Ng: Selangor Intelligent Parking initiative key to state's 'smart city' ambitions

KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Intelligent Parking (SIP) is more than just an initiative to improve parking systems under local councils; it's a key part of the state's "smart city" ambitions. Selangor Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the "smart city" concept is the "way of the future". Ng stated that the SIP was being planned with this larger vision in mind. The system, he said, would align with the Smart Selangor initiative and serve the state's broader agenda, including establishing command centres and harnessing the power of big data. Ng also highlighted that beyond improving the parking system, improving security was a significant concern. "Previously, our parking systems did not have any integrated surveillance cameras (CCTVs) or other features," he told the New Straits Times. "Having such features means we can integrate our operations with the police. It would not be limited to just parking." "These things can be implemented together for the whole of Selangor in the future. This is for the first phase, and if it's successful, we can extend this model to all of Selangor," he added. Ng was commenting on concerns raised by several Pakatan Harapan Members of Parliament from Selangor. Earlier today, Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof, Subang MP Wong Chen, Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung, and Selayang MP William Leong held a press conference on SIP in the Dewan Rakyat. Among the issues they raised was the possibility of reduced revenues for local councils. Ng assured that the state government will ensure the implementation of the planned smart parking system results in a "win-win" situation for all parties, including local councils. He acknowledged the government was aware of the concerns some had about the SIP initiative, particularly the possible loss of revenue for local councils. "We have met councillors (from the local councils involved in SIP)," Ng said. "We take their concerns very seriously, but we still have time to look into these concerns to find a win-win solution." On the rollout, Ng said the Selangor Exco meeting today (Wed) would discuss the issues raised to ensure SIP's implementation is proper and goes smoothly. "But if more time is needed for further discussions, we will do it (postpone implementation)," he clarified. Ng also explained that the SIP for the four local councils involved – Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Selayang, and Shah Alam – does not follow the traditional privatisation model. "This new model was approved by the state National Security Council. We involved Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) and state-owned subsidiary Rantaian Mesra," he said. "Through Rantaian Mesra, we also invited public and private companies to work with the local authorities on SIP." Ng expressed confidence that parking via SIP could be managed more effectively than before. Addressing questions about the RM200 million for the initial capital investment, which would be borne by the concessionaire, Ng said this figure was an estimated amount covering all four local councils over a five-year period. This would include upgrades to CCTVs and related systems. This includes the installation of about 1,800 CCTV cameras in high-traffic parking areas within the four councils. "For example, many people use false plates these days, so we must be able to detect these fake plates," he said, adding that this included cloned cars. "Otherwise, when you issue a summons and someone challenges it in court, we can lose."

PJ Stadium to host Sukma football final, closing ceremony while SIC set for opening

Also present was Selangor state executive Councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star SHAH ALAM: The Petaling Jaya Stadium has been selected as the venue for the football final of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor from Aug 15-24 next year. The announcement was made by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari after chairing the organising committee meeting in Shah Alam on Tuesday (July 22). Apart from hosting the football final, the Petaling Jaya Stadium will also serve as the venue for the Sukma closing ceremony, while the opening ceremony will, for the first time, be held at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC). The decision to use the Petaling Jaya Stadium was made as the state's iconic Shah Alam Stadium is currently undergoing reconstruction and is only expected to be completed in 2030. As a result, track and field events will take place at Universiti Putra Malaysia Stadium in Serdang. To ensure the smooth running of the group stage football matches, several other stadiums will also be used, including the Selayang Stadium and Salak Tinggi Stadium, along with facilities at selected local universities through strategic partnerships. "The stadium is the home ground of the Selangor Red Giants. We will hold discussions with the club's management, but I don't foresee it being an issue," said Amirudin. "That's also why we decided not to hold the track and field events there – to avoid affecting the condition of the pitch and the surrounding area. Instead, track and field will be held at UPM. "The men's football final will take place at the Petaling Jaya Stadium, while the women's final will be held at the Selayang Stadium. It was also confirmed that 28 core sports and five optional sports will be contested, with all nine districts in Selangor playing a role in hosting the events. Track cycling will be the only exception, as it will be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. Amirudin said the decision to involve districts outside the Klang Valley is part of efforts to streamline logistics for participating contingents and to ease traffic congestion during peak hours. The Selangor state government is also prepared to deploy its Smart Selangor buses as shuttle transport for athletes and officials to facilitate their movement throughout the Games. "We will work closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), local authorities and the Selangor Mobility Committee to coordinate transportation for Sukma. "The plan is to reassign a portion of the Smart Selangor buses specifically for the Games, instead of their usual daily routes. These will function as shuttle services for athletes and officials to help minimise traffic congestion. "If escort vehicles are needed, I believe the local authorities and police can assist to ensure traffic remains manageable, especially since congestion could be one of the challenges during the event," he added.

