'Side Show: The Musical' dares audiences to see the people behind the spectacle
Step into the world of freaks, where the misunderstood take center stage, and the strange is nothing short of spectacular. This July, The Sandbox Collective invites audiences to confront their curiosities and their compassion as it brings the Tony-nominated Broadway gem 'Side Show: The Musical' to the Philippine stage. Based on the true story of conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton, "Side Show" follows the sisters' journey from carnival attractions to vaudeville stars in 1930s America. Beneath the circus lights and public fascination lies a deeply human tale of love, longing, and the pursuit of identity. Full-circle moment For director Toff De Venecia, "Side Show" is more than a programming decision. It's his return to his artistic roots. 'This show is special to me,' De Venecia said during a press conference. 'It was the first production I ever directed on my own.' He first staged the musical in 2010 following his co-directorial debut with "All Shook Up," and later helmed Sandbox's 2023 hit "Little Shop of Horrors." The idea to bring "Side Show" back came unexpectedly during the recent run of "Next to Normal," when a backstage moment reignited his connection to the show. 'It feels like a full-circle moment,' he added. Beyond the spectacle Though wrapped in vintage circus flair — complete with eccentric characters and glitzy performances — "Side Show" is ultimately a poignant exploration of what it means to be different in a world obsessed with sameness. Bound by birth but divergent in dreams, Daisy and Violet confront the pressures of fame, love, and the aching desire for autonomy. 'Like everyone else,' they sing — a haunting refrain that cuts through the makeup and the spotlight. The show doesn't ask audiences to stare at 'freaks.' It dares them to truly see the people beneath the label. Stellar cast Alternating as the Hilton twins are Tanya Manalang, Marynor Madamesila, Krystal Kane, and Molly Langley, four formidable performers bringing distinct energy and vocal depth to the demanding dual roles. Joining them is Jon Santos as The Boss, the manipulative ringmaster, along with two sets of alternating male leads: Reb Atadero and CJ Navato as Terry Connor, and Vien King and Tim Pavino as Buddy Foster. Marvin Ong and Joshua Cabiladas share the role of Jake, the twins' loyal protector. A dynamic ensemble rounds out the cast, portraying the carnival's 'curiosities,' characters that add both heart and theatrical wonder to every scene. Timely, resonant, unmissable As society continues to navigate the politics of identity and difference, "Side Show" feels more relevant than ever. It shines a light on exploitation, longing, and resilience — themes that echo far beyond the big top. Jon Santos returns to stage with 'Bawat Bonggang Bagay' and 'Side Show'
This Pride Month, Filipino theater icon Jon Santos is making a triumphant return to the stage in "Bawat Bonggang Bagay." As if that's not enough, he will quickly up the ante in July with "Side Show: The Musical," presented by The Sandbox Collective at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Black Box Theater in Circuit Makati. "Bawat Bonggang Bagay" (BBB) returns for a strictly limited engagement from June 14 to June 22, 2025. The Filipino adaptation of Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe's acclaimed "Every Brilliant Thing," "BBB" is translated into Filipino by Guelan Luarca, under the direction of Jenny Jamora, who won Outstanding Stage Direction at the 12th Gawad Buhay Awards for her work on the piece. Turning mental health advocacy into a raw and moving theatrical experience, the play follows a child who begins writing a list of all the brilliant things in life to help their mother through depression. It's an earnest, participatory piece that finds humor and healing in the darkest moments, with audiences invited to literally become part of the story. Side Show: The Musical From heartfelt monologue to vaudeville spectacle, Santos pivots into a bold new role in July as "Side Show: The Musical" hits the stage beginning July 26. Here, he stars as 'The Boss,' the charismatic ringmaster, who introduces audiences to the world of the so-called 'freaks'—centered on the extraordinary lives of conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton. Set in 1930s America, "Side Show" is a fictionalized musical account of the real-life Hilton sisters who rose to fame in the vaudeville circuit. Behind the bright lights and applause lies a story of sisterhood, selfhood, and the search for love and acceptance—a fitting narrative for the month that celebrates queerness, uniqueness, and chosen family. Directed by Toff de Venecia, "Side Show" marks another daring chapter for The Sandbox Collective, which previously mounted acclaimed productions like "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Next to Normal." "Side Show" boasts a stellar artistic team, with Ejay Yatco as musical director, JM Cabling as choreographer, Mark Dalacat pulling double duty as assistant director and set designer, Gabo Tolentino (lighting design), and Carlos Siongco (costume design). Though full casting and ticketing details have yet to be announced, Jon Santos' role alone is enough to generate excitement. As 'The Boss,' he's expected to bring his signature flair to the stage, lacing grandeur with empathy and showmanship. This double billing of BBB and "Side Show" beginning Pride Month is more than theatrical programming. It's a cultural moment. The Philippine Ballet Theatre is set to stage ‘Maria Makiling' this July
Sharing the spotlight in the titular role of Maria Makiling are Gabby Jaynario and Jessa Tangalin, who each bring their own unique voice and energy to the stage. Audiences can expect distinct portrayals between the two—promising to highlight Maria's strength and vulnerability on a personal level. Playing the role of Maria's love interest, Juan, are Matthew Davo and Justine Orande. We've seen the two in previous PBT shows such as Sarimanok and The Nutcracker , so it's exciting to see their fresh takes on the different emotional sides to Juan's romantic yet heartbreaking journey.
