Deputy CEO of Shani Shingnapur temple trust found dead

Nashik: Nitin Shete, the 43-year-old deputy CEO of the Shani Shingnapur temple trust, was on Monday found dead in the storeroom of his residence at Ghodegaon, in Nevasa taluka of Ahilyanagar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Assistant inspector Ashish Shelke, of the Shani Shingnapur police station, said that they registered a case of accidental death. No note was found with the deceased. Shete's body was found hanging in the storeroom, approximately 60 feet from his main house, by a family member, said Shelke. "Police were informed about the incident around 10am. His body was then taken to a local hospital for postmortem," added Shelke. Shete was earlier on the board of trustees of the Shani Shingnapur temple trust. The temple trust is currently under scrutiny due to allegations of corruption in its day-to-day functioning. After corruption issues were raised in the state assembly, per chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's instructions, a case was registered with the Shani Shingnapur police station against unidentified people under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Information Technology (IT) Act for creating fake mobile applications and websites in the name of Shanaishwar Devasthan, thereby cheating devotees by soliciting money under the pretext of 'darshan', 'pujas', and other services. When asked if Shete was accused in the case, the Ahilyanagar police said so far, nobody has been named in the cheating case, which is under investigation.

Role limited to just a ‘customer': Student gets bail in sex racket

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail to a 23-year-old student who was arrested in September 2024 for allegedly engaging in sex with a teenage trafficked victim. The court observed that his role was limited to that of a 'customer' and that there was no evidence to show he forced the victim into sex work or knew her real age. (Shutterstock) The trafficking came to light on September 20, 2024, when police constable Avisha Dhonsekar, attached to the anti-human trafficking cell of the Navi Mumbai police, received a tip-off about the alleged trafficking in Panvel, where girls aged between 16 and 17 were being forced into sex work allegedly by one Vejad Ali Khan alias Raju Mondal. Consequently, they raided the lodge and rescued seven women, including a Bangladeshi minor. The accused – Shayna Jaman, Bibi Shahidue, Shubo Sardar, and Mihir Bhise– had brought the seven victims from Kolkata to Navi Mumbai. They forced them into sex work and booked a room at the Panchratna Lodge in Panvel. Tejas Sachin Shelke, a third-year B Sc student, paid the accused to engage in sex with one of the victims. The next day, all five of them, along with Raju Mondal, were booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 (PITA Act) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act). Sheke was arrested on September 29 and on December 10, 2024, he applied for his first bail for the POCSO offence against him. In his bail application before the additional sessions judge, he said he was not aware of the girl's age as her ID said she was 22. Aggrieved by its rejection on January 16, 2025, Shelke approached the Bombay High Court in February this year for enlargement on bail. Additional Public Prosecutor Madhavi H Mhatre submitted that Shelke had forced the Bangladeshi minor into the flesh trade and had a physical relationship with her for a price. She added that he knew that the minor victim's identity card was forged to show that she was 22 years of age. On the other hand, advocate Ganesh Gupta, representing Shelke, submitted that even if the allegations in the crime are considered, Shelke's status would be that of a customer. As the victim's age on the ID card showed she was 22, the allegations against Shelke would not be tenable. Noting that Shelke was arraigned in the crime in the capacity of being a customer, the single-judge bench of justice Ashwin Bhobe said Shelke cannot be expected to know the age of a woman. Moreover, finding no solid evidence against Shelke for having forced the victim into the flesh trade, the bench granted him bail on a personal bond of ₹25 thousand with stringent conditions. 'Applicant is a student aged 23 years. His involvement in the present crime, being that of a customer, and considering the facts and circumstances of the case, he would be entitled to bail as his incarceration during the pendency of trial is not warranted,' it concluded.

