Faridabad: An assistant commandant of Assam Rifles was assaulted after an altercation outside a liquor shop in the city escalated into a brawl when the other group allegedly took offence at being called "Nepali". Police said the incident took place on June 23 near Kirawali village. The paramilitary officer, a resident of Bisrakh (Noida), filed a complaint at Bhopani police station and a case was registered. Two suspects – Mohit (22) and Shubham (22) – were arrested. Five others are absconding. According to the assistant commandant, who is currently posted to Chandel in Manipur, he had gone to a Faridabad farmhouse with his friends to party. We had just bought beer and sat in my car, a Innova, when a group of youths suddenly launched an attack on the vehicle, smashing its windows," the assistant commandant said in his complaint. He said he stepped out of his car and asked the group why they were attacking. "They again attacked me and hurled bricks, stones, rods and other sharp weapons. My friend also got out of the car and they beat him up too," he said. Police said that on questioning the accused, they said they were enraged when the paramilitary officer and his friend gestured towards their group and used the word "Nepali". The group, which was drinking liquor outside the shop, then attacked the duo. "During preliminary questioning, the accused admitted that they were under the influence of alcohol and were provoked by the remark. They then used tiles and other objects to damage the vehicle and assault the victims before fleeing," a Faridabad police spokesperson said on Wednesday. The assistant commandant alleged that the accused also snatched a gold chain he was wearing before escaping on motorcycles, scooters and an i20 car. "I sustained serious head injuries from the assault. These people should be dealt with as per the law," he said. Investigators said Mohit belongs to Satna in Madhya Pradesh and Shubham is from Ayodhya, UP. "Both of them were living in Bhatta Colony in Faridabad's Sector 39. Mohit is employed by a private firm, and Shubham is currently unemployed. They were produced before a local court and sent to judicial custody," the spokesperson said. He added that police are working to identify and arrest the other five attackers who are among the seven charged under BNS sections.

Raipur: Chhattisgarh's Muaythai fighters, Shubham Kumar Nishad and Bhavjyot Singh Kohli, won bronze medals for India at the Senior Asian Muaythai Championship in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam. The championship, held from June 20 to 26, saw a 23-member Indian Muaythai contingent participate. Shubham (U23 years, -51kg), originally from Dallirajhara and now residing in Raipur, and Bhavjyot (U23 years, -75kg) brought laurels to Chhattisgarh with their performances. Bhavjyot's semi-final bout on June 23 was against Ming Hei Yip from Hong Kong. Bhavjyot could not continue due to technical reasons and secured the bronze medal. Similarly, Shubham lost to LJ Rafael Yasay of the Philippines in his U23 years, -51kg semi-final bout under the RSCH rule, securing a bronze medal for India. The Asian Muaythai Championship featured participants from host Vietnam, Nepal, Hong Kong, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Thailand, Mongolia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan, UAE, South Korea, Iraq, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand.

CUTTACK: In a bid to extract money from his parents to invest in online betting, a 22-year-old BTech student allegedly faked his own abduction and tried to get Rs 50,000 from them. The youth, Shubham Samal, was caught hold by police after a two-day intensive search, on Monday. Police said Samal, a resident of Gadasantri within Banarpal police limits in Angul, is pursuing BTech at Silicon Institute of Technology in Bhubaneswar. The cops had began an investigation from Saturday after receiving a complaint from Shubham's elder sister Rupali. As per Rupali, Shubham had come to her residence at OSAP 6th Battalion campus in OMP Square in Cuttack a few days back. She stated that Shubham had called their father up on June 20 alleging he had been kidnapped by three unknown persons from OMP Square and they were demanding Rs 50,000 for his release. Subsequently, his father had also sent the said amount to Shubham via UPI. In the meantime, police had formed a special team and managed to trace Shubham after a two-day search from Madhupatana near Press Chhak area. During interrogation, Shubham confessed to have scripted his own kidnapping to get some money for investing in an online betting application. 'Shubham had left his sister's place on June 20 and went to Press Chhak from where he called his father up alleging he had been kidnapped. He was involved in online betting and wanted to invest more money in the app. Hence, he faked his own abduction,' said a senior police officer adding, Shubham was eventually handed over to his family after being issued a warning not to indulge in such acts in the future.
