Hoffenheim signs Japan defender Koki Machida from Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise
SINSHEIM, Germany (AP) — German team Hoffenheim has signed Japan defender Koki Machida from Belgian champion Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. The 27-year-old Machida, who has played 17 games for Japan, signed a 'long-term contract' at Hoffenheim, the Bundesliga club said on Friday without elaborating. Kicker magazine reported Hoffenheim agreed to pay around 4.5 million euros ($5.3 million) for the player, possibly rising to over 5 million ($5.9 million) with bonuses. 'In Koki Machida we've found a central defender who brings exactly the qualities we were looking for in this position,' Hoffenheim sporting director Andreas Schicker said. 'He has international experience as a Japanese national team player and was an absolute key part of Royale Union Saint-Gilloise's championship-winning last season. Koki is an uncompromising defender who never shies away from a challenge.' Machida initially joined the Belgian team on loan from Kashima Antlers in 2022, earning a permanent switch the following year. Altogether he played 114 games for Union. 'For me the step to Hoffenheim and in the Bundesliga is the next in my career,' Machida said in a Hoffenheim statement. Hoffenheim finished just above the Bundesliga relegation zone last season. ___ AP soccer:

Hoffenheim take interest in Japanese defender Koki Machida
Kicker reports that TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are attempting to bring Japanese centre-back Koki Machida to the Bundesliga. The 17-times-capped Samurai international currently plies his trade for Belgian Pro League champions Union Saint-Gilloise. Negotiations for a purchase of the €11m-valued professional are ongoing. Hoffenheim continue to desperately find themselves in need of a defensive revamp following an awful season in which they conceded 68 league goals. Some help has already arrived in the form of versatile Brazilian defender Bernardo, who joined on a free transfer from Bochum. Advertisement Kicker also reiterates previous reports that the Sinsheimers have reconsidered their previous decision to part company with Norwegian loanee Leo Østigård. Hoffenehim presently negotiate a potential permanent purchase of the Norwegian from his parent club Stade Rennes. Kicker claims that Hoffenheim have negotiated down Rennes' initial €10m asking price. Machida may be seen as an alternative to Østigård. The 27-year-old has something of an inconsistent season and may be available for a price significantly below his current estimated market value. Harry Kane finishes Bundesliga as the top-scorer again
SINSHEIM, Germany (AP) — Harry Kane didn't need to start Bayern Munich's last game of the Bundesliga to finish as the league's top-scorer again. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany suggested before the game that the team's title-winning celebrations had taken their toll when he opted to start Kane among the substitutes for Saturday's match at Hoffenheim. The team was presented with the trophy after its win over Borussia Mönchengladbach the previous weekend and 14 of the players, including Kane, continued the party with a quick trip to Ibiza before returning to Munich. 'It's his first title,' Kompany said of Kane. 'Perhaps the week wasn't as optimal for him as I would have hoped, but it's normal.' Bayern went on to finish the season with a 4-0 win. Thomas Müller started in his last Bundesliga appearance for the club and made way for Kane for the last half hour. Kane set up Serge Gnabry for Bayern's third goal and completed the scoring with his league-leading 26th. 'It was nice to finish with another goal,' Kane said. It's the second consecutive year the 31-year-old Kane has finished as the Bundesliga top-scorer, making him the first player to win the cannon trophy in his first two seasons in the German league. Kane scored 36 times last season. Nine of his 26 goals were penalties this season. Both Bayer Leverkusen's Patrik Schick and Borussia Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy finished with 21 goals, with Schick needing less time than any other Bundesliga player between goals. ___ AP soccer:
