S.W.A.T. Season 9: Renewal status, release date speculation and everything we know so far

By Aman Shukla Published on July 18, 2025, 20:30 IST Last updated July 18, 2025, 20:04 IST If you're a fan of S.W.A.T., the CBS cop drama starring Shemar Moore as the tough-but-fair Sergeant Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson, you're probably wondering what's next after the wild ride of Season 8. The show's been a rollercoaster, dodging cancellations before, but the latest news has fans on edge. So, is S.W.A.T. coming back for Season 9? Here's everything we know so far. Renewal Status: Is S.W.A.T. Season 9 Happening? Right now, S.W.A.T. is not renewed for a ninth season. CBS pulled the plug in March 2025, marking the show's third cancellation since it started in 2017. Yep, third. This show's been through more breakups and makeups than a soap opera couple. Back in 2023, after Season 6, CBS canceled it, only for fans and Shemar Moore to rally hard enough to bring it back for Season 7. Then, in April 2024, CBS gave it a Season 8 greenlight, calling it the 'final season.' But when the axe fell again this year, it stung. There's still a sliver of hope, though. Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind S.W.A.T. , is actively shopping the show to other networks and streaming platforms. Shemar Moore took to Instagram in March, practically begging Netflix or someone else to pick it up, saying, 'We've got stories left to tell, and fans who deserve more.' A petition to save the show has racked up about 80,000 signatures, showing the fanbase isn't giving up. But as of now, no one's stepped up to save the day. No Netflix, no Paramount+, no anybody. Still, the fact that Sony's trying keeps the door cracked open. When Could S.W.A.T. Season 9 Come Out? Since there's no renewal, there's no official release date for Season 9. But let's play the guessing game. If, say, Netflix or another platform swoops in by late 2025, production would need time to ramp up. S.W.A.T. usually premiered in the fall—October or November—for most of its run, with Season 8 hitting screens on October 18, 2024. Filming a season typically takes 6-8 months, plus a few months for pre- and post-production. So, if a miracle happens and Season 9 gets greenlit soon, we're looking at a release in fall 2026, maybe September or October. If a streamer like Netflix picks it up, they might go for a shorter season (10-13 episodes instead of 22), which could speed things up to, say, summer 2026. But this is all just me crunching numbers based on how TV works—no promises, since nothing's confirmed. S.W.A.T. Season 9 Expected Cast If S.W.A.T. gets a ninth season, we'd expect the Season 8 crew to return, assuming they're available. That includes: Shemar Moore as Hondo Harrelson, the heart and soul of the show. as Hondo Harrelson, the heart and soul of the show. Jay Harrington as Deacon Kay, the veteran with a big heart. as Deacon Kay, the veteran with a big heart. David Lim as Victor Tan, the team's sharpshooter. as Victor Tan, the team's sharpshooter. Anna Enger Ritch as Zoe Powell, the tough-as-nails officer. as Zoe Powell, the tough-as-nails officer. Niko Pepaj as Miguel 'Miko' Alfaro, the newer recruit. as Miguel 'Miko' Alfaro, the newer recruit. Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Hicks, the boss. as Commander Hicks, the boss. Annie Ilonzeh as Devin Gamble, the team's latest addition. What Would Season 9 Be About? The Season 8 finale, 'Return to Base,' aired on May 16, 2025, and left us hanging. Without spoiling too much, the two-parter had Hondo, Victor Tan, and Zoe Powell dealing with a crew of Russian mercenaries wreaking havoc in L.A. with hidden bombs. The episode ended with a big 'uh-oh' moment—a target on our heroes' backs they don't even know about. If Season 9 happens, it'd probably kick off resolving that mess, with the 20-Squad facing new threats and personal drama. The show's always mixed gritty action with real-world issues like racism, loyalty, and family, so expect more of that. Annie Ilonzeh, who plays Devin Gamble, teased in an interview that there are 'tons of stories left to explore' for the team. Maybe we'd see Hondo grappling with leadership challenges or Tan and Powell's arcs getting deeper. The writers have never been shy about throwing curveballs, so who knows what else they'd cook up? 13 Totally '90s Couples You Haven't Thought About in 30 Years

Talk about a blast from the past! Though it has been more than two decades since these couples held hands on a red carpet or cuddled up on a vintage couch, we dug through the archives and pulled out our favorite photos of these so very nostalgic pairings. From Toni Braxton and Shemar Moore's sexy award show looks to Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughey's adorable stares, take a look back at these couples you might not have thought about this millennium. In addition to starring in 1998's There's Something About Mary together, Dillon and Diaz also dated in the 1990s after meeting years prior on nearby film sets. She told Britain's Guardian in 1997, 'I love him incredibly.' Years after their relationship ended, Dillon told Parade, per CBS News, that Diaz was a "muse." "It's a very powerful thing when you feel that way about somebody," he said of falling in love. "Cameron was a muse for me. I hadn't been in any deep emotional relationships." Diaz now shares two children with husband Benji