Elon Musk confirms next SpaceX Starship test flight coming soon after recent setbacks
SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the company plans to launch the next test flight of its massive Starship rocket in 'about three weeks.' The announcement came via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on July 14, 2025. If the timeline holds, it would mark the 10th test flight of Starship, the largest and most powerful rocket ever built, and its fourth mission this year. The flight follows a string of technical setbacks, including the explosion of a Ship upper stage during a test and the loss of control in previous flights. Despite these hurdles, SpaceX remains committed to advancing Starship's goal of enabling interplanetary travel and rapid, reusable orbital missions. SpaceX Starship's recent failures The upcoming launch follows a bumpy path for SpaceX's Starship program. On June 18, the upper stage (referred to as "Ship") originally slated for Flight 10 exploded on a test stand at the company's Starbase facility in South Texas. Investigations pointed to a failed pressurized nitrogen tank in the vehicle's nosecone. SpaceX has since begun preparing a replacement Ship vehicle for the mission. This incident adds to previous in-flight failures: Flights 7, 8, and 9—all launched in 2025—ended with the vehicle being lost during or after ascent. Techno Mag Learn More Undo While the ship has encountered repeated issues, the Super Heavy booster—the rocket's massive first stage—has delivered more consistent performance. During Flights 7 and 8, the booster successfully returned to Starbase and was even caught by the launch tower's mechanical 'chopstick' arms. Flight 9 also featured the first-ever reuse of a Super Heavy booster. However, during reentry, that reused booster broke apart over the Gulf of Mexico shortly after initiating its landing burn. What's next for Starship Flight 10 Flight 10 will be the 10th fully integrated launch of the Starship-Super Heavy system. If successful, it will help SpaceX demonstrate improved reusability and system reliability, key to the company's ambitions of using Starship for lunar missions, space station resupply, and eventually Mars colonization . SpaceX has not yet disclosed a specific target date, but if preparations go as planned, the launch could occur by early August 2025. Long-term vision: Moon, Mars, and beyond SpaceX's ultimate goal for Starship is to serve as a fully reusable transport system for large payloads and humans to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The rocket stands nearly 400 feet tall when fully stacked and is powered by Raptor engines fueled by liquid methane and liquid oxygen. With each launch, the company collects valuable data to refine the vehicle's design and operations. Despite recent failures, Musk has reiterated that iterative testing and rapid development are central to SpaceX's approach. Starbase, SpaceX's sprawling launch site in Boca Chica, Texas, continues to be a key hub for Starship development. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is closely monitoring the program and will need to approve the upcoming launch. Local and international space enthusiasts are watching closely, eager to see if Starship can deliver on its promise of revolutionizing space travel.

Japan's ‘hikikomori' finding voice through self-determination
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox A Japanese magazine called Ship was launched in April 2025. It is planned, edited and published by people who have experience either as or with social recluses. Japan is home to some 1.5 million 'hikikomori', the Japanese term for individuals who withdraw from society and self-isolate, often in their elderly parents' homes. A new quarterly Japanese magazine, called Ship – planned, edited and published by people who have experience either as or with hikikomori – was launched in April 2025 . The publication seeks to shake up society to allow social recluses to live happily, by giving voice to those who have previously suffered in silence. The national government, meanwhile, has also established new support guidelines that emphasise the 'autonomy' of hikikomori and encourage dialogue that respects their choices. Ms Rika Ueda, 53, a member of the quarterly's publishing team, went through a spell as a hikikomori in her 20s. 'I took refuge away from society,' she said of that time. After graduating from college, Ms Ueda changed jobs two dozen times. She was a part of Japan's Employment Ice Age generation consisting of those who struggled to enter the workforce in a decade-long period from the mid-1990s. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Adding to the difficult environment, discrimination against women was also rampant, characterised by overwork, power harassment and the reduction of part-time and temporary staff. Given these challenges, Ms Ueda's inclination towards social withdrawal deepened. Ms Ueda said each time she became unable to move forward, she felt like 'a nobody in this society '. Her mother blamed herself for 'not being able to put her daughter on the right track in life ', and both shut themselves off from the outside world. One day, at a family gathering in Tokyo, Ms Ueda was shocked to hear a man who was also a shut-in talk about his experiences of feeling like society had become his enemy. Similarly, Ms Ueda had suppressed her feelings while harbouring distrust for anyone outside those close to her. 