Neeru places fourth in Lonato Shotgun World Cup

Neeru Dhanda was a trifle unlucky to miss a medal in women's trap as she was placed fourth in the Shotgun World Cup in Lonato on Saturday. Neeru shot 115 and qualified in sixth place by beating Alessia Iezzi of Italy 2-1 in the shoot-off. After 35 birds in the final, Neeru was tied in the second place with 30, along with the eventual silver and bronze medallists Silvana Stanco of Italy and Lada Denisova, but got eliminated owing to her sixth place in qualification. Silvana had topped qualification, and Denisova was fifth in qualification. It was a very brave effort overall by Neeru in a strong field of 101 shooters. Preeti Rajak did well to shoot 25 in the fifth round and placed eighth, missing qualification by one point. In the men's event, Zoravar Singh Sandhu shot 121, following 24 in the last round. With five shooters vying for the last two berths in the final with that score, Zoravar lost early in the shoot-off. Jaswinder Singh and Lakshay Sheoran shot identical 116 and placed 53rd and 59th respectively. In the RPO section, National champion Shardul Vihan shot 116 and Yugan Muthukumaar 106. The results: Trap: Women: 1. Laetisha Scanlan (Aus) 45 (120); 2. Silvana Stanco (Ita) 43 (121); 3. Lada Denisova (AIN) 34 (116); 4. Neeru Dhanda 30 (115); 8. Preeti Rajak 114; 76. Pragati Dubey 100; RPO: Aashima Ahlawat 114; Nilaa Rajaa Baalu 97.

Zoravar Sandhu stays close to the leading bunch

The experienced Zoravar Singh Sandhu asserted his expertise by shooting a series of 24, 25, 24 for the third-best score of 73 after three rounds of trap in the Shotgun World Cup in Lonato on Friday. With two more rounds of qualification left on Saturday, Zoravar could aspire for a final berth with a strong performance, in a highly competitive field of 183 shooters. In comparison, Lakshay Sheoran (70) and Jaswinder Singh (69) may find it hard to make the cut. Competing in the RPO section, National champion Shardul Vihan shot 72 out of 75. In the women's section, Aashima Ahlawat shot 68 out of 74, but it was in the RPO section. Preeti Rajak (66), Neeru (66) and Pragati Dubey (57) were far from the leading pack in a field of 101 shooters.

It all starts with the SAFF U-19 Championship that will kick off on May 9 in Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh. The tournament will be streamed live on the Sportzworkz YouTube channel. Fernandes has a 100 per cent record at SAFF age-group championships, winning all three tournaments he has led India in (U-15 in 2017 and 2019, and U-17 in 2022). The 48-year-old now not only targets his fourth, but also looks forward to nurturing a strong squad for next year's AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers. 'We all know that the AFC (U20) Qualifiers are the main target, and I've been talking to the boys and trying to raise the bar. We need to do a lot of work with these boys to prepare them for next year. For sure, there will be more of them coming into the camp. This SAFF is a good platform to start preparing for it,' said Fernandes. The Blue Colts begin their campaign in Group B against Sri Lanka on May 9 before taking on Nepal on May 13. Both matches will kick off at 19:30 at the Golden Jubilee Stadium, which also hosted the 2023-24 Santosh Trophy Final Round. - Team Sportstar