Madden. Stamos and Abdul, seen here in the early '90s, dated for a time and have kept up a friendship over the years. In 2015, Abdul shared a throwback photo of the pair alongside a reunion shot that Stamos posted on his own Instagram page as well. "Cold Hearted Snake and America's sweetheart," Stamos wrote. "Together again and it feels so good." Stamos married his wife Caitlin McHugh Stamos in 2018 and they welcomed their son Billy that same year. Wolf and Milano dated briefly in the early 1990s and were even engaged for six months before the relationship ended amicably in 1994. The Charmed alumna is now married to talent agent David Bugliari, with whom she has two children, and Wolf shares three children with his estranged wife Kelley Wolf. The two Oscar-winning actors dated after first meeting on the set of their 1996 film A Time To Kill. 'We dated for a while after A Time to Kill, and we're still friends,' he told Playboy in 2016. 'She and I have another version of our relationship to put on film, and we're looking for something. She's not a little girl. She's a woman. She could run a country.' McConaughey now shares three kids with his wife Camila Alves McConaughey while Bullock is mom to son Louis and daughter Laila. The two don't just share a dating history; they also both have deep ties to Austin, Tex. The S.W.A.T. star was one-half of a few iconic '90s couples — including this memorable pairing with the Grammy winner in 1995. While speaking with PEOPLE about his "pretty good entrance into Hollywood,' he explained how he became known as 'the guy who dated Halle Berry [in 1997] and Toni Braxton [in 1995]." Years later, Moore welcomed his first daughter Frankie with now ex-girlfriend Jesiree Dizon and Braxton welcomed two children with her ex-husband Keri Lewis. While the two played love interests onscreen as Felicity and Ben on Felicity from 1998 to 2002 they also dated off-screen for a time. (Did that make it awkward when Felicity decided to pursue Noel?) While they both are now in long term relationships with other people, the two remain dear friends. American Pie is about at '90s as it gets, and Fulong and Lyonne, who "were together for a while," attended the 1999 premiere of the movie together. In an interview with her friend Chloë Sevigny for Harper's Bazaar in 2014, Lyonne says she "was crazy for him on the [Detroit Rock City] movie set," in which the two costarred. Rimes and Keegan met as teenagers, she told The Sydney Morning Herald in 2022, and were first connected after she spotted him in a magazine. "I started dating Andrew Keegan at 15," she told the paper. "He was an actor in teen movies and we were together for three years. While filming a video clip for my song Commitment in Santa Monica, I flicked through a Teen Beat magazine and spotted him. I told my manager and hair and make-up artist that I thought he was cute. Next minute, my then manager called Andrew and asked if he wanted to meet me; that's how we hooked up." Keegan now shares daughter Aiya Rose with Arista Ilona while Rimes is married to Eddie Cibrian and is stepmother to his two sons. After meeting in 1995, Jewel and Penn had a brief romance, which she discussed in her book Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story. After seeing her perform on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Penn reached out to Jewel over the phone — a move her Alaska-based father first wrote off as a prank call. 'One day my dad came to find me, saying, 'Jewel, you must be getting some kooky fans out there in the Lower 48. Some guy just prank-called and said he was Sean Penn,'' she wrote. After asking her to compose a song for a movie he was working on, the two met and she found him 'charming, witty, and bright." Penn now shares two children with ex-wife Robin Wright while Rimes shares one son with ex Ty Murray. The two comedians dated in the 1990s though in a post to TikTok earlier this year, Griffin said "dating is a very loose term.' 'This is a picture of me and my then-boyfriend, Jack Black, who you probably know mostly from School of Rock,' she wrote alongside the throwback shot. 'So he was the first boyfriend I ever had where other bros thought I was cool because I was dating him." Griffin recalled their relationship further on TikTok, remembering a time she said, " 'I need a shower towel.' And he goes, 'You're standing on it. ' ... You guys, that's straight guys. He had one bath mat/towel that he used for both, and that was it. So naturally, I kept sleeping with him." In her book she writes that the pair "went out only two or three times, but that's a relationship in my book." Wilson and Barrymore, seen here in 1999, dated for a few years in the late 1990s, though years later the talk show host told Kate Hudson that for at least some of their time together it was an "open relationship." Hudson remembered meeting Barrymore for the first time while she was at dinner with Wilson, to which Barrymore responded, "I was dating him, but I think he was also dating other people ... "It was an open relationship; we were young." "We're just young, we're having fun, we're all playing, acting, hanging out," Barrymore continued. "You're not taking it all so seriously, and it was fun and we had the best time." Luke's older brother Owen was all loved up with then-girlfriend Crow at the 2000 premiere of Shanghai Noon. Per E! News, the pair began dating in 1999 after meeting on the set of The Minus Man and dated for two years. Crow is now mom to her two sons Wyatt and Levi. Friedle was on deck to support Hewitt at the 1997 premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer in Hollywood. The following year, Hewitt appeared on Friedle's show Boy Meets World as his character's love interest. And while the episode might be a fan favorite, Friedle said on an episode of the Pod Meets World podcast last year that the "super intense" makeout scene the two filmed is "uncomfortable" to watch now. Hewitt now shares three kids with her husband Brian Hallisay. Friedle married his wife Susan Martens in 2016. Read the original article on People

