Ethereum Girl cruises to victory in Sires' Produce Stakes at Morphettville

Lindsay Park filly Ethereum Girl flexed her muscles in the Group 3 Sires' Produce Stakes, nailing a classy win at Morphettville Parks on Saturday. Handled expertly by jockey Jason Holder, the Ben, Will and JD Hayes -trained Ethereum Girl enjoyed a trail behind fellow border raider Volkano, before taking command at the 300m and booting away, holding off Mostly For Show and Tiptop Tori. Despite negating a slow tempo, Holder was able to get the filly to relax throughout, which was the main instruction from the Hayes camp leading into Saturday's 1400m contest. 'She settled beautiful today,' Holder, who has nailed 32 metro wins this season, said. 'Ben Hayes, the last thing he said to me was 'whatever you do, just get her to settle, just get her to relax so she can finish it off'. 'I didn't ride her last start, but (today) was a nice win.' The daughter of Japanese sire, Maurice, was a $275,000 yearling purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale in 2024. 'She settled really nicely which was great, Ben and the crew will be happy with that,' he said. 'I probably got there a bit too soon, because we were slow, (but) I presented her and she said 'let's go'. 'She pulled her way into it, which is good, she's got room for improvement for sure.' Local galloper Mostly For Show continued his competitive form, finishing hard for second, while rank outsider, Tiptop Tori ($41), ran a huge race at odds, finishing third. Impressive debut winner Volkano was quickly under pressure on straightening, and faded out to finish seventh. • Derby path looms for Busuttin-Young stayer Metro premiership leader Rochelle Milnes maintained her stranglehold on the Adelaide jockeys' title, the gun apprentice booted home impressive winner Sav On Ice for a four-length win in a Benchmark 68 (1550m). The colt has now won back-to-back races for trainer Darryl Carrison. Lachlan Neindorf moved into outright second in the jockeys' premiership with a winner aboard Placo, but despite a late season charge, he remains four wins behind Milnes heading into next Saturday's final meeting of the season. Gun hoop Todd Pannell had a good day in the saddle, snaring a double, with wins aboard Lonrodex and Super Alana.

Bootlegger leads the local hopes in Group 3 Sires' Produce Stakes at Morphettville Parks

Local hope Bootlegger hasn't put a foot wrong ahead of Saturday's Sires' Produce Stakes at Morphettville Parks, as trainers Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray hunt a second two-year-old stakes win this year. Bootlegger was a classy maiden winner at Gawler over 1200m, defeating Violet Lovebug by a length, who the gelding meets again on Saturday. A Group 3 tilt over 1400m awaits, with Victorians Volkano and Ethereum Girl set to make their presence felt in a field of nine on the Parks circuit. It looms as a significant test, but the early signs are that Bootlegger is up to the task. 'He came through it (Gawler) really well,' MacGillivray said. 'Obviously with two-year-olds, you're always thinking have they had enough? 'He's eating, he's had plenty of energy and we're looking forward to it.' Volkano is a $2.90 race favourite with Sportsbet, ahead of Bootlegger ($3.40) and Ethereum Girl ($4.50). Stokes filly Kazaru is a $9.50 shot, while the next SA-based contender in the market is Mostly For Show ($12). 'Obviously it's hard to line him up with that interstate form, but everything he's done has been solid,' she said. 'We think he's probably improved, we're pretty sure the extra trip will be right up his alley.' There was nothing discreet about Bootlegger’s win! The 2YO was very impressive winning his maiden at Gawler. — Dare To Dream (@DareToDreamSA) July 7, 2025 Bootlegger has shown tactical versatility in two career starts, charging home from well back to finish runner-up to From The Block on debut, before box-seating and careering away last start. He was ridden by Emily Finnegan on both occasions, and the Irish hoop, an experienced member of Adelaide's riding ranks, will pilot again on Saturday. • Volkano set to erupt again in Sires' Produce A win would be Finnegan's first Group race success in Australia, after four Listed victories earlier in her career. 'It would be a huge thrill for her, obviously she's been riding for a good few years. She's got a lot of experience,' MacGillivray said. 'Through no fault of her own, through circumstance and injury at times, she hasn't been able to capitalise when she's in really good form. 'She's riding well and she deserves the opportunity. She's ridden the horse well every time she's gone out on him. 'We're confident he'll run his best race and if that's good enough, that's good enough.' Clarken declared gun filly Steel Trap a 'bloody beauty' after she won the Group 3 David Coles at Morphettville earlier this year, and Bootlegger has the Brinkley-based conditioners equally excited. 'They're a different style of horse, Steel Trap was probably a bit tougher earlier on than him,' she said. 'Having said that, since he's been through the different stages of maturity, shin soreness and things, he's a pretty tough little character. 'He's obviously got above average ability. 'There's three Too Darn Hots in the race – I hope he's the best of them.'

