Logistics affected India during Pro League but there were some positives: assistant coach Shivendra

While most of the Indian men's hockey team players and staff took a break after the disappointing outing in the European leg of the FIH Pro League, assistant coach Shivendra Singh landed straight back at the SAI Centre, Bengaluru. As in-charge of the India-A side on its two-week tour of Europe against the top teams later this week, Shivendra will have a chance to put the lessons learnt to good use. He admitted that the Pro League was a disappointing campaign, but added there were things beyond control that contributed to it. 'We had issues right from the start. The original plan was to be together in Ireland and play three or four practice matches, develop a team plan and then go for the Pro League. But that didn't happen. There were visa issues, five or six players and a staff member landed late directly for the competition. Travelling was staggered, some of them coming after the first couple of matches, and it disturbed the whole planning,' Shivendra told The Hindu. 'We didn't have Lalit (Upadhyay) and Gurjant Singh for the initial games, and we had to rework the entire set-up. It was an unsettled start. It got better towards the end, and that was visible in our performances. So, given everything, it was ok,' he insisted. Injuries didn't help either, with captain Harmanpreet Singh missing matches and Gurjant returning almost immediately. 'Of course, it affects when the leader is not playing three to four matches. Harman got a back injury and was then hit on the finger. He couldn't even hold the stick. We had limited resources, only four or five players in forward and barely any substitutes. Of course, none of it is an excuse, and everyone is disappointed; it was a good chance to qualify for the World Cup. But our focus now is completely on the Asia Cup at home,' he added. Asked about the seven-match losing streak, Shivendra admitted it was a tough one to accept. 'We have to remember that, barring Argentina which surprised us, the rest are top three-four teams in the world. We know expectations are high from this team. Losing consecutive games does affect your confidence. But we try to ensure the pressure does not reach the players because that will only make things worse. We were also trying new ideas in these games, and there were positives,' he said. About the India-A side, the former India striker said the main objective was to create a strong bench for the National side. 'The squad is a mix of seniors and juniors. A new player, even when training with the National team, cannot suddenly jump in for important competitions... he needs to adjust to that level. This tour will give these players an idea of the competition at the top,' he explained.

UP court dismisses case against singer Neha Singh Rathore for posts about Pahalgam attack

A court in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya on Tuesday dismissed a criminal complaint filed against Bhojpuri singer Neha Singh Rathore for her social media posts about the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, Live Law reported. Ekta Singh, additional civil judge (senior division) and Ayodhya additional chief judicial magistrate, said the complaint against Rathore was not maintainable. She added that the complainant, a person named Shivendra Singh, had no locus to file it. Shivendra Singh filed the complaint against the singer under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita section that allows magistrates to take cognisance of offences, according to Live Law. The complaint alleged that Rathore falsely linked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to the Pahalgam attack to incite public unrest and gain electoral advantage. Rathore's 'false and illegal' remarks created nationwide unrest, the complainant alleged, adding that it had pushed the country towards civil war. Shivendra Singh added that the singer's acts amounted to sedition and constituted a cognisable offence. Her remarks also maligned the image of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, said the complainant. On Tuesday, the judge referred to Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Section 222(2), pertaining to prosecution for defamation. Under this section, the sessions court may directly take cognisance of a written complaint filed by a public prosecutor if defamation is alleged to have been committed against the president, vice-president, a Union or state minister, or any public servant with regard to their official conduct. Ekta Singh highlighted a mandate in this legislation, which provides that no complaint can be made by a public prosecutor under sub-section (2) except with a previous sanction from the Centre or a state government, Live Law reported. The court said that in the current case, an instant complaint by Shivendra Singh could not have been filed without obtaining the appropriate sanction, according to Live Law. The court applied a similar reasoning to the allegations in the complaint that Rathore had committed acts falling under Chapter VII of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with offences against the state. Here too, prior sanction was required from the Centre or a state government. Since the complainant had not submitted any document on record to show that the required sanction had been obtained, he did not have the right to file one under the offences, the judge said. Referring to the claims of sedition against Rathore in the complaint, the judge noted that the offence had not been defined under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The closest section to it was Section 152, which also came under Chapter VII, she said, adding that the same reasoning on the requirement of a sanction would then be applied. The terror attack at Baisaran near the town of Pahalgam on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 17 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu.
