Parents Told Newborn's Noises Are 'Normal'—Then Comes Devastating Diagnosis

Two parents from Toronto, Canada, were excited to bring their newborn daughter home from hospital, but just a few weeks later, they were rushing her to the emergency room. Stephanie Mulhall-Atkinson and Justin Atkinson (@warriergirlsloane) shared their story on Instagram, where they said their daughter, Sloane, had been making a soft but persistent grunting noise. Stephanie, 37, told Newsweek that the couple brought this to the attention of doctors, nurses and their pediatrician. From left: Justin Atkinson holds baby Sloane wrapped in hospital bedsheets. From left: Justin Atkinson holds baby Sloane wrapped in hospital bedsheets. @warriorgirlsloane "We were told that she was just moaning and that it was normal and that was just her normal baby noises, which we now know is not true," Stephanie said. The grunting, the couple now know, was not harmless. It was a sign that Sloane was struggling to breathe, and her body was working overtime to survive. The parents said several symptoms were overlooked. "She would mostly grunt when she was sleeping and being held," Stephanie added. "We also noticed that she was sweaty … and was happier when she was laying by herself." When Sloane stopped eating one morning and had a faint ring of blue around her mouth—usually a sign of cyanosis where oxygen levels are low—the parents took her to the ER. At The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), doctors told Stephanie and Justin that Sloane's grunting meant their baby was in distress. "We were shocked and angry," Justin said. "Everything quickly declined from there." Within hours, Sloane was in the emergency operating room, surrounded by more than 20 specialists. A cardiology fellow performed an echocardiogram that revealed her heart was barely functioning. Then came the devastating diagnosis: dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart becomes enlarged and weakened, leaving it unable to pump blood effectively. A week later, doctors confirmed she was in end-stage heart failure, and a transplant would be Sloane's only chance at survival. "You can't even comprehend what's happening," Stephanie said. "To hear that your tiny perfect 'healthy' baby needs a heart transplant to survive is truly beyond words." Sloane has now spent seven months in hospital. The family relocated from Vancouver to Toronto's SickKids Hospital, one of only three centers in Canada equipped to implant a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). This now keeps Sloane alive as she waits for a donor heart. Sloane has now been on the transplant list for six months. The average wait time in Canada is six to 12 months. "We're just living life as 'normally' as possible until then," Stephanie said. "She's the happiest, funniest girl. Each day, we focus on her development and keeping her growing and getting strong, so that her recovery posttransplant goes smoothly! We can't wait to be able to take her home."

Brad Marchand's kids send him adorable voicemail before Stanley Cup Final Game 6: ‘No matter what happens...'

As Brad Marchand prepares for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, he has received a reminder of what matters most off the ice. Just hours before the puck dropped at Amerant Bank Arena, The Players' Tribune shared a video capturing a voicemail sent by Marchand's three kids: Sloane, Sawyer, and Rue. The Florida Panthers veteran, who was traded from the Boston Bruins earlier this year, was one win away from championship glory. For a player chasing the Cup, his children's voices were the kind of reminder that puts everything in perspective. Marchand hears from his biggest fans: 'We've got you' Each of Marchand's children introduced themselves in the recording, sending him good luck and reminding him of their unflinching support. 'Congratulations on getting on to the Stanley Cup Finals,' said Sawyer. Sloane said, 'It's been so awesome to watch you over my whole childhood…' 'No matter what happens in the game, we're so proud of you. You still got us and we got you,' Sawyer continued. Rue, the youngest, also chimed in to tell her father how much she loved him, 'The best daddy in the whole wide world,' while Sloane reassured Marchand that his family would always be there waiting for him, no matter how the series turned out. Katrina Marchand joins in after touching Father's Day post The video was shared widely across hockey circles and gave fans a rare view of Marchand not as a playoff veteran, but simply as a dad. The voicemail wasn't the only sign of support from home. Katrina Marchand, Brad's wife, also reposted the video. She had previously shared a Father's Day tribute as well, describing her husband as 'fiercely devoted' and 'deeply present in their children's lives'. With the Cup in hand, emotions are at an all-time high. But the voicemail from his kids likely kept Marchand grounded, reminding him that his legacy had already reached much farther than just the rink.

Justin Baldoni's $650 million lawsuit tossed out: Judge sides with Blake Lively and other defendants

Justin Baldoni faced a major legal blow as a judge dismissed his countersuit against Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and their publicist, along with his defamation lawsuit against The New York Times. The court's decision on June 9 ends the director's $650 million legal battle, accusing them of extortion and defamation. Also Read: Is Cardi B dropping a diss track on Offset? Here's what she said In the opinion and order filing obtained by PEOPLE, Judge Lewis J. Liman stated, 'The Wayfarer Parties have not alleged that Lively is responsible for any statements other than the statements in her CRD complaint, which are privileged.' It further read, 'The Wayfarer Parties have alleged that Reynolds and [publicist Leslie] Sloane made additional statements accusing Baldoni of sexual misconduct and that the Times made additional statements accusing the Wayfarer Parties of engaging in a smear campaign.' He continued in the filing, 'But the Wayfarer Parties have not alleged that Reynolds, Sloane or the Times would have seriously doubted these statements were true based on the information available to them, as is required for them to be liable for defamation under applicable law." The judge also added, 'The Wayfarer Parties' additional claims also fail. Accordingly, the Amended Complaint must be dismissed in its entirety." In a statement they said, 'As we have said from day one, this '$400 million' lawsuit was a sham, and the Court saw right through it,' adding that they 'look forward to the next round, which is seeking attorneys' fees, treble damages and punitive damage' from the Watferer Parties who they say 'perpetrated this abusive litigation, as reported by People. Lively's publicist, Slonae's lawyer, also reelased a separate statement. Sigrid McCawley said in the statement, '"Leslie Sloane has consistently said that she never defamed Baldoni or the Wayfarer Parties and she was wrongfully dragged into this lawsuit because the Wayfarer Parties wanted to actively harm Sloane's reputation. Today's decision by the Court makes clear that Sloane did nothing wrong. Sloane stands fully vindicated, and justice has been served."
