How Diogo Jota made me rediscover my love for Liverpool Football Club

Liverpool's Portuguese striker Diogo Jota lifts the Premier League trophy at the end of the English Premier League football match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Anfield in Liverpool, north west England on May 25, 2025. Liverpool striker Diogo Jota died along with his brother early July 3, 2025 in a road accident in northwest Spain, the Spanish Civil Guard said. The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on a highway in the province of Zamora. The vehicle "left the road" before bursting into flames, the Civil Guard said, adding that the two passengers, Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Felipe, also a professional footballer, were deceased. Picture: Paul ELLIS/AFP Image: Paul ELLIS/AFP I began supporting Liverpool Football Club at four years old way back in 1990, and it was an easy choice since they were the defending First Division champions. To be honest, at the time I was more interested in He-Man and his adventures in the mystical world of Eternia, taking in the comfort of Castle Grayskull and learning to hate Skeletor. As I grew out of cartoons and began to follow football more seriously and learn the rules of the game, my hate of Skeletor was replaced by an intense dislike of Manchester United. My journey as a football supporter, of course, began with one of the most dominant periods by a football club in English football, and it was by my team's fiercest rival led by the genius that is Alex Ferguson. It would be 30 years of frustration, jealousy, and despair as a Liverpool supporter before I could witness them win the league again. Liverpool's Premier League Triumph Amidst Pandemic Restrictions Their league triumph, however, was soured for me as Liverpool won the Premier League in the 2019/2020 season at the height of Covid-19, which meant the games were played in empty stadiums and large gatherings were still prohibited. The players had to celebrate in front of cardboard cut-outs of their fans. The long-awaited Premier League triumph came with no physical interaction with the fans, and that took a lot of the joy out of that celebration. One player that joined a few months after Liverpool won the league that year was Diogo Jota from Wolves. I knew of him, but at the time it didn't seem like a great signing in my opinion. It would be some time before he would even start for Liverpool, if indeed he would be able to find a starting place in a powerful Reds side I thought. Then came that fateful day, October 24, 2021, now etched in my memory forever. The opposition? Manchester United at their home ground, Old Trafford. Their coach was none other than one of the stars of their heyday - Ole Gunnar Solskjær. After years of trauma dished out by United, it was always an especially tense fixture for me - even with Liverpool on their way to becoming a powerhouse in world football again. After a tight opening 10 minutes, a certain Jota found himself in the perfect position to convert a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold. 1-0. The small group of Liverpool fans erupted on away turf as their players led by Jota celebrated. In my lounge, I screamed as the ball smashed into the back of the net, the disturbance causing my dogs to wake from their slumber and wonder if I had indeed finally lost my mind. Mo Salah would go on to steal the headlines that day with a hat-trick as Liverpool romped to a 5-0 win a first for my side at Old Trafford in what Solskjær would describe as his 'darkest day' in his time leading United.

I transformed my body after just 5 months on Mounjaro....what happened when I came off it was shocking

