New Trailer For The 4K Release of SHIN GODZILLA — GeekTyrant
Shin Godzilla is coming back to the big screen in 4K, so I'f you missed the movie when it was first released in 2016, now is your chance to experience on the big screen! GKIDS has acquired the North American distribution rights to Shin Godzilla , the acclaimed Japanese reboot directed by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno and Shin Ultraman director Shinji Higuchi. The distributor will be unleashing the film in U.S. theaters on August 14th, complete with its original Japanese audio, restored text cards, and for the first time in North America, a 4K remaster. A home release is also on the way. GKIDS President David Jesteadt previously had this to say about the announcement: 'With an incredibly timely story of people struggling to work together to stop imminent destruction, backed by some of the most explosive action scenes the franchise has ever seen, Shin Godzilla is a modern masterpiece. We are honored to play a part in bringing the film back for American fans, better than ever.' This marks GKIDS' first venture into the Godzilla universe since Toho's acquisition of the franchise in 2024. It also continues the studio's commitment to spotlighting essential Japanese cinema, following their nationwide theatrical rollout of Hideaki Anno's Love and Pop earlier this year. Shin Godzilla is a political thriller, a disaster film, and a bold reinvention of the Godzilla mythos. Godzilla fans fete the monster as it turns 70
The Japanese studio Toho, which created Godzilla, maintains a calendar of events to celebrate the beast often called the king of monsters, and Comic-Con is on the agenda. Godzilla was born on November 3, 1954 with the launch of the first movie about it, directed by Ishiro Honda. "I am a very big fan of Godzilla," said Angela Hill, a teacher who traveled from Arizona to take part in Comic-Con, which this year featured events and displays celebrating Godzilla. One of the world's largest celebrations of pop culture, Comic-Con brings together 130,000 people, many of whom come dressed as wizards, princesses or characters from movies, games or TV series. As the story of Godzilla goes, a prehistoric amphibious beast is awakened and mutated by nuclear bomb testing in the Pacific. It emerges from the sea and attacks Japan in a rage, symbolizing the deadly power of nukes. "I think because he came from such a historic event -- like, a lot of other monsters are just interesting creatures, but they don't hold the grief of a nation," Hill said, referring to the US nuclear bomb attacks against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II. At the pop culture watering hole in San Diego, people lined up to shoot pictures and video with an image of Godzilla, which was also the theme of a panel discussion on Friday that featured Shinji Higuchi, who co-directed a reboot in 2016 called "Shin Godzilla." The movie franchise includes nearly 40 films and has spawned hundreds of animated productions about the monster as well as TV series and graphic work. - 'Rooting for him' - On Saturday the writers Ed Godziszewski and Steve Ryfle signed autographs of their book "Godzilla: The First 70 Years," which sold out at Comic-Con. "It's a rich history," Ryfle told AFP. "This is the longest running feature film franchise in cinematic history that's focused on a single, continuous character. It's been around longer than James Bond." He said the key to its longevity is that Godzilla has evolved over time but stayed faithful to its origins. "Godzilla has been serious, it's been scary, it's been heroic, it's been funny. But at the same time this is a movie character that's rooted in something that's very real," Ryfle said. "And that's the trauma that Japan experienced, both during World War II, and also the trauma of the aftermath of World War II, the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki," he added. He said Honda, who directed the first Godzilla movie, was a veteran who used the film to send a message against war and in particular against nuclear weapons. Michelle Pena, a Godzilla fan who waited in line to get the autograph of the two writers, said part of the monster's charm is how it has changed over the years. "Good, bad, hero, anti-hero, you know. GODZILLA MINUS ONE Sequel Could Stomp Into Theaters by 2026, and SHIN GODZILLA Might Return — GeekTyrant
Godzilla fans, brace yourselves. Toho has big plans for the King of the Monsters, and they might arrive sooner than expected. According to Toho International head Koji Ueda, a sequel to Godzilla Minus One could land as early as 2026. In a conversation with Bloomberg, Ueda revealed that the studio is actively working on multiple projects, including a possible follow-up to Shin Godzilla and another untitled film described as being 'Southeast Asia-focused.' On top of that, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+ has also been renewed for a second season, so the Godzilla universe is showing no signs of slowing down. We already knew a Godzilla Minus One sequel was coming, but the timeline is surprising. Earlier this year, director Takashi Yamazaki confirmed he was deep into the screenplay and storyboards. He also teased that the follow-up would have a bigger budget, which is a thrilling prospect after the jaw-dropping visuals that earned the first film an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Set in post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One follows a kamikaze pilot grappling with PTSD as he builds a new life, only to face an unimaginable threat as Godzilla rampage's through Tokyo. The film impressed Hollywood heavy hitters like Kevin Feige, James Gunn, and even drew praise from Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise. Meanwhile, Shin Godzilla, directed by Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno, last appeared in 2016, giving us a terrifying vision of a constantly evolving Godzilla that had fans clamoring for more. ‘Shin Godzilla' Is Getting the Re-Release It Deserves
When Shin Godzilla hit US shores back in 2016, its home releases were a bit of a mess—especially after it exited theaters in what was, before the release of Godzilla Minus One at least, a historic run for the franchise. But, almost a decade later, the film is now stomping back to theaters… and beyond that, finally getting the home release scenario it deserved in the first place. As revealed by Variety today, GKids has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to Shin Godzilla (which had previously been owned by Funimation, who released the film back in 2016 as the first Japanese Godzilla film to hit US theaters since Godzilla 2000). GKids will release a new 4K version of Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno's modernized spin on the kaiju icon in theaters starting August 14, but crucially the studio will also be releasing a new, UHD home release of the film in 4K, the first time the film will have been made available in the format in the U.S. Something has surfaced in Tokyo Bay. Newly remastered in 4K, SHIN GODZILLA from directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi returns to North American theatres starting August — GKIDS Films (@GKIDSfilms) June 2, 2025 Beyond the remastering, the new home release will also restore the stylized text cards that were removed in subtitled versions of Shin Godzilla's previous U.S. home release. Part of the film's commentary on the administrative absurdity of Japanese governmental bureaucracy, giving officials and projects overtly long and formalized titles, the theatrical release displayed the text captions in a stylized manner alongside the original Japanese, but home releases instead ran a clean version of the film removing them, replacing the titles with default subtitling. Sure, the commentary still came across, but it just didn't look anywhere near as good, and arguably made for an even worse subtitling experience. But after the runaway success of Godzilla Minus One in 2023, it's good to see Toho and GKids capitalizing to do justice to another entry in the Godzilla saga that remains just as timely as it did a decade ago. Shin Godzilla will return to American theaters from August 14, with the new 4K home release set to follow at a later date.
