NASCAR resumes Atlanta Xfinity race after 80 minute lightning delay

NASCAR had to wait over an hour due to lightning in the area before they were able tor resume Friday night's Xfinity Series race at EchoPark Speedway (Atlanta). The track remained dry, but the nearby lightning made it unsafe for the fans and competitors to continue with the event. However, after red-flagging the race at 9:02pm EST, cars rolled back out on track at 10:25pm EST to continue the race. Advertisement Here's a brief rundown of the event before the lengthy stoppage: Sheldon Creed led the NASCAR Xfinity Series field to the green flag at Atlanta in a race that started later than scheduled due to lightning in the area. But once the race got underway, it didn't take long for the first incident of the night. Within the first five laps, the caution flag was out as Blaine Perkins spun around following contact from Christian Eckes. Parker Retzlaff, William Sawalich, and Josh Williams were all collected as well and sustained noticeable damage. However, the No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet abruptly fell through the pack. He reported a fuel pressure issue and was eventually forced onto pit road under green-flag conditions. Advertisement While Hill fell multiple laps down, NASCAR threw the caution on Lap 34 of the 45-lap opening stage. The reason was inclement weather and due to a lightning strike within eight miles of the track, they were forced to halt the race. The field rolled down pit road and the race was red-flagged with Creed still in command. Connor Zilisch, who earned his first oval win one week ago at Pocono, was in second. Sam Mayer, Jesse Love, and Taylor Gray rounded out the top five. Ryan Sieg, Aric Almirola, Nick Sanchez, Justin Allgaier, and Leland Honeyman filled out the remainder of the top ten. While the field split on strategy once the race went back to yellow-flag conditions, some chose to stay out for a five-lap sprint to the end of the stage. Unfortunately, a massive wreck immediately ensued, taking out several cars. Redemption for Justin Allgaier in dominant NASCAR Xfinity win at Nashville

Justin Allgaier now has 28 career NASCAR Xfinity Series wins, earning his third victory of the season on Saturday night. The veteran driver absolutely dominated the Nashville event, winning both stages and collecting the checkered flag ahead of JR Motorsports teammate Connor Zilisch. Allgaier led 101 of 188 laps, putting a difficult loss at Charlotte behind him. He was leading late in that race just one week ago, but went against his crew chief and chose to stay out on older tires in a decision that proved costly. Advertisement The Haas Factory Team duo of Sam Mayer and Sheldon Creed finished third and fourth, respectively. Newly crowned Coke 600 winner Ross Chastain made a late-race pass on Aric Almirola to take the final spot inside the top five. Almirola, Austin Hill, Jesse Love, Daniel Dye, and Carson Kvapil filled out the remainder of the top ten. The final stage began with a restart stack-up that saw several cars go spinning. Brandon Jones, Christian Eckes, Ryan Ellis, Josh Williams, Kyle Sieg, and Anthony Alfredo with both Eckes and Elliss suffering race-ending damage. Things got back underway following a lengthy cleanup with Creed in control, but not for long as Zilisch ran him down. After packing some air on the left rear of the No. 00 Ford, he powered into the race lead. Advertisement Zilisch's time out front was short-lived as a caution for polesitter William Sawalich spinning down the backstretch brought the field back together. On pit road, Jones won the race off as he did not take tires, having already used his final set following the previously mentioned restart incident. Allgaier made a bold three-wide move for the lead, snatching the lead away in what would be the winning pass. Zilisch stayed close for most of the final run, but he never managed to mount a real challenge. NASCAR Xfinity Race at Bristol Under Red Flag After Vicious High Impact Crash in Stage One

Near the end of the opening stage of the Sciaps 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway, Sheldon Creed spun out on the exit of turn four and stopped perpendicular to the racing lines between middle and high lines. The No. 14 of Greg Van Alst was able to narrowly avoid him, but in doing so was the visual block for the No. 44 of Brennan Poole, who didn't have the time to react at the fast half-mile track, turning slightly but hitting the driver's side of the No. 00 about a quarter from head-on. Creed was running around 16th when the collision occurred, as he was trying to mirror the moves of the leader, Kyle Larson, who had already started to lap the field up to the 14th spot. When he missed the exit of turn four and spun. The collision ripped the side walls off of Creed's car and dislodged one of his front wheels. "I feel fine, it knocked the air out of me there for a second," Creed told The CW Sports Kim Coon. "The No. 27 was the lucky dog there at the moment, and he was doing a good job of holding on to that. I was just trying to play with things and was fairly free at the moment, just trying to search. I'd see [Larson] diamond when he was lapping us, and I feel like it worked fairly well, so I went and tried to start working that into my line. I was just trying to work around the No. 27." Creed didn't know he would get hit by Poole until it happened. Van Alst narrowly missed him moments before, leading him to briefly think that even though he was mirrored in the middle of the track, he may be safe. "When the first guy missed me, I was like 'oh I might not get hit at all' but then, yeah, got hit," Creed said. "It just happens so quickly here. For Brenden's sake, it happens so quickly and I was sitting right there in the middle of the track."
