Cong threatens mass protest over OBC quota implementation delay

Bhopal: The Congress on Saturday warned of a statewide agitation if the BJP govt in the state fails to implement 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) without further delay. Congress state unit president Jitu Patwari and LoP Umang Singhar, addressing a joint press conference, said the party would launch protests, rallies and public awareness drives across the state in support of the backward classes. "The BJP's anti-OBC face has been exposed, the Congress will fight till the end," Patwari said. "The BJP govt has crossed all limits of fraud, betrayal and shameful injustice with the OBC community. The state govt is also tampering with the basic structure of the Constitution to prevent the OBC class from getting its rights. Disregarding the repeated, clear and strict instructions of the Supreme Court, the BJP govt is depriving the OBC brothers and sisters of their constitutional right of 27% reservation. This is the most disgusting and cruel face of the anti-OBC mentality, which is killing democracy, constitution and social justice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? LOP Singhar said on Friday, the Supreme Court reprimanded the MP govt in the hearing of OBC reservation case. "The court expressed strong displeasure over the failures, inaction and procrastination of the govt," the LOP said. "The chief secretary was ordered to file an affidavit, in which it has to be clarified what obstacles are coming in the appointments to 13% posts that have currently been put on hold," he said. In 2019, the erstwhile Kamal Nath govt increased reservation for OBCs from 14% to 27% taking total reservations quota to 63%. Patwari said: "The Madhya Pradesh govt makes excuses of those petitions which were filed against the ordinance, whose hearing is pending in the Supreme Court." The Congress leaders said on 25 June, the Supreme Court asked the state govt that when there is no legal obstacle, why is 27% reservation not being implemented? "Still, the BJP govt is engaged in carrying out its anti-OBC conspiracy," Patwari said. Singhar said the Congress demands 27% OBC reservation should be implemented immediately. He said the appointments of OBC candidates selected in the recruitments which were stopped by the govt, should be restored immediately or else the Congress will start its state-wide protests.

BJP govt evicting tribals from their land, denying their rights: Cong

Bhopal: In a joint press conference, LOP Umang Singhar, former Union Minister Arun Yadav, and Congress Working Committee member Kamleshwar Patel stated that tribals in the state are being denied their rights to water, forests, and land by the BJP govt. The Congress functionaries said that, in gross injustice, tribals are being evicted from their land and suppressed with false allegations. The Congress cautioned that if the rights of tribals are not enforced within 15 days, the party will start a mass movement against the BJP govt. Calling the policies of the govt anti-tribal, the three senior leaders said that the BJP has deviated from the issues of development and is now engaging only in the politics of religion. LOP Umang Singhar alleged that the govt is depriving tribals of their traditional rights. "The land leases of thousands of tribal families were cancelled without any prior notice. It is clear from this action of the govt that it wants to snatch the rights of the tribals to water, forest, and land," LOP Singhar said. He also mentioned that in Madhya Pradesh, only five leases were given in Jhabua district so far, which shows that the govt's intention is not to give the tribals their rights but to drive them out of their homes and forests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The LOP said that tribals talk about water, forest, and land, but the community is being divided into religions. "Tribals worship nature. Our identity is not with religion but with land and forest. The BJP RSS is going from village to village and dividing us because when BJP talks, it talks only about religion," Singhar alleged. "If the govt does not accept the tribals' demands for lease within 15 days, then a fierce movement will be launched. " Umang Singhar claimed that it was 17 years since the Forest Rights Act (2006) came into force, but the BJP govt has not yet given lakhs of tribal families their legal right to ownership of forest land. "More than eight lakh forest rights claims are still pending across the country. This shows that the govt failed miserably in the proper implementation of the Forest Rights Act 2006," Singhar said. He further argued that the Madhya Pradesh govt rejected more than 3 lakh claims out of 6.5 lakh forest rights claims made by tribals till 2024 without citing any clear reason. Quoting the Forest Rights Rules 2007, the LOP said that Rule 12A (6) states that it is mandatory for the govt to give reasons in writing for rejecting a claim. The Forest Rights Rules, 2007; Rule 12A says, "In the event of rejection or modification of a claim, the reasons for the same must be told in writing in the local language to the person concerned." The LOP alleged that due to the abundance of mineral wealth in the forests of Nepanagar, the govt wants to forcibly displace the tribals there, so that the way can be cleared for private companies. "The govt is falsely accusing the tribals of cutting the trees, while the truth is that they are protecting the forests and planting trees there. There are some other elements that are harming the forests, which the govt is ignoring," Singhar argued. Former Union Minister Arun Yadav said that the govt is removing tribals from the Nepanagar forests even though these tribals were engaged in forest protection. He accused that this is a trick of the govt because it wants to serve corporate interests by evicting the tribals from the forests. Giving the Mohan Yadav govt 15 days, the Congress leaders made it clear that if within this period the tribal society members do not get their rights back, then the Congress party will start a mass movement, and the fight for the rights of the tribals will be fought from the streets to the state assembly.

