7 new to Max movies to stream in July with 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes

There are a lot of great movies to check out from the list of everything new to HBO Max in July 2025. HBO Max is the best streaming service out there, in no small part due to the great movies it adds to the streaming service every month, and this month is no different. To help you figure out exactly what you need to watch, I've combed through the list and found seven movies that meet the high bar of a 90% or higher "fresh" rating from critics on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. Granted, not every movie with a high rating is guaranteed to be a hit, but it is a useful metric to see which films are beloved by critics and audiences alike. This month's batch includes a pair of new, must-see movies — including "Sinners" — as well as some older films, including Cate Blanchett's incredible performance in "Carol." Here are the seven new to Max movies with a 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes that you need to watch right now. But first, check out one of the best TV deals we've found so far this Prime Day in case your home theater needs an upgrade. I really like the QM6K. Its quantum dot-enhanced Mini-LED panel produces an incredible picture quality that isn't quite on par with OLED, but it's close. It gets even better when you turn on picture settings like Filmmaker mode or Dolby Vision IQ HDR. Trust me — I wrote our TCL QM6K Mini-LED TV review and it's still my go-to TV for watching movies or shows. "Sinners" stars Michael B. Jordan as identical twins Elijah ("Smoke") and Elias ("Stack") Moore. These two have come back to their home of Clarksdale, Mississippi, after years away fighting in World War I and then joining Al Capone's Chicago Outfit. They've come back to start a juke joint for the local Black community, and to get the job done, they've enlisted some help. They've also recruited their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton), a blues performer who goes by the name of "Preacher Boy," to perform at the juke joint's opening night. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Sammie's music is transcendent, inspiring an incredible scene from director Ryan Coogler. But his musical talent catches the ear of a local vampire (Jack O'Connell), and things take a turn when he arrives at the venue looking to join the fun. Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%Watch it now on Max "On Becoming a Guinea Fowl" stars Susan Chardy as Shula, a young Zambian woman. It's billed as a black comedy, but it delves into dark themes such as sexual assault, so don't expect a laugh riot. The movie starts with Shula driving on an empty road one night. While driving, she discovers the body of her uncle Fred (Roy Chisa) lying in the middle of the road. As Shula and her cousins come together for the funeral, it becomes clear that some are grieving more than others. As the grieving process moves along, long-buried secrets come back out into the open. Rotten Tomatoes score: 100%Watch it now on Max "Get Out" stars Daniel Kaluuya as Chris Washington, a young Black photographer living in New York. When he and his white girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), go upstate to visit her parents (Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener), Chris expects some potentially awkward conversations. He's not disappointed on that front, but things truly take a turn into the weird when Rose's mother, Missy, tricks Chris into a hypnosis therapy session. From then on, this turns into a full-blown horror movie, and easily one of the best movies of the past decade. Rotten Tomatoes score: 98%Watch it now on Max "Carol" stars Rooney Mara as Therese Belivet, an aspiring photographer in Manhattan. One day, while working at Frankenberg's department, she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), and Therese is immediately drawn to her. When she realizes Carol has accidentally left her gloves at the store, she even takes the initiative to mail them back to her. Carol sees this initiative and invites Therese to lunch and later to her home, beginning a burgeoning romance. But to say their love is complicated is an understatement. Therese has a boyfriend, Dannie (John Magaro), and Carol is going through a nasty divorce with her husband, Harge (Kyle Chandler), who is trying to obtain proof of her homosexuality to gain sole custody of their daughter. Rotten Tomatoes score: 94%Watch it now on Max "Woman at War" stars Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir as Halla, a choir conductor who engages in eco-activism in her spare time. By eco-activism, I mean using sabotage to disrupt the operation of an aluminum plant in the Icelandic highlands. That life of rebellion becomes complicated, though, when a long-forgotten adoption application for a Ukrainian child becomes approved. Now Halla has to balance avoiding the government and police investigating her crimes while also getting her adoption of this child approved. Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%Watch it now on Max While you might not have heard of this movie, you've undoubtedly heard of Toni Morrison. The acclaimed novelist won a Pulitzer Prize for her novel "Beloved," and eventually became the first Black woman Nobel Prize in Literature. But that's only the tip of the iceberg of the interesting life that she led, starting with her upbringing in a Rust Belt town, to then, eventually, becoming one of the preeminent authors of her time. "Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am" examines this incredible life, and by all accounts is a nearly as incredible documentary. Don't miss it now that it's on Max. Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%Watch it now on Max Spun off from the "Wallace and Gromit" film series, "Shaun the Sheep Movie" stars Justin Fletcher as the voice of Shaun, a mischievous sheep we first met in the 1995 movie "A Close Shave." In this animated adventure, Shaun and his woollen friends spend most of their days tricking the farmer of their flock (John Sparkes) into counting sheep and falling asleep. One day, this plan goes wrong, as the farmer falls asleep in a caravan that goes rogue and makes its way into the city. Upon waking, he has forgotten who he is, but not his sheep shearing skills, and becomes a hair stylist known as Mr. X. Back at the farm, though, the flock and Shaun realize they need the farmer. So they head into to city to find him ... and chaos ensues. Max just added a new award-winning black comedy — and it's a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

