Police say Barton physically assaulted a deputy while trying to resist arrest.
Police placed Barton into custody and transported him to the Shannon County Jail.
When Barton arrived at the jail's booking room, he tried to steal a deputy's weapon.
'If you assault one of my deputies, you are not just attacking a law enforcement officer, you are attacking the safety and order of this entire county,' Sheriff Steven Hogan said in the post. 'What David Barton did was reckless, dangerous and could have ended in tragedy. The moment he reached for that weapon, he made a choice — a choice that will follow him for the rest of his life.'
Barton is currently in the Shannon County Jail with a $5,000 bond.
