Cubs trade idea brings $63 million starting pitcher to Chicago
The Chicago Cubs have let the Milwaukee Brewers claw back into the National League Central race. The Cubs' starting rotation could use some upgrades if they want to ensure a division title. Justin Steele will not return this season after undergoing season-ending elbow surgery. Shōta Imanaga and Matthew Boyd have pitched great, but the Cubs could use some reliable arms behind them. With the trade deadline approaching, the Cubs could find some talent to add to the mix. While the Cubs could target a rental, they may opt to give up more to add a controllable piece to their rotation. FanSided's Aldo Soto suggested the Cubs could target Edward Cabrera of the Miami Marlins. He is under club control through 2028. "Cabrera had a rough outing his last time out against the Baltimore Orioles as the righty allowed four earned runs in four innings of work," wrote Soto. "Yet, the 27-year-old was still able to flash his plus stuff, striking out six and walking none. Cabrera has a 3.61 ERA in 16 starts this year and had an 11-start stretch from May through early July, when he posted a 2.11 ERA with a 25.3 K% and 8.0 BB% in 59.2 innings." Cabrera is projected to earn a five-year, $63 million deal when he hits free agency. The biggest hurdle in trying to trade for him will be the fact that the Marlins could hold out for a bigger offer next season. However, this is the healthiest he's been, and the Marlins could try to cash in now if they feel he will be unable to maintain this level of health."The Marlins can always hold out for a bigger trade package, considering Cabrera still has three more years of arbitration left before he reaches free agency. That's certainly a plus for any team pursuing Cabrera, cheap, under control through 2028, and he's finally putting things together. However, his price could be hurt by the fact that Cabrera has not pitched more than 100 innings in any single season during his MLB career." More MLB:

They concluded a home series June 22 with a 14-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners after winning the first two games in the series. The Cubs will travel to St. Louis to begin a three-game series against the Cardinals beginning June 23. Advertisement Note: Standings reset for all minor league affiliates at the conclusion of last week's series. IOWA CUBS (Triple-A affiliate in Des Moines): The Iowa Cubs are coming off a series loss on the road against the Nashville Sounds this week (two wins, four losses). Cubs pitcher Shōta Imanaga made a successful rehab start this week. Imanaga threw 4 1/3 shutout innings June 20, striking out eight and walking two while allowing just two hits and no runs. The Cubs expect Imanaga back in their lineup this week. SOUTH BEND CUBS (High-A affiliate in South Bend, Indiana): The South Bend Cubs are coming off a series loss to the Lake County Captains (three losses, two wins). On June 22, the Cubs' No. 10 prospect, Cristian Hernandez, hit a two-run homer. It was his first since April 23, showing positive signs for the young player. MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS (Single-A affiliate in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina): The Pelicans won their recent series four games to two, including a walk-off, extra-innings victory June 21. Knoxville Smokies' last series The Knoxville Smokies concluded the first half of their season with a record of 32-36, placing them third in the Southern League North Division. They showed flashes of strong play, highlighted by a recent combined no-hitter against the Columbus Clingstones on June 14 from pitchers Jaxon Wiggins, Sam Armstrong and A.J. Puckett. The Smokies went an even 6-6 on the road the last two weeks. Advertisement The minor league baseball season is divided into two halves. This split-season format is designed to provide more opportunities for teams to contend for a playoff spot. The winner of the first half automatically qualifies for the postseason. The Chattanooga Lookouts finished atop the Southern League standings June 22, with the Smokies in third place. If a team wins both halves, the next best overall record in the division for the second half will earn the second playoff spot. This system allows for player development and promotions to happen without derailing a team's postseason aspirations. Southern League North Standings as of June 21, 2025: Chattanooga Lookouts: 38-28 (.576) Birmingham Barons: 38-31 (.551), 1.5 GB Knoxville Smokies: 32-36 (.471), 7 GB Rocket City Trash Pandas: 24-44 (.353), 15 GB Smokies returning to Covenant Health Park The Smokies return home to Covenant Health Park this week to host the Birmingham Barons for a six-game series June 24-29. BCB After Dark: Schedule blues
Photo by Daniel Shirey/MLB Photos via Getty Images Welcome back to BCB After Dark: the grooviest gathering of night owls, early risers, new parents and Cubs fans abroad. For the first time this week, there's no game happening right after we go live, and we won't have another early-morning game for a few years at least. But come on in and join us anyway. There's no cover charge. The hostess will seat you shortly. Bring your own beverage. BCB After Dark is the place for you to talk baseball, music, movies, or anything else you need to get off your chest, as long as it is within the rules of the site. The late-nighters are encouraged to get the party started, but everyone else is invited to join in as you wake up the next morning and into the afternoon. Advertisement Yesterday I asked if you Shōta Imanaga should have stayed in the game past the fourth inning in the season opener. The vote was close, but 53 percent of you thought it was the right move to pull Imanaga when Counsell did. The other 47 percent thought he should have stayed in at least one more inning. Here's the part where we listen to music and talk movies. You can skip that if you want. You won't hurt my feelings. Tonight we're featuring a performance from 1983 featuring trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker with saxophonist Stan Getz. This is 'Just Friends.' In honor of the Cubs' trip to Japan, I thought I'd ask you to tell us about your favorite Japanese films. I'm going to define 'Japanese' films loosely, so it can either be your favorite film from Japanese creators, such as a Toshiro Mifune picture, Godzilla or a Studio Ghibli movie. Or it can just be a film set in Japan, such as Hiroshima mon amour, which is a terrific French film that I keep meaning to write about here but every time I try to re-watch it, I get stuck on the first 20 minutes of footage of atomic bomb victims. But Hiroshima mon amour is the kind of French New Wave film that makes you think these guys and gals were utter geniuses or just plain nuts. (I tend towards genius.) Advertisement So tell us your favorite Japanese films—either made by the Japanese or set in Japan. Welcome back to everyone who skips the music and movies. There wasn't a good photo of the Cubs schedule—I suppose I could have screenshotted one—but that Pikachu photo was too good to pass us. So this has been floating around the internet the past few days. I hope you can read that, because it ranks the projected difficulty of schedule for each MLB team for the year and for each month. As you can see, the Cubs have a projected below-average difficult schedule for the entire season—23rd hardest out of 30 teams. On the other hand, and this has been mentioned many times around here and even on the Cubs' broadcasts, the Cubs' first month of the season is brutal. The projected record of Cubs' opponents in March and April is .546. Only one team has a single month within .010 of that winning percentage. Advertisement After that, things get a lot easier. The Cubs have the easiest schedule in the game of any month in May and no other team is within .010 opponents projected winning percentage. The Cubs play 30 games in March and April and they're already 0-2. Coming up, the schedule for the rest of the month is: 3 @ Arizona 3 @ Sacramento 3 San Diego 3 Texas 3 @ Dodgers 3 @ San Diego 3 Arizona 2 Dodgers 3 Phillies 2 @ Pirates So at what win total on May 1 do you start to panic? I know Jim Deshaies said on the Marquee broadcast that if the Cubs go .500 through the end of April, they'll be in good shape the rest of the year. But do you agree? If the Cubs are 13 and 17 at the end of April, do you think the season is in trouble? Advertisement Remember, games in March and April count the same as ones in September. If the Cubs fall too far behind, they might not be able to catch up. Thank you for stopping by this week. It's been an unusual week for all of us around here and we're glad you came around for the ride. Please get home safely. Recycle any cans and bottles. Tip your waitstaff. And join Sara Sanchez tomorrow night for more BCB AFter Dark. More from
