Outlander dress to go on display as part of film tourism campaign

Outlander is entering its eighth and final season later this year and the Trust is celebrating its global success by displaying the costume for fans. Played by Lotte Verbeek, the character Geillis is first season in season one and wore the dress made of felted wool bodice and a heavy wool weave skirt. It was deliberately designed to create a feeling she was out of place in the 18th century before it was later revealed she was a time traveller from the 1960s. From July 16, the dress will be on display within Culross Palace with its accompanying white under garment, corset and underskirt. Read More Geillis Duncan – better known as Gillie – was a real person who was accused of witchcraft in 1590. She was forced into a confession by magistrate David Set and it fuelled more witchcraft accusations in Scotland, contributing to the North Berwick witch trials with more than 60 people accused. Anna Rathband, the National Trust for Scotland's Filming Manager, said: 'We've had a great relationship with the production of 'Outlander' for more than a decade. 'Six out of its eight seasons filmed at Trust places, including Culross Palace, Falkland Palace, the Hermitage, Newhailes, and Preston Mill. 'Hundreds, if not thousands, of Outlander fans have already come from across the world to engage with the story and to learn more about the history of our country. 'We're excited to bring a piece of Outlander to Culross Palace and make Geillis' dress available for the public to see up close. Many fans of the series will recognise Culross as the fictional village of Cranesmuir in seasons one and two, and the village, Culross Palace, and the Palace's garden have featured in a variety of scenes throughout the series, so it will give them a chance to stand in the 'Outlander' world and connect with a piece of its history.' In Outlander, Geillis first appears in 1743 and befriends the main character, Claire Randall. She is eventually tried and executed for witchcraft and is revealed to be Gillian Edgars, a Jacobite who deliberately returned to Scotland before the 1745 uprising to try and change the course of history. VisitScotland's 2023 visitor survey indicated that 36% of European visitors and 37% of long-haul visitors were inspired to travel to Scotland because of film, TV and books featuring Scotland. Dozens of National Trust for Scotland locations serve as the backdrop for film and TV projects, including Outlander, Skyfall, Outlaw King and Mary Queen of Scots as well as many more. The display of the dress is included with admission to Culross Palace and Garden. The Palace is open daily, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. until 30 September, and daily, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. from 1-31 October.

Firefighters tackle large blaze at Surrey nature reserve

The fire was captured by Laura Watts. Firefighters have been tackling a large blaze at a nature reserve in Surrey, as temperatures remain high across the south. Surrey Fire & Rescue Service reported 16 fire engines at the scene on Hankley Common, in Thursley, in a post on X on Saturday evening, July 12th. The heathland, part of a SSSI nature reserve, is home to rare lizards and ground-nesting birds. In a Facebook post on Sunday, Cllr Phoebe Sullivan from Waverley Borough Council said the fire had now been contained, but crews were still monitoring the situation. The fire service said about eight hectares (20 acres) of woodland and heathland was affected and advised local people to avoid the area and to close windows and doors. In 2022 a devastating fire in the area prompted a major incident and the evacuation of more than 20 homes. The Common is used as an army training area, and has been used as a film set, including for the James Bond film Skyfall. The latest heatwave has led to hosepipe bans being brought in across parts of the country, with temperatures set to remain high on Sunday. Temperatures are forecast to dip marginally compared to yesterday with possible highs of 31C, before Monday brings some relief from the baking heat. South East Water said demand for drinking water had reached "record levels since May" and announced impending restrictions which will mean customers in Kent and Sussex are banned from using a hosepipe to water gardens and plants, clean vehicles, fill swimming pools or ponds or clean paths, walls or windows from July 18. Met Office meteorologist Kathryn Chalk said: "While we've seen the peak of the heat in this heatwave through today it's still going to be very warm on Sunday before turning cooler for many of us on Monday.

‘Jeopardy!' under fire over ‘poorly phrased' James Bond clue

'Jeopardy!' is taking some heat for a confusing James Bond clue. Earlier this week, a Final Jeopardy prompt about the beloved film franchise left fans scratching their heads, as they argued that the clue was 'convoluted.' Advertisement During an episode that aired on July 7, host Ken Jennings announced that 'Movie Music' was the category for the Final Jeopardy clue. 'The last 2 best song Oscar winners whose titles were the same name as the movie they were in had this man in the leading role,' the clue read. Contestant Ashley had begun writing down actor Timothee Chalamet as her answer, which Jennings said was incorrect. The second contestant, Vince, wrote down, 'Who is Daniel Craig,' which was the correct answer. Advertisement The films referenced in the clue were 2012's 'Skyfall' and 2021's 'No Time to Die.' Adele sung the title song for the earlier film, while Billie Eilish performed the other. The episode's returning champion, Scott, also answered correctly, earning his third win. While Scott basked in his victory, fans were quick to slam the game show for its 'confusing' Final Jeopardy round. Advertisement 'This was poorly phrased. I assumed they were asking about the last 2 Best Song winners: 2024 and 2025. The strength of the comma!' one viewer wrote in the comments section of the 'Jeopardy!' YouTube page. 4 'Jeopardy!' came under fire this week after giving a Final Jeopardy question that some fans claimed was misleading. abc / Jeopardy! 4 The Final Jeopardy question from July 7, 2025. abc / Jeopardy! Another fan wrote, 'They're looking for Craig as the correct response, but I wonder if they would have accepted Bond as an answer. When the clue says leading role, it doesn't specify if they are asking for actor or character…' Advertisement While another viewer chimed in on X, formerly known as Twitter, 'Who is James Bond? Kinda convoluted FJ but manageable.' As passionate fans called out the Final Jeopardy prompt, game show host Jennings had previously said that he had '100% empathy' for the contestants' show fails. 4 Some fans pointed out that the 'confusing' phrasing made it seem like the question was asking about the previous two movies that won the Oscar for Best Song. abc / Jeopardy! While Jennings knows it's not easy to compete on the show, having once been a contestant himself, he told Fox News Digital in April that his 'heart just goes out to these people' who participate in the show. 'It's their first time on TV, and we throw them into this crucible. It's a high-pressure environment, so I'm always thinking, how can I make these people comfortable? Please, please get this right, somebody.' 4 The returning champion Scott got the Final Jeopardy question right and won the game. abc / Jeopardy! He added, 'I'm 100% empathy out there for these three people.' Advertisement The Seattle-born host began his 'Jeopardy!' career 20 years ago, winning over $2.5 million over the course of 74 consecutive games. Jennings took over hosting duties after the death of longtime host Alex Trebek from pancreatic cancer in 2020.