Glencoe woman duped by fake Shemar Moore wedding

A Glencoe woman narrowly escaped a costly scam after being led to believe she would marry Hollywood hunk Shemar Moore. The romance ruse reached the point where she had already booked a Dundee church for the ceremony and begun searching for caterers and a photographer Star-struck by the interest in her from the celebratory, she was hoodwinked by his charming messages and authentic references to Moore's career using generative AI to create video clips or voice memos that sound eerily realistic. This was followed by requests for help in needing to unblock funds held by international banks. Intrigued by the relationship, some of the woman's friends, including Jacques Greyvenstein of the Glencoe Neighbourhood Watch, investigated and found that the fake Moore held more than 12 Facebook and other digital accounts. She quickly stopped the communication and said she wanted to warn others from falling into the celebrity wedding trap. Celebrity romance scams aren't new. In fact, in 2023, BBC News reported on a UK police alert about a growing number of victims who had been tricked into sending money to people claiming to be celebrities Some operate fake charity initiatives or claim they need help accessing funds blocked by international banks. Then there's the heartbreaking case of a woman in the US who sent over $375,000 to someone pretending to be actor Martin Henderson. The fraudster built an emotional bond over time and made financial requests that escalated gradually. The victim, isolated and emotionally vulnerable, believed she was helping someone she loved. If someone claiming to be a celebrity contacts you online, keep your guard up. Watch for these red flags: • They reach out via private message and express romantic interest quickly. • They avoid real-time video calls or only send scripted video clips. • They ask you to keep the relationship secret. • They say they're dealing with lawsuits, frozen assets, or career problems. • They request money through wire transfer, crypto, or gift cards. • They pressure you to act urgently, either emotionally or financially. • They use overly emotional language like 'I trust you more than anyone.' Trust your intuition. If something seems a bit off, don't brush it aside. The chances are you're being conned. Create Account After S.W.A.T. ended its eight-season run last month, CBS announced it was moving forward on S.W.A.T. Exiles with Moore returning as Sgt. Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson. S.W.A.T. had one of the most devoted fanbases in all of television. CBS twice dropped the show, only to bring it back after an outcry from its devoted viewers. After it was cancelled for good back in March, Moore appealed to Netflix to give the show a new lease on life. 'Let me just remind you that in a very short period of time, once upon a time ago …it only took us about two weeks to go from number 15 … to number one,' Moore said on Instagram. 'And then we stayed in your top 10, top 15 for about six months, nine months, maybe a year. So Netflix, if you're interested in a show that is on autopilot that the world is watching, we'd love to come play. NBC, Fox, ABC, hey, you want to come flirt with me? You're invited to the barbecue. The streamer didn't bite, but CBS execs gave a green light to Exiles with Moore the only returning star. Moore, 55, celebrated the news with a lengthy Instagram video telling his followers he was 'excited and grateful' for their support. But he also rankled some fans of the show by calling himself the 'Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.' 'Y'all paid attention. Y'all tuned in. You rallied for us eight years,' he said. 'We won, and without those eight years, there is no future of S.W.A.T. , and there is a future for S.W.A.T. , and it's called S.W.A.T. Exiles . So, we start shooting this summer. I'm not saying I'm Tom Brady, but I'm the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T. — that's not arrogant, that's not ego, it's the fact. I'm the quarterback. I'm Shemar Moore, aka Hondo.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Shemar Moore of the CBS series S.W.A.T. Photo by Smallz + Raskind / SONY He continued: 'Tom Brady might be the quarterback, but you know, people get traded. Tight ends get traded. The running back gets traded, the receivers get traded but the teams keep pushing with their quarterback and I'm that guy, so proud so grateful, not gonna apologize for nothing. Busted my ass for 31 years to do what I do, and excited for the future.' Of course, Moore's comments ruffled some feathers with his co-stars. Jay Harrington, who played Sgt. David 'Deacon' Kay on the series, said that he learned of the spinoff after getting a text from Moore. 