'I wasn't the only one ', she thought, and the understanding that she was among others facing the same struggles gave her a feeling of redemption. The quarterly is edited by people affected by hikikomori, parents and supporters who met at hikikomori-related events and family meetings around the country. Ship is an acronym for Social, Human Rights, Inclusive, Peer – a reflection of the group's values. The special feature of its inaugural issue in April 2025 was Breaking Down Preconceived Notions. The content included personal stories from individuals and their families, as well as interviews with experts, and explored the background of the difficulties people face in life, such as prejudice, lack of understanding and peer pressure. According to a Cabinet Office survey published in 2023, there are an estimated 1.46 million people between the ages of 15 and 64 who are socially withdrawn in Japan. Despite various triggers and circumstances, government support has until recently emphasised independence through employment and other means, and there have been many cases where individuals have been driven into a corner by a uniform response to the problem. Feeling like there is no way out, some, particularly those who fall under the banner of the '8050 problem' – referring to a situation where parents in their 80s are financially and emotionally supporting hikikomori adult children in their 50s – have turned to shady businesses that remove shut-ins from their homes, often by force, at the request of parents. These operators are known as 'hikidashi-ya' – translating literally to 'one who pulls (someone) out'. It is believed they purport to take social recluses to 'rehabilitation centres ' and charge exorbitant fees for the service. There have been a number of civil court decisions in various parts of the country that have gone against them. In January 2025 , seven men in their 20s to 40s who lived in the Kanto region among other areas successfully claimed in a class action suit that they were forcibly taken from their homes and confined in a facility in Kanagawa Prefecture by a firm purporting to support the 'independence of social recluse '. The same month, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced a new guideline for use at local government offices, called The Hikikomori Support Handbook: A Compass for Supporting Hikikomori. It states that employment and social participation are merely a means to an end, and that the goal should be autonomy to allow people to decide how they want to live their lives focused on dialogue, including with family members. The Tokyo-based network that publishes Ship held a series of events in May 2025 – a total of 10 lectures introducing the perspective of shut-ins – featuring specific examples from the newly published support handbook. 'Dialogue means not forcing the 'right' answer on the other person, ' Ship's Ms Ueda said. 'I want to make it possible for everyone to feel that it is okay to value their own voice in the rough and tumble of society, and not have their voices silenced.' KYODO NEWS

SpaceX's Starship Explodes in Texas During Preflight Testing
3 min read The latest catastrophic explosion of a Starship upper stage is a significant setback for SpaceX By & SpaceX's newest Starship vehicle just went up in smoke. The company was testing a Starship upper stage at its Starbase site in South Texas on Wednesday night (June 18), to prepare for the megarocket's upcoming 10th flight test. But something went very wrong, as video captured by shows: The vehicle exploded, sending a massive fireball high into the dark Texas skies. SpaceX acknowledged the incident in an X post early on Thursday morning (June 19), noting that it occurred around 11 p.m. local time (midnight EDT and 0400 GMT on June 19). "A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for," SpaceX added in the post. "Our Starbase team is actively working to safe the test site and the immediate surrounding area in conjunction with local officials. There are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities, and we ask that individuals do not attempt to approach the area while safing operations continue." SpaceX is developing Starship, the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built, to help humanity colonize Mars, among other ambitious exploration tasks. The vehicle consists of two elements, both of which are designed to be fully and rapidly reusable — a first-stage booster called Super Heavy and a 171-foot-tall (52 meters) upper-stage spacecraft known as Starship, or simply Ship. It was Ship that exploded on Wednesday night, on a test stand at Starbase's Massey site (not the orbital launch mount, from which Starship liftoffs occur). According to NASASpaceflight, which closely monitors Starship activity at Starbase, the anomaly occurred just before Ship was set to perform a static-fire test. Static fires are common prelaunch tests, in which a rocket's engines are briefly ignited while the vehicle remains anchored to the ground. SpaceX had already conducted a static fire with this Ship, though that trial involved just one of its Raptor engines; this test may have been intended to fire up all six of them. SpaceX has also already static-fired the Flight 10 Super Heavy booster, successfully igniting all 33 of its Raptors. Wednesday night's explosion continued a string of setbacks for Starship upper stages. Ship has broken apart on the last three Starship test flights, which launched in January, March and May of this year. On Flight 7 and Flight 8, the "rapid unscheduled disassembly" occurred less than 10 minutes after liftoff. Ship flew significantly farther on Flight 9; SpaceX lost contact with the vehicle about 46 minutes after liftoff, and its pieces are likely resting on the Indian Ocean seabed. Super Heavy has performed better. On Flight 7 and Flight 8, for example, the booster returned to Starbase after launch for a dramatic catch by the launch tower's "chopstick" arms. The Flight 7 Super Heavy flew again on Flight 9, notching a major reusability milestone for the Starship program. (SpaceX did not attempt to recover the booster on Flight 9, and it broke apart as it was coming in for a planned "hard splashdown" in the Gulf of Mexico.) SpaceX is still looking into what happened on Flight 9, an investigation overseen by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. So there was not yet an official target launch date for Starship Flight 10 — and, if there had been, it would now have to be revised after the events of Wednesday night.

