Tragedy in Connecticut coastal town as couple wash up dead after sailing away from ritzy oyster dinner
A man and a women have been found dead in a Connecticut coastal town after sailing their boat into the darkness from a ritzy oyster restaurant.
The pair, who have not yet been named publicly, were reported missing when they didn't arrive back in Stratford, Connecticut, on Wednesday night.
They had dined at Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill in New Haven, docking nearby.
Security cameras filmed them on board the 27ft Sea Hunt vessel, which took off from the marina about 9.30pm.
A phone belonging to one of the missing people pinged a cell tower near the New Haven Harbor west break wall at 9.40pm, the Coast Guard said, but that is the last time either of them was detected alive.
The pair were on a boating trip from Norwalk to Stratford. When they failed to return by Thursday morning a concerned person called the Coast Guard.
Coast Guard officials said they dined at Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill in New Haven after making a reservation, then went to the marina next door
The boat was found about 5.20pm the next day, capsized and submerged near the the west break wall in New Haven Harbor, which it is believed to have crashed into.
The missing man and woman were found unresponsive in the same area and recovered by a Connecticut State Police dive team.
Neither were wearing life jackets.
The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner pronounced them dead soon afterwards.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's Environmental Conservation Police is investigating.