'It was the day before. Shemar reached out to to all of us to say, 'This is what's going on…,' and, you know, there's talk that they'll reach out to us about stuff,' Harrington told TVLine this week . 'He wanted to be the one to tell us, and say 'your reps will find out shortly.' That's when I told my reps, and they had no idea.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Harrington said Moore invited him to give him a call and he told the website he sent the actor a text. 'I texted him later and said, 'I'm sure you did your best.' We've been brothers for years, so that doesn't change.' But Harrington said he has moved on and called his exclusion part of ' show business.' ' I've been in this business for a long time. You don't get 'owed' things just because you put in your time. … if there was any disappointment, it's that when they announced it, we weren't mentioned at all. That was it. And it was short-lived because I thought, 'I'm not going to let that take away from what I know in my heart is eight years of putting in some great work,'' he said. Shemar Moore and Jay Harrington in a scene from 'S.W.A.T.' Photo by CBS Fellow co-star David Lim, who played Victor Tan, also sounded off on the spinoff. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'I'd be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn't sting,' he wrote in an Instagram post. 'It was tough to see it announced just two days after our finale — with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one. After 8 incredible seasons, it felt like we were brushed aside when there could've been a moment of reflection and recognition — for the people who built this show, and for the impact it had on so many.' Lim also said that the cast 'fought' to get S.W.A.T. renewed for ninth season saying everyone involved 'believed we still had more to give, more stories to tell.' 'We wanted it for our crew, for each other, and for the newer faces just joining us. It wasn't in the cards for all of us—and that's okay,' he wrote. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. In an interview with Variety , Sony Pictures Television president Katherine Pope said the door isn't completely closed on Moore's S.W.A.T. castmates joining him in the spinoff. 'It's a universe. There is a clear world that we're exploring here. We're a few weeks in. We're still putting it all together, but for sure, I think you can expect some of your favourites to be a part of it in some way,' she said in an interview last month. According to Deadline, the new series will follow Hondo after he is drawn out of retirement to lead a S.W.A.T. unit made up of untested recruits. mdaniell@ Read More NHL Columnists Columnists Columnists Columnists

Shemar Moore Lands ‘S.W.A.T.' Spinoff After Season 8 Finale: Everything to Know About ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles'

Shemar Moore is breathing new life into the S.W.A.T. franchise. Just when viewers thought the show was done following the May 2025 series finale on CBS, it was announced that Sony Pictures Television was developing a spinoff of the series. Closer shares everything to know about the upcoming spinoff called S.W.A.T. Exiles. S.W.A.T. was canceled by CBS after eight seasons. The series finale aired on the network on May 16, 2025. The official logline for S.W.A.T. Exiles says, 'After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Hondo is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.' A press release from Sony Pictures promised that the show will "deliver the same high stakes drama and intense action sequences that fans have come to know and love.' The spinoff was greenlit for 10 episodes despite the fact that the show 'has not yet been sold to any outlets, either domestically or internationally,' per Variety. Sony is expecting 'the right homes and partners for these new stories to reach the passionate S.W.A.T. fanbase and attract new viewers.' So far, it has been confirmed that Shemar will be returning to reprise his role as Hondo, as well as serving as an executive producer on the project. 'My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable,' the actor said in a statement. 'We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony.' "I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON'T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!" he said. Jason Ning will serve as showrunner and executive producer of S.W.A.T. Exiles. 'It's an incredible honor to carry forward the legacy of a show that fans around the world have come to love,' he said. 'Working with Shemar Moore, who defines what it means to be a leading man, and introducing a new generation of characters into this world is a dream.' So far, Shemar's return is the only casting news that has been confirmed so far. 'We couldn't be more excited to bring the next chapter of S.W.A.T. to life — both for our incredibly dedicated fans of the original franchise and for a new generation of viewers,' Katherine Pope, SPT Studios President, said. 'We're grateful to our incredible partners Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Jason Ning and Shemar Moore for embarking on this journey with us. This team's commitment to the global fanbase, to our beloved crew and to our city runs deep!' According to Deadline, 'the 200-person production crew that helped to make S.W.A.T. a success for CBS will get to keep their jobs when production resumes this summer in Los Angeles.'
