In Pakistan, they were doctors, engineers — skilled professionals in highly specialised and challenging jobs. But the country to which they migrated to after religious persecution has no proper system in place to utilise their talents
When Dr Chandra Das fled religious persecution in Sindh and arrived in Jodhpur in 2011, she carried not just hope but a decade of experience as a gynaecologist. What she didn't expect was to be stripped of her professional identity the moment she crossed the border.
An expert at delivering babies and performing surgeries in Pakistan 's public hospitals for 14 years, Das found herself reduced to taking blood pressure readings, collecting samples, and scheduling appointments for Indian doctors. Her medical degree from Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Sindh, was not recognised by Indian authorities. Her purpose and dignity as a doctor was lost.
