Bumrah, Archer shine in Lord's melting pot
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LONDON - Fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer took centre stage on the second day of the third test as India and England traded blows at Lord's on Friday and the match remained on a knife-edge. India's Bumrah produced a devastating spell in the morning, dismissing Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Chris Woakes before Archer struck with his third delivery to remove Yashasvi Jaiswal in his first test for four years. India ended the day on 145-3 in reply to England's 387, the game evenly poised with both sides bidding to go 2-1 up in the five-match series. Earlier, Bumrah reduced England to 271-7 in two fiery overs, bowling Stokes for 44 and Root for 104 before dismissing Woakes first ball. Root, 99 not out overnight, had completed his century off the first ball of the day, flashing hard at Bumrah and leaping in the air as it flew past gully to the third man boundary. The right-hander raised his bat as he received a standing ovation from the crowd, his 37th test hundred another masterful display from England's highest test run scorer of all time. Stokes had a scare when he attempted a quick single and was well short of the crease when Jaiswal's throw narrowly missed the stumps. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Woakes nicked a catch to stand-in wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel to put Bumrah on a hat-trick, but Brydon Carse played a solid defensive stroke to deny him. SMITH 50 Jamie Smith continued his fine form with crisp strokes around the ground to lift England past 300 and he reached his 50 just before lunch. Smith's innings of 51 ended early in the afternoon session when he edged Mohammed Siraj to Jurel, ending a valuable eighth-wicket partnership of 84. Archer was comprehensively bowled by Bumrah, who finished with impressive figures of 5-74, but Carse reached his maiden test fifty before being bowled by Siraj for 56 to end the innings. After a wayward first over by Woakes costing 13 runs, Archer took the ball. His third delivery, timed at 90 miles per hour, clipped the edge of Jaiswal's bat and flew to second slip where Harry Brook pouched a sharp catch. Archer wheeled away in delight before being mobbed by his team mates, the relief on his face evident after a succession of injury problems had threatened his career. KL Rahul and Karun Nair defended staunchly in a second-wicket partnership of 61 and were starting to score more freely when Nair, on 40, edged Stokes to Root at first slip and he took an excellent low one-handed catch. Nair reviewed the decision, which was confirmed, and India captain Shubman Gill arrived at the crease fresh from scoring 430 runs in the last test at Edgbaston. He had made only 16, however, when he edged an outswinger to wicketkeeper Smith off Woakes before trudging back to the pavilion. Rahul reached his fifty from 97 balls, another solid knock by the India opener who was 53 not at the close, and Rishabh Pant played a couple of trademark unorthodox strikes in his unbeaten 19. Spanish court orders cleanup of Galician pig farm pollution in landmark ruling
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox MADRID - The top court in Spain's northwestern Galicia region has ordered that authorities stamp out pollution linked to intensive pig farming in a landmark case highlighting decades-long environmental mismanagement, a court document showed on Friday. Spain, Europe's largest pork producer, houses about a third of its pig farms in Galicia. The court found that for some 20,000 residents of the A Limia area, the fundamental right to living in a healthy environment had been violated. The ruling, condemning both state and regional authorities, marks the first time a European court has addressed the impact of large-scale livestock farming on water sources and residents' human rights, according to environmental groups ClientEarth and Friends of the Earth Spain, which supported the case. It could pave the way for other communities suffering from similar issues to demand justice and protection from authorities, campaigners say. A Limia residents say life has become "unfeasible" due to the proliferation of intensive pig and poultry farms, which brought unbearable odours and contamination from chemicals such as nitrates that seeped into groundwater and water reservoirs. The court stated that regional authorities and the national body overseeing water management failed to act despite legal obligations and awareness of the issues. Government and regional officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The ruling can be appealed at Spain's Supreme Court. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. The ruling also mandates authorities to ensure clean and safe drinking water free of harmful microorganisms and chemical substances. "Now the authorities have to take action," Pablo Alvarez Veloso, head of the neighbours' association in the As Conchas reservoir area, told Reuters. REUTERS

Carlos Alcaraz beats Taylor Fritz to reach third successive Wimbledon final
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LONDON – Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz tamed the towering Taylor Fritz to reach his third straight Wimbledon final, rediscovering his A-game when it mattered most to battle past the American in a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory on July 11. Eyeing a sixth Grand Slam title, the Spaniard was eventually too strong for the metronomically consistent Fritz, whose biggest weapons were still not damaging enough to unsettle the second seed under a fiery sun on Centre Court. 'I am not thinking about the winning streak or results. Thinking about how this is my dream... that's why I try to bring the joy to the court,' said Alcaraz. Alcaraz's victory set the stage for a tantalising final against either world No. 1 Jannik Sinner or 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic, who will duel it out in the second semi-final – the result of which was not available at press time. 'This is one of the most exciting matchups we have on tour right now. Djokovic against Jannik. As a huge fan of tennis, I'm gonna try to see it and watch as much as I can,' Alcaraz added. Alcaraz has beaten Djokovic in the past two Wimbledon finals and holds an 8-4 edge over Sinner in their 12 meetings. Back to his best after an inconsistent start to the tournament, the world No. 2 looks in the mood to extend his reign at the All England Club. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. That blistering run has brought him an epic French Open final triumph against Sinner and titles in Rome, Monte Carlo and at Queen's Club. He has won 35 of his 38 matches on grass, a golden spell including 20 successive victories at Wimbledon since losing to Sinner in the fourth round in 2022. He is also the second Spanish man to reach the Wimbledon final on three occasions, after five-time finalist Rafael Nadal. Alcaraz is now one win away from becoming the fifth man in the Open era to clinch three consecutive Wimbledon titles after Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Djokovic. Earlier on July 10, Aryna Sabalenka took a swipe at Amanda Anisimova over her behaviour during the American's stunning semi-final victory. The world No. 1 Belarusian crashed to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 defeat against the 13th seed to shatter her dream of reaching a first All England Club final. She lost her cool with Anisimova during the match and was still angry with her rival several hours later. Two incidents infuriated the 27-year-old, who was unhappy Anisimova celebrated winning a point too early. 'I was just trying to chase the ball. She was already celebrating it. I mean, that's a bit too early. Then she kind of pissed me off saying that's what she does all the time,' Sabalenka said. She was also irked that Anisimova failed to follow the tennis tradition of offering an apology when she won a point thanks to a fortunate deflection off the net. Ironically, Sabalenka's rant came after she had opened her post-match press conference by telling reporters she would not repeat her French Open final outburst. She was forced to apologise after claiming it was her poor play and not Coco Gauff's performance that was the decisive factor in the American's victory at Paris last month. AFP, REUTERS
