Kin arrested for abetment after 3 of family ended life due to debt

1 2 3 Lucknow: Two days after cloth merchant Shobhit Rastogi (48), his wife Shuchita (45), and their 16-year-old daughter died by suicide in their flat in Ashrafabad in Chowk, the police arrested Shuchita's elder sister, Mudita, and her husband, Vivek Siddharth, on charges of abetment to suicide. The arrests came a day after the brother of the deceased trader lodged a complaint alleging that sustained financial harassment by the accused drove his brother, sister-in-law, and teenage niece to end their lives. According to ACP Chowk Raj Kumar Singh, the deceased borrowed around Rs 40 lakh, including from private moneylenders, and handed it over to Mudita and Vivek with the expectation that the amount would be returned following the sale of a family-owned plot in Nepalganj, Nepal. The land was believed to be in Mudita's name. However, a recent trip to Nepal by the couple revealed the land was not registered in Mudita's name, but in the names of her children. Feeling betrayed and financially trapped, Shobhit allegedly saw no way out. On Sunday evening, the businessman handed over his house keys to a relative, citing travel plans. Earlier that day, he closed his Rajajipuram shop early, citing the weather. The next morning, his minor daughter made a distress call to a relative. By the time help arrived, all three family members were found unconscious. Doctors at the trauma centre declared them dead. Police arrested the accused from the Chowk area and confirmed they will be produced in court. A senior officer privy to the probe revealed that a mobile phone recovered from the deceased couple had a recorded video which confirms that they gave money to Mudita and Vivek Siddharth but did not get it back. "This caused them trauma and they took their lives," he said.

She told her aunt they were not in a position to move and asked her to use the flat's spare key with them to enter the house. "The aunt alerted her husband and he soon reached the flat and contacted the police. On entering the flat, they found the three family members lying unconscious. They were rushed to the KGMU Trauma Centre where doctors declared them dead," said DCP West Vishwajeet Srivastava. He added, "Shobhit and his daughter were lying on the bed while Shuchita was on the floor." Police recovered a one-page suicide note written in Hindi allegedly by Suchita which stated that she had taken some money from her parents and they were mounting pressure for her to return it on time. Neighbour Devesh Pandey claimed Shobhit was under a heavy debt and bank representatives often frequented his home. Police suspect that an open cold drink bottle found in the room had been mixed with poison. It has been sent to a forensic lab for testing. Police suspect the suicides were planned as the main door was locked from inside. Shobhit had a cloth shop in Rajajipuram. His two brothers live in Raja Bazaar area of the city. He had given his home's spare key to his brother on Sunday, saying that the family would be going out of town. Shobhit's staff said he appeared cheerful and displayed no signs of distress a day before his death. Neighbours described him as warm, social, and deeply involved in community activities.

She suggested, 'Look for pieces in summer-friendly palettes such as soft pinks, leafy greens, sunny yellows and calming blues to create a light and airy ambiance. Pair bold prints with neutrals to balance the look, or layer similar tones for a more coordinated feel. Accentuate floral textiles with natural elements — think rattan, terracotta and indoor plants.'