The abandoned London Underground platforms stuck in the 90s

While many Londoners act like they know all there is to know about the Tube, you might be surprised by one small detail. Among the many stations and platforms along the Tube, there are a handful that have become abandoned and are stuck in time. Including platforms at Charing Cross that have been closed to the public since 1999. The abandoned Tube platforms at Charing Cross Although Charing Cross Tube station is very much still active, there are some platforms within the station that have long been shut down. In 1979, Charing Cross joined the Jubilee line and saw the use of two platforms, a concourse and passenger tunnels. However, in 1999, the Jubilee line in Charing Cross was closed to the public after plans were created to extend the line to Lewisham. Charing Cross was never intended to be the final stop for the Jubilee line, with plans in the 1980s to regenerate the Docklands and East End area seeing a reroute of the line. The plans would see a reroute of the line from Green Park towards the south of the river to Waterloo, London Bridge, before moving back to Greenwich and Stratford. The change meant that Charing Cross's Jubilee platforms were no longer needed and were shut down. Despite being closed off, the platforms gained a new lease of life and have since become a filming location for major blockbusters. The platforms have featured in the likes of 28 Weeks Later, the James Bond movie Skyfall and the TV show Spooks. Recommended Reading Although the platforms are shut off to the public for daily use, you can still visit Charing Cross's Jubilee platforms through a Hidden London tour with the London Transport Museum. The Charing Cross: Behind the Silver Screen lets guests see behind the scenes of one of the busiest Tube stations in London. Allowing you to walk beneath Trafalgar Square and explore the closed-off Jubilee line platforms, passenger corridors, and concourses.

Former James Bond costume designer doubts whether the spy franchise can be rebooted

Former James Bond costume designer Jany Temime has questioned whether it will be possible to reboot the spy franchise. The designer worked with Sam Mendes on the 007 movies Skyfall and Spectre and doubts how the character can be modernised as the franchise enters a new era without Daniel Craig as she pointed out the difficulties that the 1917 filmmaker had adapting the series to the times a decade ago. Temime, 77, told Deadline: "He tried his best with a lot of psychology, talent and his incredible quality as a director... but we are 10 years later. "I'm a James Bond fan but how are you going to have a guy killing somebody, making love to a woman and then drinking a Martini to forget, and then have those girls who know that they are going to die, because the Bond girls always die... I'm really wondering how you can adapt that formula to 2025." Denis Villeneuve has been announced as the director of the upcoming James Bond film and Temime is delighted that producer David Heyman is involved in the picture for his Heyday Films banner after they worked together on the Harry Potter franchise. The French costume designer said: "David is an amazing producer. I worked with him for 10 years, and I know that if somebody can carry the project, it's him. He's talented, he's clever, he's brilliant. "Denis Villeneuve, I'm sure will do an excellent job so I just wish them the best of luck!" The forthcoming Bond movie will be the first made without the involvement of the Broccoli family after they relinquished control of the long-running franchise to Amazon MGM Studios earlier this year but Temime elected not to name who she would cast as the iconic spy. The costume designer – who has worked on movies such as Judy and Black Widow – said: "I know so many incredible, wonderful, sexy young actors, but it depends what direction they want to go." Henry Golding has been tipped as a possible successor to Craig as 007 but feels that taking on the role would be a "nightmare" because of all the pressure and expectation that comes with it. He told People: "I think that's every actor's kind of nightmare. But at the same time, [you're] also wanting to kind of add something new to a franchise." The Crazy Rich Asians actor believes that the Bond role would be far more appealing if there weren't so much "cultural pressure" attached. Henry said: "Maybe I'm just a p****. I don't know. But I think I would love it so much more if there wasn't that overhanging cultural pressure." The 38-year-old star argues that the Bond franchise should broaden its horizons by adding "more agents" to the story. He said: "Why can't they bring out more agents or more OO's? I think that would be so much more fun, because there just isn't the restraints and the expectation."