UK seaside town close to shipwreck that's feared to blow up at any second
Fresh concerns the UK's 'doomsday ship' could blow up were sparked after a cargo ship was recently spotted sailing perilously close to the exclusion zone An unassuming seaside town with pastel beach huts and pebble shores is bizarrely home to its very own ticking time bomb. Situated on the northwest corner of the Isle of Sheppey in north Kent, Sheerness looks like any other coastal resort at first glance. With sweeping views of the Thames Estuary, rows of flashing arcades, a slew of fish and chip shops, and a popular promenade that runs along a shingle beach - it ticks all of the quintessential seaside must-haves. Dating back to the Bronze Age, Sheerness' history is what really sets it apart from the rest. It owes much of its origins as a Royal Naval dockyard town, after Henry VIII required the River Medway as an anchorage for his army, and ordered that the mouth of the river be protected by a small fort. Samuel Pepys established the Royal Navy Dockyard in the 17th century, where warships were stocked and repaired until its closure in 1960. But, in 1944, just a year before the Second World War came to an end, a US Liberty Ship named SS Richard Montgomery, was loaded with around 7,000 tons of munitions and joined over convoys bound for the UK and then on to Cherbourg in France. After arriving in the Thames Estuary, the vessel was directed to anchor in the Great Nore just off Sheerness to wait for instructions to cross the Channel. However, on August 20, it all went wrong. "The vessel grounded amidships on the crest of the sandbank. Intensive efforts began to unload her cargo," GOV UK explains. "Unfortunately, by the next day, a crack appeared in the hull and the forward end began to flood. The salvage effort continued until September 25, by which time approximately half of the cargo had been successfully removed. The salvage effort had to be abandoned when the vessel finally flooded completely." Now, the wreck of the SS Richard Montgomery remains on the sandbank, her masts clearly visible above the water. There are still approximately 1,400 tons of explosives contained within the forward holds - sparking fears it could explode at any time. The government has reassured the public that the risk of a 'major' detonation is 'believed to be remote' - but that monitoring the condition of the wreck is essential. "Surveys are carried out by the MCA on a regular basis to ensure that any changes to the wreck, or its immediate environment, are discovered quickly," the Maritime and Coastguard Agency states. "It is clear from the results of these surveys that the hull is subject to the prevailing environmental conditions and is showing evidence of gradual deterioration. However, the wreck is considered to be in a stable condition." The wreck is under 24-hour radar surveillance and is designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973. An exclusion zone is clearly marked around it, but recent fears emerged after a cargo ship was pictured sailing perilously close to the ticking time bomb. Eastchurch resident James Dewey, who spotted a WEC Lines container ship edging closer to the exclusion zone - marked by buoys, told reports: "It was worrying when I was sitting there looking at doomsday." Officials confirmed the ship did not breach the exclusion zone, but the event still re-sparked interest in the ship's potential to wreak havoc. As previously reported, a 1970 report from the Royal Military College of Science predicted a huge tsunami more than 3,000 metres high would be caused if its payload was to detonate. Nearby Sheerness would also be engulfed in the carnage.
