Mapua unveils electric vehicle prototype for Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2026

Engineering students at Mapua University are taking on a new challenge as they prepare for next year's Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. For the first time since the eco-marathon was introduced in Asia in 2010, Mapua's Cardinal One will compete with a battery-electric vehicle after fielding prototypes that run on internal combustion engines. Still under development, the electric vehicle prototype, called Aguila Neo Electric, was presented to the alumni, partners, sponsors, and media at Mapua's Intramuros campus on Saturday night, July 19. In the upcoming months, the EV prototype will go through several track tests and enhancements before being shipped to Qatar in time for the competition in 2026. ''After 15 years of competing in internal combustion, Cardinal One has transitioned to full electric propulsion—reflecting our commitment to innovation and sustainability. Aguila Neo Electric represents not only a technological leap but also the dedication and resilience of Filipino student engineers redefining the future of clean mobility,'' Cardinal One said. The event also recognized the legacy of previous Cardinal One teams that competed on the global stage. Shell Eco-marathon serves as a platform for students to showcase their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills to construct energy-efficient vehicles and then compete on the track. Mapua won the technical innovation award twice, in 2013 and 2024, in the internal combustion category. According to Shell, the award ''recognizes the team's ability to integrate advanced technologies into their vehicle design, illustrating their high level of technical proficiency and creative ingenuity.'' Mapua's previous teams were also recognized for their safety practices. —GMA Integrated News

Egyptian Teams Gear Up for Shell Eco-marathon

Shell Egypt is proud to announce the participation of 5 Egyptian university teams in the highly anticipated Shell Eco-marathon (SEM) Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2025 regional competition, set to take place for the first time in the Middle East at the Lusail International Circuit in Doha, Qatar, from February 8-12, 2025. This year's competition marks a special milestone as SEM celebrates its 40th anniversary. The global academic programme is dedicated to fostering innovation in energy optimization by challenging student teams to design, build, and test ultra-energy-efficient vehicles, empowering the next generation of energy leaders. Since 2013, Egyptian universities participate in SEM, with hundreds of students benefitting from the programme's extensive learning journey. Egyptian teams have previously earned accolades such as the Innovation Award, Safety Award, and Communication Award, demonstrating exceptional creativity and engineering prowess. For the first time, the Asia-Pacific and Middle East competition will be hosted in the Middle East, bringing together brilliant engineering minds to Qatar's Lusail International Circuit. The event promises an intense and inspiring week of innovation as teams strive to push the boundaries of energy efficiency. Dalia Elgabry, Vice President and Country Chair for Shell Egypt, stated: 'At Shell, we are committed to empowering young innovators and driving sustainable solutions for a cleaner energy future. The Shell Eco-marathon embodies this mission by encouraging students to collaborate, persevere, and innovate.' Reflecting on their experiences, past participants Menna & Zeyad from Cairo University and Helwan University emphasized the life-changing impact of SEM. They said 'This competition pushes us to innovate beyond limits and prepares us for real-world challenges in energy and sustainability,' Shell Egypt's ongoing support for SEM aligns with its broader social investment initiatives aimed at preparing future leaders to address global energy challenges responsibly: in 2024, Shell Egypt dedicated 5 NXplorers workshops to support the capacity building of the SEM teams. As one of the world's leading student engineering competitions, Shell Eco-marathon has inspired innovation and collaboration for 40 years. The programme empowers students to develop not only technical expertise but also essential skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication, all vital for driving impactful change in the energy sector. With anticipation building for the upcoming competition in Qatar, Shell Egypt is confident that the participating Egyptian teams will once again demonstrate their ingenuity and commitment to shaping a sustainable future. تم نسخ الرابط