A mother who saw instant success on the 'King Kong' weightloss jab Mounjaro said she was left looking like 'Skeletor' when she stopped using the injections. Ellen Ogley, 42, from Yorkshire, weighed 16st 12lbs and was a size 18 at her heaviest. While she lost 3st on an 'unsustainable diet' she turned to the weight loss medication Mounjaro in May last year to try and transform her body. The mother-of-three said it had an instant effect and stopped her incessant raiding of the snack cupboard. 'I thought it was going to be another diet trend but the food noises got switched off,' said Ms Ogley, who used the injections for five months. 'As soon as I went on it I realised "I've not touched the snack cupboard".' This change helped her make healthier choices in other aspects of her life and she started exercising. Soon the nursery manager had lost a further 3st, taking her down to a total body weight of around 10st. However, she said the process of weaning off the drug came with a worrying side effect. Mrs Ogley recalled how, in coming off the jab, she became obsessed with getting as 'skinny as possible'. 'I got trolled, they called me Skeletor. I was being told I looked like a 60-year-old,' she said. Skeletor is the name of a skull-faced villain from the 80s children's cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Losing muscle mass is known side-effect of weight loss jabs as well as other rapid weight loss methods. While dieters lose fat, they can also shed muscle if they consume very few calories and fail to perform muscle-building exercises. It was nasty social media comments, alongside Mrs Ogley's husband's concerns that she looked 'ill', that gave the wake-up call she needed. Mrs Ogley took up weight training and said this—combined with some healthy swaps—had a made a world of difference. 'I have abs at 42—it blows my mind,' she said. 'I have hacks in place. If I'm craving sweets I have [high protein] Greek yoghurt, berries and granola.' 'I still have takeaways but I exercise portion control. 'We make chicken kebabs as fakeaways instead of ordering them as takeaways.' She said making these swaps and cutting back on alcohol had helped prevent the weight from coming back. A study, published last month, warned that many patients using weight loss jabs risk piling the pounds back on within 10 months of quitting the injections. Scientists at Oxford University discovered the effects of GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy are short-lived if patients do not maintain a healthy lifestyle afterwards. Mrs Ogley said she hopes her example shows others they can maintain their weight loss if they stop using the drugs. She said she'd battled comfort eating and binge drinking after being diagnosed with cervical and ovarian cancer in 2023. 'I'd have two to three takeaways a week. My drinking was excessive,' she said, adding that she'd often share three bottles wine with her husband on an evening out. 'It helped numb everything.' As part of her cancer treatment, she was forced to undergo a hysterectomy—a major surgery to remove the uterus—but it was recommended she lost weight before going under the knife, to reduce the risk of complications. 'I said to myself "if I come out the other side I will try and take control of my health",' she said. While she started with an highly restrictive fasting diet that helped her lose 3st she knew it wasn't sustainable. 'I was doing it in not a very healthy way,' she said. 'I was almost starving myself.' This was when she turned to Mounjaro. As of Monday, obese patients in England will be able to access the 'revolutionary' weight-loss jab Mounjaro—free of charge— directly from their family doctor. Mounjaro, also known as tirzepatide, will be offered to around 220,000 people over the next three years under new NHS prescribing rules. GPs can now prescribe the drug to patients with a BMI over 40—classed as severely obese—and at least four obesity-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. Mounjaro is a weekly jab that can help patients shed up to a fifth of their body weight in a year. More than a million people in the UK are already using it via private clinics, where it costs around £250 a month. However, until now, only a limited number of patients could access it on the NHS via specialist weight-management services.

‘Masters of the Universe': Nicholas Galitzine Has the Power in First Look at He-Man

Production on the new 'Masters of the Universe' movie has wrapped, and to mark the occasion, star Nicholas Galitzine ('The Idea of You') offered up a first look at him in costume as He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, who must battle the evil Skeletor in this adaptation of the Mattel toy franchise. Travis Knight, the CEO of Laika and director of the animated 'Kubo and the Two Strings' and 2018's 'Transformers' spinoff 'Bumblebee,' directed the new 'Masters of the Universe' movie from a screenplay by Chris Butler. 'Well, that's a wrap on 'Masters of the Universe.' It has been an honour shouldering the responsibility of playing Adam and He Man,' Galitzine posted on Instagram. 'It's been the role of a lifetime and I put everything into it. There's not much I can show you, but I am so proud of the movie we've made. Thanks to our amazing cast and crew for all your hard work.' Jared Leto fills the Skeletor role in the movie, while the rest of the cast includes Camila Mendes ('Teela'), Morena Baccarin ('The Sorceress'), Alison Brie ('Evil-Lyn'), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson ('Malcolm/Fisto'), Idris Elba ('Duncan/Man-at-Arms'), Sam C. Wilson ('Trap Jaw'), Hafthor Bjornsson ('Goat Man'), Kojo Attah ('Tri-Klops'), James Purefoy ('King Randor') and Charlotte Riley ('Queen Marlena'). 'Masters of the Universe' will be released exclusively in theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026 before it streams on Prime Video and is produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nicholas Galitzine (@nicholasgalitzine) Mattel introduced the world to He-Man in 1982 with the launch of a toy line (dubbed Masters of the Universe) and the debut of the animated series 'He-Man and the Masters of the Universe' the following year. The show was about Prince Adam of Eternia, a man who looked just like He-Man, but was missing the hero's tanned skin. The show ended two seasons and 130 episodes later, but the story of He-Man lived on. In 1985, the animated movie 'The Secret of the Sword' introduced the hero's sister, She-Ra, who also later ended up with her own series, 'She-Ra: Princess of Power.' By 1987, both series had ended and the most famous iteration, the live-action film 'Masters of the Universe,' was released. Dolph Lundgren filled the role of He-Man and Frank Langella played Skeletor in the Cannon Films release. Mattel reintroduced audiences to He-Man three years later with the release of the series 'The New Adventures of He-Man.' The series was rebooted again in 2002, 2018 and 2021, as was 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power' on Netflix. 'Masters of the Universe' is one of several bets on '80s IP for Amazon MGM Studios, which also includes a 'Voltron' movie and a new 'Highlander' film starring Henry Cavill. NYT Crossword Puzzle Clues And Answers For Sunday, May 4

