Billie Lourd predicts her kids will love Smurfs movie

Billie Lourd's kids will "freak out" about her Smurfs role. The 32-year-old actress stars in the new animated movie alongside the likes of Rihanna, James Corden, Sandra Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, Octavia Spencer, Alex Winter, and Hannah Waddingham, and Billie is convinced that her kids will love the film. Billie - who has son Kingston, four, and daughter Jackson, two - told People: "I just love to do anything that they'll care about." The actress - who previously appeared as Lieutenant Connix in the Star Wars sequel trilogy - is "so excited" for her kids to watch the new movie. She said: "This might be my career peak because it's something that they're gonna freak out about, and I'm just so excited for them to watch it and love me more." Meanwhile, Rihanna - Billie's Smurfs co-star - is also delighted that her kids can now finally enjoy the movie. The chart-topping singer - who has RZA, three, and Riot, 23 months, with A$AP Rocky - recently told Extra: "We get to watch the movie together for the first time. I get to watch it in its full completion. So, that should be interesting. "Everybody gets to watch it on the 18th. So, we're really going for it now. It's finally being birthed." Rihanna explained that the film's premiere felt "so far away" when the project began. She said: "We've been working on it for so long. So, like, a few years now, actually. And it's happening … You know, you start working on something and 2025 feels so far away and then we're here." Rihanna's sons weren't aware of her involvement with the movie. However, the singer - who has largely put her music career on hold in recent years, in order to focus on other ventures - was looking forward to seeing the reaction of her boys. Asked if they knew that she was playing Smurfette in the film, Rihanna replied: "The boys know nothing, they're being introduced to Smurf Village right now, the blue carpet, and next is going to be me watching their reaction when they realise my voice is coming out of the screen. I can't wait for that one."

Rihanna thrilled to see Smurfs movie being 'birthed'

Rihanna is thrilled that Smurfs is "finally being birthed". The 37-year-old star voices the part of Smurfette in the new animated movie, and Rihanna is delighted that her kids can now finally enjoy the movie. The chart-topping singer - who has RZA, three, and Riot, 23 months, with A$AP Rocky - told Extra: "We get to watch the movie together for the first time. I get to watch it in its full completion. So, that should be interesting. "Everybody gets to watch it on the 18th. So, we're really going for it now. It's finally being birthed." Rihanna - who stars in the new movie alongside the likes of James Corden, Sandra Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, Octavia Spencer, Alex Winter, and Hannah Waddingham - admitted that the film's premiere felt "so far away" when the project began. She said: "We've been working on it for so long. So, like, a few years now, actually. And it's happening … You know, you start working on something and 2025 feels so far away and then we're here." Despite this, Rihanna's sons weren't aware of her involvement with the movie. However, the singer - who has largely put her music career on hold in recent years, in order to focus on other ventures - was looking forward to seeing the reaction of her boys. Asked if they knew that she was playing Smurfette, Rihanna replied: "The boys know nothing, they're being introduced to Smurf Village right now, the blue carpet, and next is going to be me watching their reaction when they realise my voice is coming out of the screen. I can't wait for that one." Rihanna was a Smurfs fan during her younger years, and Ramsey Naito, the president of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, thinks she's perfectly suited to the role of Smurfette. Ramsey recently told Variety: "When we first met with her, we learned that the Smurfs was her favourite show growing up, and from that moment, everything just clicked. "It felt completely natural to reimagine the Smurfs for today's audience with Rihanna as Smurfette because her genuine love for the franchise made her the perfect fit." Rihanna's "passion" for the Smurfs franchise actually shone through during the production process. The Paramount boss also observed that the film's "secret ingredient is love". Ramsey said: "I think when you're refreshing a beloved franchise like The Smurfs, the secret ingredient is love. And that love must come from people who truly care about the characters and their story. "Rihanna brought that passion, and it shines through in every part of the film."

