Lohara bridge poorly designed, to cause traffic chaos: Activists

1 2 Ludhiana: Activists have flagged concerns over the design of the under-construction Lohara Bridge, warning it could trigger traffic bottlenecks at a key junction. The project is part of the district's Rs 11.94 crore Southern Bypass project. The Council of Engineers and Public Action Committee have formally raised the issue with the state's chief secretary, questioning its planning under the Smart City mission. The activists argue that it will lead to chaos and bottlenecks due to traffic issues at the junction on the Southern Bypass. They have sent their complaint to the chief secretary of the state govt. The bridge is set to intersect the Southern Bypass at the same level, creating a cross-junction. Traffic from the 200-foot-wide bypass will cross the Southern Bypass and use the under-construction bridge to reach the opposite bank of the Sidhwan Canal. From there, vehicles heading towards Doraha or Delhi will turn right and use the newly built bridge near Morgan Crossing to rejoin the Southern Bypass. The bridge is being constructed at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the Sidhwan Canal. After crossing it, vehicles turning left will encounter a sharp V-shaped bend, creating a potential bottleneck. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kardiolog prozrazuje: Tuto metodu pro rychlejší ztrátu tuků by měl znát každý! Undo The road on the far side of the canal is too narrow to accommodate heavy vehicles like trailers, which will need to maneuver back and forth to make turns. Similar difficulties will arise for vehicles turning right. To ensure smooth traffic flow, land acquisition on this side is essential - but no steps have been taken in that direction. A similar issue exists at the Buddha Dariya bridge in Haibowal Kalan, which remains unused due to a land dispute with a private property owner. This raises concerns about the lack of practical planning in Smart City projects and the potential misuse of funds. Activists argue that instead of building this bridge, a flyover over the Southern Bypass would have been a more effective solution. An RCC slab over the canal could have widened the bypass at the junction. Traffic from Doraha or Ferozepur Road could have used the flyover, while vehicles from the 200-foot bypass could have passed underneath to turn left or right. Traffic congestion is already an issue at the Ishar Nagar Bridge. A flyover with a ramp starting before this bridge could have addressed both problems. However, the current design introduces two level crossings - one at the Southern Bypass and another at the old Lohara Bridge - likely worsening congestion at Morgan Crossing as well. Overall, activists believe the bridge is unnecessary and poorly designed in terms of utility, functionality, and effectiveness. They are calling for a technical audit to assess the potential problems for commuters and an investigation into the approval of such an angular design, which creates three major bottlenecks. Safety measures at the construction site are lacking, they allege. No barriers have been installed along the canal banks to prevent accidents, and heaps of soil have made the road slippery - especially dangerous for two-wheelers during rain, increasing the risk of vehicles skidding into the canal.

MIGHT rolls out two innovation centres to drive local tech in rail and smart city sectors

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, has launched two innovation centres to drive local technology development in the rail and smart city sectors. The launch of the Industrial Technology Innovation Centre (Itic) and the Smart City Experience and Next Generation Innovation Centre (Scenic) was held in conjunction with MIGHT's 30th annual general meeting. MIGHT said the Itic programme was developed in collaboration with the Malaysia Rail Industry Corporation (Maric) and the Malaysia Smart Cities Alliance Association to support the deployment of home-grown solutions. 'The programme seeks to drive the deployment of home-grown technological solutions across the rail and smart city sectors, enhancing Malaysia's position in high-tech innovation,' it said. As part of the initiative, Maric partnered Tech Store Malaysia to develop a Smart Rail Monitoring System that leverages real-time data and predictive analytics to enhance maintenance and operational efficiency. 'Real-time monitoring of train location, speed, axle counting, and overload detection is an important feature supporting predictive and preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and improve safety,' MIGHT said. MIGHT said it has released the Malaysia Rail Industry Report, developed with input from stakeholders, to highlight emerging technologies such as additive manufacturing, remote monitoring, smart stations and green technologies. 'Featured technologies include additive manufacturing, rail flaw detection systems, energy-efficient and green technologies, advanced training tools, data-driven decision making, remote monitoring, smart maintenance, train automation, and smart station infrastructure.' it added. The Scenic facility, built using composite materials under the Industrialised Building System, is intended as a collaborative hub to showcase and demonstrate local smart city technologies. 'It also acts as a bridge between innovation and policy, facilitating the deployment of future technologies in alignment with national urban development goals,' MIGHT said. Furthermore, a Smart City Directory has also been introduced to catalogue technologies, products and services along the smart city value chain to support data-driven decision-making among municipalities and industry players. 'These initiatives reflect MIGHT's ongoing commitment to strengthening Malaysia's innovation landscape through nurturing local technological capabilities,' it said. MIGHT added that the efforts support the 10 by 10 Malaysian Science, Technology, Innovation and Economy (MySTIE) Framework and the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy 2021-2030. 'The Itic programme will continue to expand across multiple platforms to advance strategic technologies and socioeconomic drivers, ensuring Malaysia's position at the forefront of global innovation in transport and urban development,' it said. – Bernama
