Truck thefts on the rise in Nagpur as police struggle to control crime wave

Nagpur: A sharp rise in truck thefts has sent shockwaves across the city's trucking community. Drivers are increasingly absconding with valuable consignments, leaving transporters and police grappling with a mounting crisis. The brazen thefts, often involving sophisticated scams and insider collusion, have become a major concern for Nagpur police , who are under pressure to curb the escalating crime incidents highlight the severity of the issue. In March 2025, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Nagpur police's crime branch dismantled an inter-state gang, seizing 16 stolen trucks and arresting five transporters involved in a bogus registration scam. Operation Sindoor 'Our job is to hit target, not to count body bags': Air Marshal Bharti on Op Sindoor Precautionary blackout imposed across parts of Rajasthan, Punjab 'Indian Navy was in position to strike Karachi': Vice Admiral on Operation Sindoor The gang altered chassis and engine numbers, filed fraudulent theft complaints, and re-registered the vehicles in Nagaland before reselling them in Nagpur, causing losses worth crores to banks and report a growing trend of drivers fleeing with consignments, exploiting the trust placed in them. "Drivers are given pickup numbers and load details, making it easy for them to disappear with the cargo," said a transporter from Kamptee, who lost a truckload of electronics goods last month. Industry insiders point to organised crime, with some suggesting insider leaks at warehouses or trucking firms. The lack of stringent identity checks at loading points exacerbates the problem, as seen in cases where thieves pose as legitimate drivers to collect police have intensified their efforts, with the crime branch cracking five vehicle theft cases in August 2024, recovering goods worth Rs 1.5 lakh. However, the scale of the problem overwhelms current measures. A 2020 incident, where a history-sheeter stole a truck from Lakadganj police station, underscores the audacity of these criminals. The special branch, led by DCP Shweta Khedkar, has been pivotal in gathering intelligence for major events but has yet to effectively curb this rising are now demanding increased police patrolling at transport hubs like Wadi and Pardi, along with stricter regulations for driver verification. The city's hit-and-run epidemic, with 45% of accidents involving fleeing drivers, further complicates the law enforcement landscape, as police resources are stretched truckers face financial ruin and supply chains falter, Nagpur police are under scrutiny to restore order. Commissioner Ravinder Singal has assured a robust response, including enhanced surveillance and collaboration with regional transport authorities. For now, Nagpur's truckers remain on the edge, hoping for swift action to secure their livelihoods and the city's logistics lifeline. Fate of 13 Pakistani nationals yet to be decided, cops waiting for reply

Nagpur: The speculation around 13 Pakistani nationals , whose status of Long Term Visa (LTV) is in progress, is still lingering as the city police's query on their exit before the central govt is yet to be clarified. With one more day remaining for the final exit deadline on Tuesday, the city police are still waiting for clarification. The deck for exit was cleared for three persons, said an official. The guidelines for the exit, which exempted those staying with LTVs, did not clarify regarding a bulk of the Pakistani nationals whose applications for similar permits are pending before the authorities. "Until there is clarity on the status of persons whose LTVs are in progress, we cannot decide on their exit as it is a sensitive issue with international repercussions," said an official. He added that CP Ravinder Singal and DCP (special branch) Shweta Khedkar are meticulously following the protocol and the guidelines issued to ensure there is no injustice done to anyone, irrespective of their citizenship. Though there is a strong sentiment against the Pakistani nationals, the cops are keen to ensure no decision is taken in haste. "We will ensure all the documentation work is completed with due formalities," said a senior cop. With the Pahalgam attack still fresh in mind, the cops have also stepped up surveillance across the city, and certain venues and institutions have been kept under strict security.

The ministry of external affairs and the home affairs ministry have asked the state govt to ensure that Pakistanis with cancelled visas leave before April 27. "They are under vigil to prevent them from going underground," said the Nagpur CP, adding that international protocol for valid visa holders would be strictly adhered to. Special branch officials under Nagpur deputy commissioner of police Shweta Khedkar worked to accumulate and screen the names and visa status of the Pakistani nationals. The list was sent to the office of the state director general of police after Fadnavis's instructions reached police units across the state. Sources stated the Pakistani nationals in Nagpur, who were identified for exit, are based in Jaripatka locality. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to officials, Pakistani nationals who are on casual visits to their relatives for any family programme or festivities and for any special occasions would have to leave India. "We already have contact details and information of relatives and guarantors of the Pakistani nationals. Any attempt to go underground would be dealt with an iron hand. Co-operation with the police department is expected from relatives and those whose names have been earmarked for deportation," an official said.
