Besiktas keen on signing Sint Truiden's highly rated Japanese midfielder

Sacha Tavolieri is reporting that Turkish giants Besiktas are keen on signing Joel Chima Fujita from Sint Truiden. The player is said to be keen on the move to Istanbul with a proposal that is almost too good to refuse on the table for the player. Tavolieri reports that the Turkish club are now in discussion with the Canaries about a transfer for Fujita. For the player, a move to a side the size of Besiktas is a no brainer, especially if he wants to play for Japan at the World Cup next summer. Losing Fujita would certainly be a big blow for Sint Truiden. The Japanese midfielder is a key player in central areas defensively and has performed well since making the move to the club from Yokohama Marinos back in 2023. Since then, Fujita has played 63 games for the club and scored once. While prone to a yellow card, his all action style in central areas is crucial for sides that want to win the ball back in midfield and transition quickly to attack. Compared to other players in his position in Belgium, Fujita won more defensive actions than 88% of his fellow defensive midfielders. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Kashima Antlers bring Sint Truiden defender back to the J League

Sint Truiden have announced that left-back Ryoya Ogawa has left the club to join Kashima Antlers in the J League. The 28-year-old spent a few seasons in Europe but has now returned to Japan where he started his career. Neither side has discolosed whether or not there wsa a transfer fee and how many years the defender has signed with Kashima Antlers. Ogawa, who has been capped five times by the Japanese national team, began his career with FC Tokyo. After 173 appearances and six goals for the side, he spent a season on loan in Portugal with Vitoria de Guimaraes. Ogawa only made 11 appearances for the Portuguese outfit, but remained in Europe at the end of the 2022/2023 season by joining up with Sint Truiden. Initially on loan, Ogawa was brought in permanently last summer as a replacement for Eric Bocat, who had left to join Stoke City. Despite the sides struggles in the league, Ogawa had a good season. The left-sided player played 38 games in total for the club, scoring twice and providing four assists. He now joins a Kashima Antlers side that are top of the J league, while his former club FC Tokyo are down in 18th place. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Sint Truiden's Leo Kokubo's recent performances putting the spotlight on Japan's young goalkeeping talent

Last summer, Sint Truiden were once again looking for a new goalkeeper. Zion Suzuki, who had joined in 2023, was set to join Parma. Once again, the side turned to Japan to find a replacement. They settled on 24-year-old Leo Kokubo, a Japanese youth international who had been playing in Portugal for Benfica's second team. Despite the sides struggles this season, Kokubo has proved more than an adequate replacement for the excellent Suzuki. Kokubo and Suzuki are highlighting the excellent strength in depth that Japan have at the goalkeeping position. In the past few weeks Kokubo has helped the side win points with some fantastic reflex saves. It has been clear that, as the season has progressed, the goalkeeper has grown in confidence. It will certainly have helped having a strong Japanese core at the club, which has been standard for Sint Truiden since they got Japanese owners. None of those saves may have been as important as the one against Beerschot on Friday evening. With his side having taken a 1-0 lead, Beerschot were awarded a penalty. However, Kokubu was able to save it and in the end the side ran out 2-0 winners. ⛔️ | Leo Kokubo duikt de juiste kant uit en stopt de elfmeter van Beerschot! 🥅🧤 #STVBEE — DAZN België (@DAZN_BENL) March 7, 2025 This could be a huge moment in the season for the side. Dropping points against bottom of the table Beerschot would have all but guaranteed they would be playing in the relegation play-offs at the end of the regular season. Yet with these three points, the Canaries now have a chance of survival on the final day of regular competition. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson
