The Liverpudlian told the Daily Mirror: 'It's a strange experience seeing other people recreating your life... I was a bit worried when I heard that Sheridan was playing me because I'd only ever seen her as Mrs Biggs'. However she added: 'I needn't have worried because Sheridan is absolutely terrific. It comes as Blind Date is set to make a sensational return to TV after 22 years away from screens. The legendary dating show - famously hosted by the late Cilla Black from 1985 to 2003 - is eyeing up Claudia Winkleman, Holly Willoughby or Davina McCall to host the revival. MailOnline has contacted Disney+ for comment. In March, former This Morning host Holly was tipped to become the next Cilla, with the presenter lining up a string of big-money deals worth up to £10million. The revival was previously being considered by Holly's husband Dan Baldwin, and the star had previously stepped into Cilla's shoes when she hosted a reboot of Surprise Surprise. Originally broadcast on ITV in 2014, Cilla stars Sheridan as the legendary singer Cilla Black. The series delves into the early stages of Cilla's career and explores how her life was transformed upon meeting Brian Epstein, the manager of The Beatles. Sheridan is joined by a stellar cast including Aneurin Barnard as Cilla's husband Bobby, Ed Stoppard portraying Brian Epstein, John Henshaw as Cilla's father, and Melanie Hill as Cilla's mother. The official synopsis for Cilla reads: "'Cilla' tells of her rocky rise to fame and will capture the essence of 1960s Liverpool, the atmosphere of promise and excitement as the Merseybeat music scene was on the verge of exploding in a blaze of tight-fitting skirts, stiletto heels, and beehives." The drama looks at how she met the two men who came to love her and ultimately fought over her - future husband Bobby Willis and legendary manager Brian Epstein, the tragic young businessman who also guided the career of The Beatles. "We learn how Cilla's burgeoning friendship with John, Paul, George, and Ringo - the four young men who went on to conquer the music world - shaped her career. "It was family friend Ritchie Starkey (Ringo), the teddy-boy with a greasy quiff, who helped her to cross paths with Brian Epstein and producer George Martin, who were to launch her career with recording sessions at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios." The series has garnered high praise from viewers, many of whom have lauded Sheridan Smith's stunning representation of Cilla, née Priscilla Maria Veronica White, reports Surrey Live. "Brilliant portrayal of Cilla by Sheridan Smith, who also sings all the songs! Wow! The whole cast were fabulous. One not to be missed," exclaimed one viewer on Google. Another telly buff penned: "Brilliant. Loved this series, Smith always smashes it," while another chimed in, adding: "Great performance by all and gives a great feel for the early 60's in Liverpool."

Netflix viewers rush to watch 'astonishing' drama about beloved British icon
A three-episode drama about the British TV icon Cilla Black's rise to fame, starring Sheridan Smith, has smashed into the Netflix top 10. The synopsis for ITV series, Cilla, from 2014 – also featuring Aneurin Barnard and John Hanshaw – reads: 'Working as a typist, Cilla Black dreams of stardom – but when her voice garners attention, fame brings its own mix of triumphs and trials.' The show came out a year before the real-life singer and TV show host died in 2015 from a form of stroke known as a subarachnoid haemorrhage. Cilla was well known across the UK after starting her career as a singer – supported by The Beatles in the 60s. After topping the charts with hits like Anyone Who Had a Heart and You're My World, she pivoted to TV show hosting. Most famously, she was the face of the long-running dating game show Blind Date from 1985 to 2003 and captivated audiences with her unique charm and onscreen personality. The show specifically portrays her early career and the life-changing impact of the Beatles' manager Brian Epstein on the Liverpool native who was born Priscilla Maria Veronica White. The titular star is played by Sheridan herself, to rave reviews. 'Brilliant portrayal of Cilla by Sheridan Smith who also sings all the songs! Wow! The whole cast were fabulous. One not to be missed!,' Julia Hawkes wrote on Google reviews. 'Great performance by all and gives a great feel for the early 60's in Liverpool,' Helen McEntee echoed. 'Brilliant. Loved this series, Smith always smashes it,' Sarah Jane added. 'Its so so so so so good!! Sheridan Smith is astonishing, I genuinely forget I'm not watching Cilla herself!' Emma Hilts said. As well as receiving the seal of approval from Black herself, the praise was also echoed by critics at the time. 'Smith makes sense as Cilla because both women are talented performers whose lovable, down-to-earth personalities disguise an unswerving/hard-nosed ambition,' The Independent shared. 'Smith's rendition of Anyone Who Had a Heart, which closed last night's episode on a triumphant high, was if anything more impressive than Black's own recording, her voice darker, bluesier and better suited to contemporary tastes. It could easily be a hit in its own right,' The Telegraph reflected. Speaking about the experience bringing together this legend, Smith told The Mirror: 'This show is about Cilla and capturing the buzz of the Merseybeat era. There's never going to be a time like that again. More Trending 'I wish I was around in that era, but playing Cilla is the next best thing. She is an icon and I just hope I do her story justice.' The sitcom star reprised her role as Black to play her on stage in 2020 for Bill Kenwright's stage production Cilla The Musical. View More » Cilla is available to stream on Netflix now. Got a story? Emmerdale star Charley Webb enjoys theatre trip with close friend Sheridan Smith after pair were spotted holding hands
EMMERDALE star Charley Webb enjoyed a theatre trip with her close friend Sheridan Smith after the pair were spotted holding hands on a night out. In April, The Sun revealed Sheridan, 43, had split from ex-boxer Dave Ryan while Charley, 37, and her actor husband Matthew Wolfenden, 45, separated last year. 6 Since then, Charley and Sheridan have struck up a budding friendship, with the Gavin & Stacey star receiving a visit from Charley while filming BBC drama The Cage in Liverpool. Now, the duo have enjoyed a night at the theatre, posing for a selfie from their seats. Sharing the moment to her Instagram Story, Charley wrote: 'Excited. Our House,' alongside a performing arts emoji. The show in question is thought to be a local performance of Our House: The Madness Musical - which features hits by the ska band Madness. Their friendship seems to have blossomed just as both women navigate new chapters in their personal lives. Charley shares three sons, Buster, Bowie, and Ace, with Matthew, her co-star and now estranged husband. Though they split in 2023, the pair remain committed to co-parenting. Sheridan, meanwhile, has a four-year-old son named Billy with her former fiancé Jamie Horn, from whom she separated in 2021. After Charley moved out of her £900,000 Yorkshire home in late 2023, she stayed with Sheridan, finding comfort with her fellow single mum. Their bond grew further last summer when they jetted off to Greece for a sun-soaked holiday. Sheridan Smith glams up tiny black dress on holiday as she parties with Emmerdale's Charley Webb The two even spent Christmas together, which Charley called her 'favourite Christmas yet', sharing joyful snaps of their celebrations. 6 6 6 6