Ahead of PM's visit, MP LoP Umang Singhar questions govt on women welfare, demands answers on key schemes

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], May 30 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Congress MLA Umang Singhar on Friday raised a series of pointed questions ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bhopal, where he would address a women-centric program on Devi Ahilyabai Holkar's 300th birth anniversary. Speaking to ANI, Singhar said, 'PM Modi is coming to talk about women empowerment, but I want to ask him directly--will Ladli Behans actually receive Rs 3,000 under the Ladli Behna Yojana? Will self-help groups (SHGs) of women, who do not have employment and are running only on paper, receive any real financial assistance? Will they be connected to livelihood? PM Modi should tell us.' Singhar also criticised the BJP, accusing it of prioritising image-building over substance. 'Why has the government stopped providing benefits under the Ujjwala Yojana? Will the cylinders, which are kept empty, be refilled again? Will inflation be reduced in the state and the nation? We see there is a shortage of urea. Will Madhya Pradesh get urea? Will the income of farmers double? What support will farmers and small businesses receive through MSMEs in Madhya Pradesh? Your government has also reduced funds allocated to MGNREGA and tribal welfare schemes. Today, the BJP has become a party focused only on advertisements. It has become a party above public sentiment,' the Congress leader said. The Congress leader further alleged that the BJP government has disrespected women. 'A female army officer was insulted (referring to MP minister Vijay Shah's remark against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi), who is a daughter of Madhya Pradesh. Will PM Modi ask for Vijay Shah's resignation? I think PM Modi talks about something in the Mann ki Baat program, but has something else in his inner heart,' he added. PM Modi will address the 'Women Empowerment Maha Sammelan' program at Jamboree Ground in Bhopal on May 31. The event, centered on women, is expected to witness the participation of around two lakh women from across the state. (ANI)