Smart debut winner Volkano to test credentials in Group 3 Sires' Produce Stakes at Morphettville Parks

After putting his rivals to the sword in a crushing debut win, well-bred gelding, Volkano, is set to give the Sires' Produce Stakes a shake at Morphettville on Saturday. Volkano led from barrier to box to score a 4½ length win at Ballarat last Tuesday, way too sharp for his rivals over 1200m on the synthetic track. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Prepared by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, the stable has always had a big opinion of the two-year-old, who is by Too Darn Hot, out of stakes-winning mare Volks Lightning. He was a $425,000 yearling purchase at the 2024 Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast. 'He's come through it really well, obviously he was very impressive,' Calvin McEvoy, who trainers in partnership with father Tony, said. 'I don't know if he beat much that day, but as they say, you can only win, can't you? 'He's trained on nicely since that, it's a little bit of an aggressive placement, but there wasn't really the perfect race for him over here. 'He's obviously very well bred, we are going to give him a go, throw him in the deep end a little bit. 'There's only 13 nominations, there doesn't look to be a standout in the race, for that reason, it's a good opportunity to have a go at a Group 3 worth $150k.' The Volkano has erupted! Great to see Volkano win so stylishly on debut for @mcevoymitchell and owners! ðŸ' ðŸ' ðŸ' @BelmontBldstck — MyRacehorseAU (@MyRacehorseAU) July 8, 2025 • A gelding operation has seen Volkano start to piece it together, and while the preference was to leave him as a colt, the ultimate gear change may prove key to untapping his potential. 'We didn't want to (geld him), you pay a good bit of money for a colt with a pedigree like his, but he just wasn't putting his efforts into the right places,' McEvoy said. 'For that reason he had to be gelded, and it looks like it's going to be the making of the horse.' SA young gun Jacob Opperman will pilot Volkano in Saturday's Group 3 Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) on the Parks circuit. The McEvoy stable has won the race five times, twice as a father-son duo (2020, '22) alongside Tony's three earlier wins (2013, '17 and '19). 'He's going there as good as he can be, and we are looking forward to seeing where he fits,' McEvoy said.

2025 BRC Sires' Produce Stakes: Trainer Kelly Schweida wary of tough last run for Grafterburners

Trainer Kelly Schweida 's biggest concern for his rising star Grafterburners in Saturday's $1m BRC Sires' Produce Stakes at Eagle Farm is how much fuel is left in the tank after the colt's last gut-busting run across the road at Doomben. Grafterburners produced an eye-catching charge from out wide on a heavy track in the Group 2 Spirit of Boom Classic (1200m) two weeks ago to finish third behind Cool Archie and Gallo Nero, who is the $4.20 favourite for the Sires' Produce (1400m). Schweida also has exciting grey filly El Morzillo running in Saturday's Fred Best Classic (1400m), which offers the winner a golden ticket to the prestigious $3m Stradbroke Handicap in two weeks' time. Grafterburners is currently third in the betting market for the Sires' Produce for juveniles, behind the Hawkes Team's Gallo Nero and Michael Freedman 's undefeated gelding Aerodrome ($6.50). The Chris and Corey Munce -trained Cool Archie is listed as a $12 chance following his Spirit of Boom Classic victory, his third win in a row. Grafterburners will need another tremendous effort from barrier 16 on Saturday when the Eagle Farm track is almost certain to be worse than its current Soft 5 grading, with showers forecast in Brisbane on Friday and on race day. Another winner for @munceracing, with Cool Archie getting the nose down in the Spirit Of Boom Classic! — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 17, 2025 'That run was super,' Schweida said of the ride two weeks ago from Jason Collett, who will again be on-board for the Sires' Produce after Blake Shinn this week was ruled out of the rest of the winter carnival with a foot injury. 'The only trouble is that you don't know how much that takes out of them. 'It doesn't appear to have. He's worked good, his blood's good and he looks good. But he had a hard run the other day, four-deep. 'It's a strong Sires', as good as I've seen for a while.' Collett will ride El Morzillo in the Fred Best Classic after steering the filly to a last-start win in a 1350m race for three-year-olds on Doomben 10,000 day two weeks ago. The winner of more than $1m in prizemoney has firmed from $16 to $11 in the $300,000 Group 3 race, with the Chris Waller -trained Angela Capital the $3 favourite ahead of Media World ($7.50) and Just Party ($8). 'She's got an awkward gate too (11) but she bounced back super from that run the other day,' Schweida said. 'She looks good and she's got the same jockey on.' If El Morzillo wins the Fred Best Classic to gain guaranteed entry into the Stradbroke Handicap, she will carry just 49.5kg in the 1400m blue-riband race on June 14.
