Major drug bust in Durban: Hawks seize R350,000 in cannabis and narcotics

Image: Supplied A 43-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Friday, after a clandestine cannabis laboratory was dismantled during a high-impact operation near Morningside, Durban. The suspect was arrested on Thursday during a joint operation between members of the Hawks' Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, the Durban Metro Police Drug Team, the Metro K9 Unit, Durban Flying Squad, and the eThekwini Infrastructure Task Team. Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo says police acted on intelligence that pointed to an indoor cannabis cultivation setup in the area. 'A disruptive operation was swiftly conducted, and they proceeded to the said building,' he confirmed. 'During the search, police found indoor cannabis plants, ecstasy tablets, crack cocaine, chemicals and equipment to the street value of approximately R350 000.00,' Mhlongo added. Pietermaritzburg businesswoman accused of defrauding Covid-19 TERS of R4 million

File A Pietermaritzburg businesswoman has been arrrested for allegedly defrauding the Covid-19 Temporary Employee Relief Scheme. Almost three years after a Pietermaritzburg businesswoman allegedly defrauded the Covid-19 Temporary Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) of millions, she made her first appearance in court this week. Sindisiwe Mdluli-Myeza was arrested on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, by the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (known as the Hawks) on charges of fraud and money laundering. According to Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, it is alleged that during the period between November 2020 and October 2022, Mdluli-Myeza applied for the Covid-19 relief fund from the Department of Employment and Labour. "She claimed R4,229,044.61 from the Temporary Employee Relief Scheme. Preliminary investigation revealed that no employees were employed by her company, and the company was not entitled to claim."

Hawks have launched a full-scale investigation into a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that took place on Friday in the vicinity of the Mqobokazi in Hluhluwe. Reports indicate that CIT guards were driving on R22 from Emanguzi to Richards Bay when they were attacked by unknown suspects who fired shots at the armoured vehicle until it stopped.