MP LoP Umang Singhar welcomes SC's direction on Vijay Shah

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], May 19 (ANI): Leader of Opposition of Madhya Pradesh assembly and Congress leader Umang Singhar on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court direction on state cabinet minister Kunwar Vijay Shah's matter regarding his objection remarks against Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had briefed the media about Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. On Monday, the Supreme Court slammed MP Minister Shah for his remarks against Army officer Colonel Qureshi, saying that the Court was not ready to accept the minister's apology. The Supreme Court has constituted an SIT comprising three senior IPS officers to investigate Shah's remarks, including a woman officer from outside Madhya Pradesh, to probe Minister Shah's comments regarding the Army officer. Addressing the media persons in Bhopal, Singhar said, 'I welcome the decision of the Supreme Court. I can say that it is a move of the Apex Court in the army's honour. But the Bharatiya Janata Party government, be it the central government or the state government, did not wake up; the Court did, but they didn't. The Supreme Court said that the minister's remark is not worthy of apology, but the BJP feels that it is worthy of apology, and that is why the state government hasn't asked for the resignation of the minister yet.' Shah's arrest is conditional, pending investigation cooperation, with the SIT set to submit its report by May 28. He further highlighted, 'If the BJP considers the Top Court's order or comment serious, then Minister Vijay Shah should be immediately sacked and action taken against him.' The BJP government's response to the incident has been questioned, with Singhar alleging that the party seems to support Shah's actions. The Congress leader stressed that the party would continue protesting until Shah is dismissed. 'I think that the BJP has become so arrogant that they neither want to listen to the media nor public sentiment, nor want to pay attention to the insult to the army. It is clear that the Court intervenes in such decisions whenever the government does not pay attention to such matters...I can say that if the government wants then they can make his resignation and also make his immediate arrest,' Singhar said. 'If a case is registered against a common man, the police immediately detain their family members. So, I think there is silent support from CM Mohan Yadav and the BJP with Minister Vijay Shah. It is definitely a shameful incident for the state,' he added. Additionally, he stressed that the Congress party would keep protesting and raising its voice until Minister Vijay Shah is dismissed. During the hearing on Monday, the Apex Court said, 'You are a public figure. A seasoned politician. You should weigh your words when you speak. We should display your video here... This is an important issue for the armed Forces. We need to be very responsible.' Advocate Varun Thakur told ANI, 'The Supreme Court has passed a historical order today and constituted an SIT regarding the Vijay Shah matter... SIT will submit the probe report to the Supreme Court before 28th May. The arrest of Vijay Shah is conditional; it won't happen until May 28 if he cooperates with the investigation. The Supreme Court rejected his apology...'. (ANI)

Vijay Shah remark row: Congress protests outside Raj Bhavan demanding dismissal of M.P. Minister

The Congress on Friday (May 16, 2025) protested outside the Raj Bhavan in Bhopal demanding the dismissal of Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah over his recent inflammatory remarks on Colonel Sofiya Qureshi even as top BJP leaders maintained that the party will follow court orders in the matter. A delegation of more than 15 Congress MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, called on Governor Mangubhai Patel to give him a memorandum and press for their demands. Later, the MLAs in black attires staged a demonstration outside the Governor's House. An FIR was filed against Mr. Shah late on May 14 for allegedly calling Colonel Qureshi 'sister of the terrorists' of Pahalgam attack, after the Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo moto cognizance of the matter. The court set a four-hour deadline and specified the sections under which the Tribal Affairs Minister was to be booked. However, the next day, the High Court expressed its dissatisfaction over the contents of the FIR. It said the report did not mention Mr. Shah's May 12 speech which was an evidence, and added that it would monitor the investigation. Meanwhile, State Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda sparked another controversy on Friday (May 16, 2025) with his statements in Jabalpur that the 'entire country, the Army and all the personnel bowed down at the feet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi' in the wake of Operation Sindoor, giving more fodder to the attacking Opposition. Congress MLAs detained The Congress MLAs were also detained briefly, and a scuffle broke out between them and the police personnel who tried to remove them from the Raj Bhavan. 'BJP is not with the army, nor is it with the Constitution…It is only there with its chair! History is a witness that whenever the government has become dictatorial, the public has made it bite the dust,' Mr. Singhar said on X after his detention. Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari asked why the BJP has not taken any action against its two leaders despite the High Court terming Mr. Shah's remarks 'language of gutters' and Supreme Court calling them 'shameful'. 'Yet, why no strict action has been taken against the two Ministers? Is the BJP government protecting such seditious statements?' Mr. Patwari asked. Protest a drama: Mohan Yadav Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav termed the Congress's protest a 'drama' and accused the Opposition party of 'disrespecting' the judiciary. 'No matter how much drama the Congress does, the party also knows that the matter is in the court and no one is above the court. There was a case against the Leader of Opposition (Mr. Singhar) too. Will the Congress demand his resignation? Wherever there is an opportunity to insult the court, the Congress does not miss it,' Mr. Yadav said. The Chief Minister also raked up former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saying that she imposed Emergency after the Allahabad High Court pronounced a verdict against her. 'The Congress also changed the law on Triple Talaq given by the Supreme Court. We respect the order of the court, we follow whatever order the court gives,' he said, adding that the government will honour the court's decision in Mr. Shah's case. Meanwhile, the BJP is yet to initiate a formal disciplinary action against Mr. Shah.
