Domestic helper jailed for stealing $12,000 from elderly employers

A 31-year-old domestic helper from Myanmar was sentenced to nine months' jail on June 24 for stealing a total of $12,000 from her elderly employers over a period of one month. Ei Zin Phyu had been working for an 81-year-old woman and her 82-year-old husband, residing with them in their flat along Hougang Avenue 8. The helper frequently accompanied the male employer on ATM visits and assisted with cash withdrawals. During these trips, she memorised the PIN for his ATM card and observed that he kept his wallet in a drawer in the living room. Between Dec 5, 2023, and Jan 13, 2024, Phyu stole the ATM card on 11 occasions and withdrew sums ranging from $500 to $1,500 each time. These amounted to a total of $12,000. On some days, she made two withdrawals. She then transferred the stolen sums to Myanmar using the Singtel Dash e-wallet service at convenience stores. While she claimed the money was sent home to repay medical debts left by her late father, some funds were reportedly used to purchase gold in Myanmar. The theft came to light on Jan 19, when the female employer noticed discrepancies in their bank account and questioned Phyu. The couple's daughter-in-law was subsequently informed and made a police report. According to Shin Min Daily News, Phyu told the court that her mother had incurred significant debt from her father's medical treatment, and that she had acted out of desperation after repeated distressing phone calls from home. She added that she regretted her actions and pleaded for leniency. However, the court noted that Phyu had not made any restitution. The male employer told Shin Min that he had first realised his ATM card was missing from his wallet, which led to the discovery of the unauthorised withdrawals. "I didn't confront her directly. But I knew she had taken it. The police later questioned her and eventually took her away," he said, adding that the stolen card was never recovered. The couple has since hired a new helper to assist with their daily needs.

SINGAPORE: A man who passed away after a recent mishap at Admiralty Road was a single father who worked hard for the sake of his daughter, who is five years old. According to a report in Shin Min Daily News, Chan Yong Kang, 30, lived in Johor Bahru. He worked both as a food delivery rider back home as well as an electrician in Singapore to pay for his divorce proceedings as well as to support his little girl. The incident occurred last Friday (June 20) shortly past 3 pm, when Mr Chan was on a motorcycle on the way home from work. The accident involved two trucks and two motorcycles. News reports quote the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) as saying that the other person on a motorcycle, a 56-year-old man, had been conscious when he was taken to Woodlands Health Campus. Videos of the aftermath of the incident were shared on social media. Reports say that Mr Chan was pinned under a garbage truck and died of injuries to the head. A devoted father Mr Chan, who had worked in Singapore for over a decade, was described by his family as a devoted father who never skipped spending time with his little girl on weekends in spite of his heavy work schedule. 'She was the centre of his world. Although he was always busy, he made it a point to return to Batu Pahat every weekend to be with her. 'She's only 5 and doesn't fully understand what death means, but when she saw her father's body, she couldn't hold back her tears,' his older sister was quoted as saying in The New Straits Times. According to Mr Chan's younger brother, Chan Yong Soo, he got up before 4 o'clock each morning to go to Singapore for his job, which ended at 3 pm. After getting back to Johor Bahru, he would then start his second job delivering food until 7 pm when he called it a day. Chan Yong Soo and Chan Chai Lian were also quoted as saying their brother drove carefully, despite speculation online that said otherwise. Ms Chan described her brother as 'a hardworking and down-to-earth person', adding, 'He had elderly parents and a young child to support, so he worked diligently.' She also said that despite the financial challenges their family is facing, they will seek to gain custody of Mr Chan's daughter and raise the little girl. /TISG Read also: About half of the children involved in road accidents were not wearing seatbelts: KKH

Teens behave erratically after allegedly using drug-laced ‘Kpods' in Punggol, Singapore News