Full resumption of Smart Selangor bus service in Subang Jaya in first week of June

PETALING JAYA: All the Smart Selangor bus routes under the supervision of Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) are expected to resume by the first week of June. Selangor investment, trade and mobility committee chairman Ng Sze Han said in a statement that the state government regrets the service disruption on routes SJ01, SJ02, SJ03, SJ04, and SJ05 under MBSJ's supervision, and that routes SJ01, SJ02 and SJ03 have now resumed operations. He also said the Selangor government has requested MBSJ to conduct an internal audit so that all agencies can identify the root cause and weaknesses that led to the almost a month-long disruption of the Smart Selangor bus service in the city. 'The state government is aware that this disruption has caused inconvenience to users, including schoolchildren who rely on this service since its inception. Disruptions like this can erode public confidence in the state and national public transportation services and hinder efforts to promote the use of public transport overall,' he said. He added that the state government places great importance on providing free bus services for the people of Selangor, to facilitate public mobility.

Apad: Late applications behind Smart Selangor bus being halted

KUALA LUMPUR: The temporary suspension of the Smart Selangor bus service along five routes under the Subang Jaya City Council was not due to delays in processing the relevant applications, according to the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad). Instead, Apad said it was due to the late submission of applications by the operator, SKS Coachbuilders Sdn Bhd. In a statement, the agency said its investigation found that the company only submitted the relevant applications on April 25 and 26. Apad confirmed receiving five applications, all of which were processed under standard operating procedures, assessment criteria and approval conditions. They were then tabled at the Licensing Committee Meeting (eJKP) on May 8, receiving conditional approval. 'Apad stresses that the new permit applications were processed within 14 working days, in line with the agency's client charter. 'However, the applicant failed to meet several key requirements, including compliance with GPS installation standards and the submission of valid approval offer letters. 'As a result, conditional approval was granted, pending full compliance,' it said, Bernama reported. Apad confirmed that SKS Coachbuilders fulfilled all required criteria and conditions by May 15. The company received full approval at the eJKP meeting on May 22, following which they were authorised to begin printing the approval offer letters via Apad's iSPKP system from May 23. Residents and commuters in Subang Jaya were left inconvenienced by the sudden suspension of services on routes SJ01, SJ02, SJ03, SJ04 and SJ05, forcing many to seek alternative transport options and incurring additional costs. Claims had surfaced alleging that the disruption was due to delays by Apad in processing the operator's application, which reportedly took nearly two months. However, Apad clarified that the delay was due to the late submission and non-compliance with key requirements by the operator. Apad added that it remains committed to delivering fair and transparent licensing services. 'Therefore, all public and freight transport operators are reminded to strictly comply with the established criteria and conditions. 'Adherence is essential not only to safeguard their operations but also to prevent disruptions that adversely affect commuters who rely on these services daily,' the agency said.

Sudden suspension of Smart Selangor bus routes sparks public outcry

KUALA LUMPUR: The sudden suspension of five Smart Selangor bus routes in Subang Jaya earlier this month has provoked widespread frustration among residents, many of whom depend heavily on the free service for their daily journeys to work, school and healthcare facilities. This disruption has left commuters without clear alternatives, triggering a flood of complaints on social media and urgent calls for action from the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD). MBSJ announced the temporary suspension of the affected routes on May 2, but did not give a date for when services might resume, leaving thousands in uncertainty. Many working adults expressed how the suspension has thrown their daily routines into chaos, with no immediate alternatives readily available in the impacted areas. "MBSJ, can you provide an alternative for the SJ03 Smart Selangor bus that suddenly stopped? How am I supposed to get to work? "Please provide a solution as soon as possible. The Rapid KL On-Demand service does not even cover the Kinrara BK5 light rail transit (LRT) area," said user @HedayahDain on X. Another user, @iripann, lamented the increased cost of transport. "When will the Smart Selangor buses resume? It has been unbearable to pay for e-hailing services every day just to get to Serdang Hospital. "The Rapid KL On-Demand service costs RM4 per ride and only operates from 8am to 8pm. It is not practical at all." Some have questioned whether the service has been discontinued without prior notice. "Has the SJ03 bus stopped for good? I did not see it yesterday or today. I rely on it to get home from the LRT station as it is the only bus that serves my neighbourhood," another user said. Parents, educators and students have also voiced concern over the disruption to schooling, particularly affecting those in Puchong and Kinrara. "This has impacted Form Six students travelling from the BK5 LRT station to Batu 8. Today, they had to walk all the way to college. We urge the city council to find an immediate alternative," a Facebook user appealed. "Our students will be severely affected. Many live along the bus routes such as Taman Mawar, Puchong Jaya and Taman Kinrara. We hope the buses are reinstated as soon as possible," said user Francis Ng Chun Kia. "Please understand that the Smart Selangor bus is essential for students from BK5, Batu 8 and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Puchong Jaya (A). Nearly all of them rely on it," said another user, Chikta Kunan. Besides working adults and students, the elderly have also felt the impact of the suspension. "It was heartbreaking to see an elderly gentleman waiting in the heat. These buses need regular maintenance," said user @anisabdaziz_. Earlier, the New Straits Times reported that bus services on five Smart Selangor routes in Subang Jaya were suspended after the operator failed to submit permit applications on time and did not meet key licensing conditions, APAD said. APAD clarified that the disruption was not caused by processing delays, but by SKS Coachbuilders Sdn Bhd's late submission of applications, which were only received on April 25 and 26. The New Straits Times has contacted APAD for further comments but has yet to receive a response.