"On Becoming a Guinea Fowl" just got added to Max, and it's possible that the streaming service just added the best movie of the year. There's a good chance you haven't heard of this black comedy yet. A co-production between Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Zambia, this movie was a film festival darling that only got a limited release in the U.S. and earned a low $237,397 at the box office. But those who have gotten to see it love it for the most part. It has a perfect 100% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and writer/director Rungano Nyoni won Best Director at the Un Certain Regard competition of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The praise hasn't quite been universal, though. Audiences have only rated it 70% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, though I think I've nailed down the common complaint as to why. So, without further ado, here's what "On Becoming a Guinea Fowl" is about and why this newly added black comedy needs to be the next thing you watch on Max. "On Becoming a Guinea Fowl" stars Susan Chardy as Shula, a young Zambian woman. While driving on an empty road one night, she discovers the body of her uncle Fred (Roy Chisa). This, naturally, begins funeral proceedings, with some more distraught over Fred's passing than others. As Shula and her cousins come together in mourning, though, things take a turn and long-buried secrets come back out into the open. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. As I mentioned already, this movie has been a critical success. It has a 100% "fresh" rating from 92 critical reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and the lowest scored review I saw was a 3/4 from Lisa Trifone of Third Coast Review, who still called it a "deeply affecting" film. I saw more than a few reviews with perfect scores. Our senior TV editor, Michael Desjardin, agrees with the critics as well. He's seen the film and told me it's "Absolutely, positively my favorite film of the year." "Nothing is going to touch it," he added. Audiences, however, were a bit more mixed in their response to the film, though most negative reviews still managed to praise it. Ultimately, this seems to come down to the fact that for a black comedy, this movie simply isn't that funny. Or at least, while humor is used, it's not going to have you in hysterics. While this movie deals with loss, it also deals with shared trauma and sexual assault, so by its very nature, it's going to delve into dark places. But if you can prepare yourself for that, by all accounts, this is an incredible film. It's certainly going to be the next movie I'll be watching on Max. Rams' Chris Shula ranked among worst defensive coordinators in NFL by analyst

Los Angeles' young defense has the pieces, but it's on Shula to put them together. The Los Angeles Rams know that they have blue-chip talent at key spots, intriguing depth, and a defensive coordinator with football royalty in his bloodline. But after a middling showing on defense in 2024, there's one thing they need more than anything in 2025: results. Pro Football Network's Jacob Infante placed Rams DC Chris Shula at No. 26 among all NFL defensive coordinators, signaling both the respect for his upside and the skepticism around what his unit has accomplished so far. Shula's ranking was the fourth-lowest among all NFC defensive coordinators. The 38-year-old grandson of Hall of Famer Don Shula is entering Year 2 as Los Angeles' defensive signal-caller. While last year had its flashes, the numbers told a different story: 26th in total defense, 20th against the pass, and 22nd versus the run. The Los Angeles Rams have some enticing young talents on their roster, but it hasn't all come together for them as a unit on defense yet. Higher expectations should come for Chris Shula in his second year as their defensive coordinator. That production was put to the test after future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald retired following the 2023 season; the Rams possessed the seventh-best defense in the league that year. While no splash moves were made, the Rams didn't stand pat this offseason. The team added proven veteran Poona Ford, a stout interior lineman with over 100 career games under his belt, and sideline-to-sideline linebacker Nate Landman, fresh off a solid stint in Atlanta. They doubled down on front-seven help in the draft, selecting Josiah Stewart (LB), Ty Hamilton (DT), and Chris Paul Jr. (LB), signaling a clear commitment to getting faster and more physical on defense. Now it's on Shula to pull it all together. A year ago, expectations were understandably modest: a new role, a young roster, and a post-Donald transition. This time around? No more grace period. With a year of experience, more pieces, and a clearer identity, 2025 must be a step forward for the Rams' defense to complement its all-in offense. A new A24 movie with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score is coming to streaming this week

In cinephile circles, A24 has become a symbol of quality for a certain kind of movie: edgy, thought-provoking, stylistically bold, yet still broadly accessible. Think Ex Machina, Hereditary, Moonlight and Everything Everywhere All At Once. The studio and film distributor has grown ubiquitous enough to attract some mockery from some corners of the movie world, but it's hard to argue with the success rate. Its run has continued with more recent critical and commercial hits like The Brutalist, Materialists and Friendship. Now, one of the most acclaimed A24 films of the last few months is hitting streaming – and it might be one you haven't even heard of. On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, by director Rungano Nyoni, is a surreal dark comedy set in the filmmaker's home country of Zambia. One night, a woman named Shula (Susan Chardy) comes across a dead body on the side of the road: her uncle's. As funeral preparations commence, the narrative flashes back and forth, revealing the dark secrets of Shula's middle-class family. The film – Nyoni's second, after 2017's I Am Not a Witch – currently holds a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and an 87 rating on Metacritic. Time Out's own review describes the movie as 'thought-provoking' and 'visually arresting'. It's available to stream on HBO Max starting this Friday, July 4. Two more widely seen, if less lauded, A24 releases are also premiering on HBO Max this month. Opus, starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich, arrives July 11. The thriller follows a young journalist (Edebiri) who's invited to a listening party for the new album from an enigmatic pop star turned possible cult leader (Malkovich). Later in the month comes Death of a Unicorn, a horror satire in which a father and daughter (Jason Bateman and Jenna Ortega) accidentally strike and kill the titular mythical beast with their car, incurring the wrath of its parents. The movie hits the streamer on July 25.

'Florida's Death Beach' premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery The numbers are in, and once again, Florida – specifically New Smyrna Beach – has earned the title of "The Shark Attack Capital of the World," accounting for 30% of global shark attacks. JULY 26 'Attack of the Devil Shark' premieres at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery A rogue Tiger Shark attacks and kills a person in St. Martin. Weeks later, it strikes again. Locals fear it could be the work of the legendary Devil Shark – a massive and ruthless tiger shark who's haunted their shores for decades. When a team sets out to track down the shark responsible for the attacks, they uncover a seismic force that may be triggering aggression in sharks. 'Battle for Shark Mountain' premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Off Mozambique's coast, sharks swarm a hidden peak, hunting Giant Trevally in a once-a-year feeding frenzy.
