lift. 'The idea is that it compresses the space between the tissues, and minimizes the risk of the above complications. However, certain studies claim that their values are statistically significant at reducing the overall incident of hematoma. 'The reduction is about a two to three per cent reduction, which out of 100 people that is only about two or three people when you put it into perspective. 'For those reasons, I really can't justify the need for this in my practice when performing deep plane facelift, nor am I convinced that my patients would really be up or open for this.'

90 Day Fiancé Revealed Sarper's Wild Clause For A Prenup With Shekinah, And My Jaw Dropped
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Warning! The following contains spoilers for the 90 Day Fiancé episode "Proof of Love." Stream it with a Max subscription and read at your own risk! Shekinah Garner and Sarper Güven are arguably 90 Day Fiancé's most volatile couple right now. Their storylines always seem to include some truly jaw-dropping drama. The notion of something toping Sarper's confession of sleeping with 2,500 women may seem a bit far-fetched. However, I now believe his shocking request for what he wanted in his and Shekinah's prenuptial agreement may top it. The aforementioned couple have been a part of the franchise for quite some time but, now, Sarper is finally in the United States, and they're ready to get married. That said, Sarper didn't seem prepared when Shekinah suggested, in front of her friends, that they get a prenup. And Sarper's response seemed to have every one of Shekinah's pals thinking this upcoming marriage would be a mistake. Shekinah's friends were partly to blame for this awkward topic being broached on a night out. Her business manager insisted they discuss a prenup once they announced they were having a "bedding," which is a wedding in bed. Sarper took grave offense to the question being asked, as he said prenups in Turkey are considered a big sign of disrespect towards the sanctity of marriage. Max: Plans start from $9.99 a monthPay $9.99 a month for its With Ads plan, and with three tiers available, there are a lot of ways to customize your experience. You can also prepay for a year and save up to 20%.View Deal After taking some time to reflect, the 90 Day Fiancé star countered with his own proposal. Sarper said he would sign the prenup, assuming a clause was added to account for Shekinah's weight. As part of that, there were some specific details stipulated. With that theoretical clause in mind, at the start of each month, Sarper would be allowed to weigh his spouse. And, for every pound she's off of her target weight of 128 pounds, he would be able to fine her $1000. Those in attendance couldn't believe what they just heard, or that Shekinah seemed completely unfazed by it. Believe me when I say I was also totally shocked. I'm not sure what to make of Shekinah's response to Sarper's proposal. Maybe, given the unique of an upbringing Shekinah had, she doesn't get rattled by much and was ultimately unfazed by Sarper's wild request, despite her friend's reactions. As she pointed out, 90 Day Fiancé recalled their first in-person meeting, in which he made her step on a scale to get her weight. For better or worse, Shekinah's known from the start that she entered a relationship with a man who has specific standards for his partner's and his own body, and he can be strict. More On 90 Day Fiancé I've Been Skeptical Of 90 Day: Hunt For Love As A 90 Day Fiancé Fan, But Now I'm 1000% In For A Specific Reason And, while married 90 Day couples have split over much less, Shekinah doesn't see Sarper's request as a make-or-break moment of their future union. In fact, she noted that he mainly made that request because he was hurt by the suggestion that they sign a prenuptial agreement and was lashing out in response in an attempt to anger or embarrass her. Good for her for keeping her cool about it, I suppose, because I can't imagine many others would've had the same reaction. I'm surprised but, at the same time, both Shekinah and Sarper have shown over the years that they have pretty thick skin. They loved it when Jovi and Yara Dufren dressed up as them for Halloween and don't seem easily phased by criticisms other couples have of their relationship when they get a chance to comment on it at tell-all specials. Still, time will tell whether these two will indeed make it to the altar.

