Legendary trainer's £100,000 horse ‘will be odds on for every race' after transformation from 300-1 no-hoper
HE is known for landing a touch or two - but even by Sir Mark Prescott's standards, this punt on Whatsgoingonmarvin was particularly filthy. Transformed from a 300-1 no-hoper, punters are now predicting the three-year-old will be 'odds on for every race' and win his next four or five after a sensational first triumph. 1 In truth, the job on Whatsgoingonmarvin had all the hallmarks of a typical Sir Mark gamble. Sent off as big as 300-1 in four previous runs, Whatsgoingonmarvin had been kept to 7f and a mile. He never finished better than sixth and was pumped 23 lengths on his last run over a mile at Kempton before being gelded in November last year. To many, stepping a horse up to 1m5f after that would seem like madness. But this is classic Sir Mark. Having gone off astronomical odds previously, Whatsgoingonmarvin was sent off 100-30 in the Class 5 handicap at Ayr on Monday. And, ridden by recent Queen Anne winner Paul Mulrennan, there was never a moment's worry for backers of the £100,000 son of Camelot. He made virtually all and ran out a ready winner, scooping the £4,123 first-place prize that surely paled in comparison to the punt followers of the horse landed. Mulrennan was eager not to win by too much, protecting the horse's mark somewhat for the future. And it seems Arc de Triomphe-winning Sir Mark - who used to smoke ten cigars a day - has big plans for Whatsgoingonmarvin this weekend. He is ready to back the horse up on Saturday and bang in another quickfire win. Whatsgoingonmarvin is entered in four races - the most profitable of which would be the 5.45 at Southwell worth £18,581 to the winner. That is over 1m4f, but he has entries at Hamilton and Chester over 1m3f, 1m5f and 1m6½ respectively. NAP is a word used in betting circles to describe a prediction that a tipster thinks has a particularly strong chance of winning. He did really well to strike at Sandown last time, getting up right near the line to win with a little up his sleeve. He saw out this trip strongly and a 4lb rise looks more than fair. IMPERIAL DATA (2.40 Cartmel, nb) Ran a cracker for most of a stronger race than this here last time. He looked booked for a place at least before just running out of juice inside the final furlong. Coming back in trip here can get his head on front off a fair mark. ME TARZAN (4.40 Ffos Las, treble) Can bring up the hat-trick after smooth wins at Lingfield at Leicester. He is right at home over this specialist trip. Templegate's Irish Derby verdict GREEN IMPACT showed real heart when going from the front to score at Leopardstown last time. The Harrington horses are in excellent form and he shapes as though moving up in trip will bring improvement. Lambourn won a poor Derby well and will be hard to beat but he's a very short price. Pride Of Arras was unhappy from the first step at Epsom and can prove the Dante form isn't a complete load of rubbish with a better run on this more conventional track. Tennessee Stud finished well into third at Epsom and looks booked for another place ahead of Lazy Griff who will have lots of competition for the early pace today.