Crossword Welcome to the inaugural edition of this New York Times Crossword clues and answers guide, where I go through the puzzle and pull out all the answers to the toughest questions the NYT has for you. And they are really tough, as you probably know by now, depending on the day. Today we will begin with the Sunday, May 4 puzzle. But first: Well, the first step here is that if you're doing this online and not in the newspaper, you will need a full all-access subscription to the New York Times, which allows you to play online and it gives you access to all archives of all puzzle games on the site. Past that, well, it's a crossword. You will be given clues stretching on both directions on the board and find the letters that fill out the entire thing correctly. Clues can be tough on their own, but with multiple answers potentially in the same lettercount, they can be downright diabolical. The puzzle has a timer to see how you're doing for your personal bests, and don't forget about the 'Rebus' button which turns some squares into two letter spaces, which is always a nightmare. But don't worry, we're here to help. Some really tough ones in there, and I was embarrassed I thought 'May the fourth be with you' was 'live long and prosper' because that was the only sci-fi phrase that came to mind. To be far, that's not exactly in the movies. Favorite Clue - I really enjoyed the 'companion who takes your breath away' being a blow-up doll, extremely clever. Hardest Clue - Always a lot to choose from here, but it's almost always something with a Rebus, which in this case whas the ginsu knife from the old TV ads, as sometimes it will be used to make something plural, but not in this case, and you needed it to face the base word in. Very tough. That's all for today, see you tomorrow. Maybe. Depending on how this goes. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

As He-Man in ‘Masters of the Universe,' Nicholas Galitzine shows off ‘intense training' in first look

Wielding the iconic Power Sword and boasting a muscular build, actor Nicholas Galitzine is showing off his take on He-Man for the upcoming live-action adaptation of 'Masters of the Universe.' The 'Red, White & Royal Blue' and 'Idea of You' star posted a first-look image on social media, writing that the anticipated movie is now in production. Amazon MGM Studios, Mattel and the film's accounts posted the same. Mattel created the 'Masters of the Universe' franchise, based on a genre-bending, sci-fi and medieval story set on the planet Eternia, in the early '80s. With the popularity of MOTU toys, books and comics came video games, films and multiple animated series. There was a previous live-action movie in 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as the villain Skeletor. He-Man is the franchise's central hero, known for his superhuman strength. The bulk of the franchise's adaptations focus on He-Man's conflict with Skeletor, who will be played by Jared Leto in the upcoming film. The rights to a film adaptation have changed hands many times, but in May 2024, Amazon MGM Studios announced the big-budget live-action project with director Travis Knight at the helm. Days before the release of the teaser image, more cast members were revealed, including Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Camila Mendes as Teela, Morena Baccarin as Sorceress, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto. The cast also includes James Purefoy, Sasheer Zamata, John Xue Zhang, Christian Vunipola, Charlotte Riley, Hafthor Bjornsson and Kojo Attah. 'Our director Travis Knight has assembled the most incredible ensemble cast and created a stunning tapestry of Eternia and its surrounding world,' Galitzine wrote on Instagram after saying he went through 'several months of intense training' for the role. 'I can't wait for you to see. More to come, but until then, here's a sneak peek at the Sword of Power. By the power of Grayskull!' To transform into 'the strongest man in the universe,' as he described his character to W Magazine in January, Galitzine said he was doing a lot of stunt work, weightlifting and eating. 'I'm eating about 4,000 calories a day, but the amount of physical work I'm doing, you end up hungry at the end of the day, which is quite surprising,' he told the magazine. 'This is the fun part. I will eventually go into what's called the cutting phase, where I'm going to be starved and so rude to everyone. I can only apologize for the person I'm going to become in a few months' time.' 'Masters of the Universe' is set to be released June 5, 2026.
