Smart meters won't burden consumers: APSPDCL
The Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has clarified that the installation of smart meters will not lead to any additional burden on power consumers.
Dispelling widespread misconceptions around the meters, which is being discussed widely, Chairman and Managing Director K. Santhosha Rao said that the smart meters installation is part of the union Government's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) which is being implemented across all States.
Mr. Rao said: 'The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) had approved the proposals for installing smart meters in the State in February 2021. The smart meters are currently being installed for government and commercial services within the APSPDCL, and for household consumers with high power consumption.'
He emphasised that consumers need not pay any fee at the time of installation of smart meters and there would be no along added to the monthly electricity bills.
Highlighting the benefits while introducing the 'Smart Meter Consumer App', Mr. Rao said that the app allows consumers to monitor their electricity consumption in real time, getting a chance to regulate usage and bring down their usage charges, apart from receiving regular alerts.
