Youths claim trial to assaulting basketball spectator in Siburan

KUCHING (July 4): Two youths claimed trial in the Magistrates' Court here today to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a basketball game spectator in Siburan on June 28.
Sia Ming Hui, 21, and a 17-year-old male were charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same Code.
The Section provides for a prison sentence of up to 10 years, or a fine, or caning, or any two of these punishments, upon conviction.
According to the charges, both youths allegedly beat up the victim at around 9pm at a basketball court in Siburan.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan ordered both accused to be released on a cash bail of RM2,500 each with one local surety.
He also fixed Aug 15, 2025 for pre-trial case management.
Insp Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while both accused were represented by counsel Lim Lian Kee.
The incident occurred during a basketball tournament, when several unauthorised individuals forcefully entered the court and assaulted a spectator.
Organiser Siburan Basketball Club stated the incident did not involve any players, team members, referees, or members of the organising committee.