Several teenagers were spotted behaving erratically after allegedly using drug-laced 'Kpods' vaporisers outside a mall in Punggol. According to Shin Min Daily News, the incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday (June 24) at around 1am. In a video uploaded to Sgfollowsall Instagram on June 24, youths could be seen stumbling unsteadily, walking in a zombie-like manner, with one collapsing and another struggling to walk straight after allegedly using the drug-laced vapes. Unlike regular vape liquids, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has warned that 'Kpods' contain etomidate — an anaesthetic agent classified as a poison under the Poisons Act. According to the person who recorded the video, the incident took place at Punggol Waterway. The person also reportedly called the police after leaving the scene. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sgfollowsall (@sgfollowsall) When Shin Min visited the scene on June 24, they observed that the incident took place not far from Punggol MRT Station. Shin Min quoted teenagers as saying that the area, known for its spaciousness and convenience, is a popular hangout spot among youngsters. However, none of them recognised the youths featured in the video. Nearby shop owners also told the Chinese daily that the area is a popular gathering spot for youths, especially after 8pm. The shop owners also noted that teenagers frequently gather there to smoke e-cigarettes, ride bicycles, and eat, with crowds sometimes swelling to as many as 50 people. In the comments section of the video post, several netizens have also expressed concern about the growing trend of vaping among teenagers. One netizen highlighted the serious dangers associated with 'Kpods', while another expressed hope that more support and intervention would be provided for the affected youths. Under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act, purchase, possession and use of e-vaporisers are prohibited, including purchases made through the internet and from overseas. Offenders can be fined up to $2,000, and those possessing or using pods containing etomidate can face a maximum penalty of imprisonment for up to 2 years and a fine of up to $10,000 under the Poisons Act. Boy, 9, has kidney removed after falling at Bukit Batok playground, Singapore News

A nine-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after falling from the monkey bars at a playground in Bukit Batok, resulting in the removal of one of his kidneys. According to Shin Min Daily News on Tuesday (June 24), the incident occurred on June 20 at around 6pm at a playground beside Block 443D, Bukit Batok West Avenue 8. Speaking to Shin Min reporters, the boy's father, Liu Zhiyuan (transliteration), said his son was playing with about four to five other children when he fell from the monkey bars, hitting his abdomen on a plastic divider. The monkey bar from which the boy fell was about 1.8 metres high, according to Shin Min. The 46-year-old air-conditioning technician added that his son, Liu Junwen (transliteration), came home crying and complaining of pain, with no visible external injuries except for a noticeably pale face. The situation escalated when Liu's wife, Zheng Meiyan (transliteration), 38, noticed their son was urinating blood while showering him. Realising the seriousness of the condition, the couple rushed him to the hospital around 9 pm that same evening. Zheng told Shin Min that subsequent X-ray scans confirmed that her son's right kidney was severely ruptured, and that immediate surgery was necessary as the injury was potentially life-threatening. An operation lasting three to four hours was carried out at midnight on June 21, during which doctors discovered a 10-centimetre rupture in the boy's kidney, which had to be removed. Currently recovering in the Intensive Care Unit at National University Hospital, the boy is unable to eat solid food and is being fed through a feeding tube. Zheng added that the boy would have to remain under observation for another two days. Liu said he did not expect his son's injury to be so serious and hoped their experience will serve as a cautionary tale for other parents. "I never imagined something like this could happen... Hopefully this incident will remind other parents that it's still best to have an adult present when children are playing," said Liu. As the sole breadwinner of a family of five, Liu told the Chinese daily that aside from the mounting medical expenses which he estimated to hit a five-figure sum, he is worried about possible long-term complications that may affect his son's daily life. Parents reminded to supervise children at playgrounds Last year on Dec 24, a two-year-old was taken to the hospital after being struck on the head by a falling object while playing at a playground in Sengkang. The toddler was left with a 1cm by 1.2cm head wound that had to be sealed with tissue adhesive. According to HealthHub Singapore, parents are reminded to keep watch of their children while they play at the playground and to ensure that the equipment is safe and suitable for their kids. Parents are also advised to teach their children to be cautious when playing, to prevent potential hazards and reduce the risk of injuries. [[nid:622987]]