90 Day Fiancé: Is Shekinah and Sarper's Marriage Already in Trouble?
It hasn't been that long since their 'bedding wedding' but it looks like Sarper Güven and Shekinah Garner of may already be running into marital issues. But that's not really surprising considering the numerous troubles they had even before tying the knot in bed. In fact, many fans wondered if they would actually cross the finish line. They had so many relationship ups and downs. But they pushed through them all and made it to 'I do.' And now it seems like they are wondering if perhaps they should have given it a little more thought. Unfortunately, the clock was ticking on the K1 visa. But that's all hindsight now. In an emotional clip from the upcoming 90 Day Fiancé Tell-All, the couple get candid about what life has been like after their unique bedding ceremony. '(The wedding) was perfect, and I loved how intimate it was,' Shekinah shared. 'There was no one else there, and it was really just special.' Then she started to cry as she added. 'But now, I feel I'm going to get emotional. Just everything changed after we got married. And that was my biggest fear and it just, like, came true.' Sarper agreed with her saying that change was his biggest fear as well. And even though they made it and stayed together, the future looks pretty daunting for the couple. Shekinah explained that it has been hard with Sarper's move-in and adjusting to life in the United States. 'Sarper changed, our dynamic changed, because now we're in the U.S. and he moved into my place, which I know is hard because it does feel like it's my place, you know. Sarper went through a really bad depression and it brought up a lot of anger from him at me.' For his part, Sarper explained that his depression stems from a lack of control. 'I am always the control freak, so I have to control things, and when I don't control things I feel depressed. If you ask me, I don't like the marriage.' Looks like trouble in paradise. And serious trouble at that. The couple have always said that after going through what they have, they can make it through anything and that loving each holds the relationship together. I guess now they'll find out if love is enough. 90 Day Fiancé Tell-All Part 1 airs Sunday, 8:00 pm ET on TLC. Season 11 is currently available to stream on Discovery +. After the show's 90th wedding, real couples from ‘90 Day Fiancé' explain why love for the franchise endures
When '90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way' cast members Shekinah Garner and Sarper Güven got married in bed, the pair seemed to thrill and enrage their audience in equal measure. Some viewers offered up congratulations to the newlyweds in comments on social media, while others viewed the nuptials as a stunt meant to garner the pair more airtime. Welcome to the world of the '90 Day' franchise, shows people love to watch and live to hate-watch. Garner and Güven's wedding was the 90th of the franchise, which has multiple shows and millions of fans. The original show, '90 Day Fiancé,' premiered on TLC in January 2014, featuring stories about Americans who fall in love with people from other countries. The '90 day' refers to the amount of time an individual with a K-1 fiancé(e) visa has to marry their US sponsor and start the process to become an American citizen. The franchise has grown to have multiple spinoff series, including '90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days,' '90 Day: The Single Life,' '90 Day Fiancé: Love in Paradise' and 'The Last Resort.' (Like CNN, TLC is part of Warner Bros. Discovery.) Loren and Alexei Brovarnik joined the show in 2015 after meeting and falling in love in Israel, where she had traveled as part of a birthright trip in 2013. Viewers have followed their lives over the past ten years as they settled in Florida and welcomed three children. It hasn't always been easy, something Loren learned after she underwent a surgical 'mommy makeover,' which caused some tension with her husband and divided viewers. 'You're always being judged,' Loren Brovernik told CNN. 'You're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't and you can't do it right no matter what.' Public scrutiny hasn't dissuaded the couple from participating in several spinoffs, including '90 Day Fiancé: Pillow Talk' and 'Loren & Alexei: After the 90 Days.' They will next be seen in a new season of '90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?' 'It's a brilliant concept and every story is different,' Brovernik said of the entire franchise. Alon Orstein, senior vice president for production and development for TLC, credits the appeal of '90 Day' shows to their mix of romance and drama. 'It's boy meets girl, boy meets boy, girl meets girl,' he said. 'People love to see the romantic journeys. People love the rollercoaster relationships, and '90 Day Fiancé' gives it this twist of this international component.' He insists that the show is not scripted, as some on social media have suggested. Orstein said they aim to cast individuals who are 'open, being honest, giving full access, being ready to wear your heart on your sleeve, being ready to dig deep and to be ready, willing and able to sort of have your most intimate experiences be out there.' 'That's not so easy. Not everyone can do that, and it's something that we have to be mindful of in the casting process. And sometimes even during productions people become more guarded,' Orstein said. 'It's hard to do these stories and to make a show like this if people aren't ready to sort of open up and give full access. That's really what makes the best cast members, people who are just ready to go there.' Kenny Niedermeier and Armando Rubio became famous for their appearance on '90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way,' when Niedermeier moved to Mexico, married Rubio and become co-parent to Rubio's daughter, Hannah, 12. The couple even had a spin-off in 2022, titled 'Kenny & Armando: Love Is Love.' The two men said they didn't quite know what to expect when they joined the franchise, but it's been a great experience. 'I think our favorite part is that we were able to tell our story, and I think it helped a lot of people that are in our situation that might feel kind of left out or they feel like a lot of people don't support them,' Niedermeier said. He added that occasional negativity they received for sharing their lives was something that made them closer. 'We felt so much support along the way,' Niedermeier said. 'We weren't sure what we to expect when we signed on to do '90 Day Fiancé,' but we were pleasantly surprised and I think it really made a difference in our lives.' The new season of '90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?' premieres Sunday, July 6 at 8pm ET/PT on TLC.

90 Day Fiancé's Sarper and Shekinah Swap Wedding for ‘Bedding' Ceremony
90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way stars Sarper Güven and Shekinah Garner have finally wed! And they decided to switch up the traditional wedding ceremony to get married in bed. They had a bedding ceremony! The couple met on a dating site during Season 5 of the show while vacationing in Turkey. Originally Shekinah was supposed to move to Turkey. However, this didn't happen and by the beginning of Season 6, it was revealed that she had to return to the U.S. for work. Sarper followed her on a K1 visa. But that wasn't the end of the drama. As a returning couple on 90 Day Fiancé Season 11, fans watched as they continued to argue. Despite having proposed in Season 6 of The Other Way, the couple still had a lot of issues to resolve before saying 'I Do.' Now we know they made it through. At least to the wedding, or rather bedding portion of the program. The couple decided on having a wedding in bed and honestly, it's really so on brand. The reality duo caught up with TMZ and shared some of the details of their non-traditional bedding ceremony. 'We love being in bed, honestly,' Shekinah 'We spend a lot of time in bed. We don't even have a dining room table, we eat all our meals in bed, we watch a lot of shows.' She paused and then added, 'We were really afraid of marriage actually so it made it a little less scary.' Sarper added that nothing about their relationship was normal so it was expected that their wedding wouldn't be normal or traditional either. The couple also shared that their family was shocked but not surprised when they heard. 'They were shocked,' Shekinah revealed. 'But they also weren't that surprised because they know us. They know that we're going to do something unconventional.' When asked if they would recommend a 'bedding wedding' to other couples, Shekinah was quick to answer, 'No! It's our thing!' This made Sarper laugh as he joked, 'We are selfish son of a b*tches.' The pair's ceremony marks the 90th wedding in the 90 Day Fiancé history. 90 Day Fiancé Season 11 is currently available to stream on Discovery +.