Plot to kill MLA Sunil Shelke foiled in Pimpri-Chinchwad, SIT to be formed

The Pimpri-Chinchwad police have uncovered a conspiracy to murder Sunil Shelke, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA from Maval constituency. During a discussion in the state assembly on Friday, Shelke raised serious concerns through a calling attention motion, prompting the state government to take immediate action. The conspiracy came to light on July 26, 2023, when the anti-dacoity cell of the Pimpri-Chinchwad police carried out a major operation in Talegaon Dabhade based on a tipoff. (HT) Responding to the motion the same day, minister of state for home affairs Yogesh Kadam assured the House that a special investigation team (SIT) will be constituted to conduct an in-depth probe into the matter. Initially, two persons were arrested whereas a further probe led to the arrest of seven persons in total. All accused have a criminal history involving murder, attempt to murder, extortion, arson, and possession of illegal arms. The police recovered nine pistols, 42 live cartridges, machetes, and other deadly weapons from them. During interrogation, the accused revealed that the seized weapons were meant to be used in the planned murder of Shelke. The accused hail from Madhya Pradesh, Jalna, Vadgaon and Kalewadi and reportedly have no personal enmity with Shelke, raising suspicions of a powerful mastermind operating behind the scenes. Shelke questioned in the assembly, pointing to a larger, more sinister conspiracy. Kadam informed the House that the accused had been in prison for a year-and-a-half and were later externed from Pune district for two years. However, after Shelke once again highlighted the serious nature of the conspiracy, Kadam assured that an SIT would be constituted to investigate the matter in detail. Kadam also asked Shelke to share whatever information the latter might have with the police so as to help take necessary action.

Raut accuses NCP MLA of illegal mining in letter to CM

Pune: Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut wrote a letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, alleging that NCP MLA Sunil Shelke and his family members carried out illegal mining at Maval tehsil's Ambale village and cheated the govt out of crores of rupees by not paying the royalty. Raut also alleged that Shelke, in connivance with some MIDC officials, made the govt acquire a piece of land unsuitable for industrial purposes because the mining activity was being carried out. "The valuation of Shelke's plot was Rs 73 lakh per acre. After acquiring that plot, the proposal of giving an alternative piece of land valued at Rs2.5 crore per acre as compensation is pending with the MIDC." Refuting the allegations, Shelke dared Raut to come out with evidence against him. Anurag Bende

Uddhav Sena accuses NCP MLA Sunil Shelke of mining royalty evasion worth thousands of crores of rupees

The Shiv Sena (UBT) Wednesday alleged that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Sunil Shelke has caused a loss worth thousands of crores of rupees to the state exchequer by not paying the royalty for quarrying activities in his constituency, Maval. In a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut urged him to stop the blatant 'loot' by the MLA belonging to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's NCP. 'Sunil Shelke, without taking any permission from the government, has indulged in digging and collecting minerals from quarries. However, he has failed to pay any royalty to the government,' Raut alleged, adding that Shelke has cheated the government. As per the Maharashtra Minor Mineral Extraction (Development and Regulation) Rules, 2013, every lessee is required to pay royalty on minerals such as sand, gravel, and murrum mined from the leased area at rates specified by the government from time to time. Raut said Shelke and his brother had made an application in 2023 to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to receive land compensation for the land acquired by the government. 'Accordingly, they were given an alternative land in return,' he said. 'Since Shelke has deprived the government of royalty worth thousands of crores (of rupees), how is the government going to compensate for it? The chief minister should issue a directive in this regard,' Raut said. 'The government has several times acquired fertile and irrigated land from farmers. But has never compensated them with a piece of land in return. Why were the MLA and his family then given the land as compensation?' asked Raut. Shelke, who is attending the Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, has not responded to Raut's allegations. Shelke won from Maval for the first time in the 2019 polls as part of the undivided NCP, defeating two-time BJP MLA Bala Bhegade. He retained the seat in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly polls, beating the nearest rival, Bapu Jaywantrao Bhegade, who contested as an Independent. In 10 years, nearly 200 two-wheeler riders had died in accidents due to the pathetic state of the road. The local cantonment board could not get the road redone as it lacked funds. The then PMC commissioner Pravin Pardeshi took the initiative, went out of his way and made the Khadki road by spending Rs 23 crore from JNNURM Funds. In the next 10 years after the road was made by the PMC, less than 10 citizens had died, effectively saving more than 100 lives.