5 reasons why Smurfs is the film of the summer

Code blue: everyone's favourite little creatures are about to take over the big screen, so get ready to 'Smurf' your pants. While you may be tempted by an escape to the sun this summer, you're guaranteed to have a better time packing a suitcase for Smurf Village! Smurfs is the live-action animated musical fantasy comedy film of the season, and not least because of what's shaping up to be a banging soundtrack. Ahead of its release in UK cinemas on July 18, let's dive into what exactly we have to look forward to – and why it's shaping up to be the family film of the summer… Ask any Rihanna superfan, and they'll tell you how eagerly they waited for the return of 'RiRi' to the recording studio. It's been almost a decade since her last album, and while there may be a bit more to wait 'til the next one, there's finally some new music for them to sink their ears into. One of the biggest names in music put her unique twist on the sound of the Smurfs, with hip-thrusting songs on the soundtrack. The internet was sent into a frenzy when the showstopping track 'Friend of Mine' dropped last month. Backed by a cool beat, the song captures the good vibes of the little blue besties. She'll be joined on the soundtrack by Tyla, Desi Trill featuring DJ Khaled, Cardi B and more, so there are plenty more blue-tastic beats to look forward to. Not only is Rihanna on the soundtrack, but she's also taking on one of the film's most iconic roles: Smurfette. Described by her as a 'little blue badass', the blonde powerhouse is sure to get audiences cheering. So, what's going down in Smurf Village? Well, when their peaceful community is sent into upheaval with the abduction of Papa Smurf (John Goodman), it's down to the little blue guys to venture into the real world to rescue him from evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel (JP Karliak). Leading the mission is the fearless Smurfette (Rihanna) and new guy on the block No Name (James Corden), who take charge of storming Razamel's castle and plan to take no prisoners… other than Papa, of course. And due to their tiny stature, this can't just be a solo mission. In their quest, they enlist the help of Papa's brother Ken (Nick Offerman) and the chaotic SnooterPoots, led by matriarch Mama Poot (Natasha Lyonne). With the help of their new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe. Joining film leads Rihanna and James Corden in the recording studio are some of the biggest names that Hollywood has to offer, from dramatic darlings to titans of comedy. Taking on the role of red-hatted patriarch Papa Smurf is Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award winner John Goodman. Not only has he starred in big-screen blockbusters and TV comfort watches, but he's also the voice behind some of your favourite animated characters. The list of famous voices continues with sitcom king Nick Offerman, streaming darling Xolo Maridueña, and a few others you may recognise… Expect to hear Kurt Russell, Sandra Oh, Nick Kroll, Octavia Spencer, Billie Lourde, Amy Sedaris, Dan Levy and even Kimmy Kimme in action. With so many hilarious performers on one cast, audiences are vibrating to hear what they bring to the recording booth. And it's not just Hollywood that's bringing its magic to the big screen – talent from this side of the pond are getting in on the action too. Triple threat Hannah Waddingham joins the cast as the witch Jezebeth. Some more surprising British voices are also set to grace your ears, from panel show staple Jon Richardson, West End maven Giovanna Fletcher and, wait for it… Rylan Clark! You'd be hard-pressed to find someone without a childhood memory of The Smurfs. The Belgian comic, created by Peyo back in the 50s, has worked its way into the hearts of millions across the globe over the past few decades. In Smurfs, not only will iconic characters like Smurfette, Papa Smurf and Gargamel be gracing the big screen, but they'll be joined by a roster of new characters like No Name – so named as he has yet to find what makes him unique. If you've ever wanted to see a mushroom village brought to life with the energy of a Saturday morning cartoon after three espressos, look no further. At the helm of this fantastical production is an icon of animation, director Chris Miller. Formerly a voice actor and animator, his creative mind is what brought us some instant classics like Shrek the Third to Puss in Boots. So rest assured, the blue characters are in safe hands. Production services on Smurfs were whipped together by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, while the animation muscle came courtesy of Cinesite, a dream team for all things blue, bouncy, and bizarre. Drawing inspiration from Peyo's original comics but with modern flair, it feels like The Smurfs have leapt off the page, stolen your popcorn, and just started doing backflips.

Rihanna (Kind Of) Returns To Music With New ‘Smurfs' Song

Source: Taylor Hill / Getty Rihanna fans, rejoice! The wait for new music is finally over (kind of). The music icon and Fenty mogul is lending her voice and vocals to the upcoming Smurfs animated film, and with it comes a brand-new track. Read more and catch the latest trailer inside. As revealed in the newly released trailer, Rihanna stars as Smurfette in the upcoming Smurfs movie, leading an all-star cast that includes John Goodman, James Corden, Sandra Oh, Nick Offerman, and more. The film follows the Smurf Village gang as they travel to the human world to rescue Papa Smurf from the clutches of the villainous Gargamel, voiced by J.P. Karliak. In a delightfully meta teaser, Rihanna is seen donning a blue jacket and blue beads as she records Smurfette's dialogue. She effortlessly blends into the Smurf universe while giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at her dual role as both voice actor and executive producer. Her new song titled 'Friend of Mine' featured in the trailer, is a dreamy, Afrobeats-inspired dance anthem that includes the infectious hook, 'You're looking like a friend of mine.' 'Friend of Mine' is Rihanna's first official release since her 2022 Oscar-nominated ballad 'Lift Me Up' from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Though it's not a full album or even her original song, the track gives fans a little something to hold them over. She hasn't released music since her LP, Anti, dropped nearly a decade ago in 2016. The Smurfs soundtrack promises even more musical firepower. In addition to Rihanna, South African breakout star Tyla and a collaborative track called 'Higher Love' by DJ Khaled, Cardi B, and DESI TRILL was released earlier this year and are part of the album. Rihanna first announced her involvement in the project at the 2023 CinemaCon, joking about recording in her third trimester. Now pregnant with her third child, she recently confirmed on the Met Gala red carpet that her pregnancy won't stop her from creating music, or perhaps, even shooting music videos. With The Smurfs set to hit theaters July 18, fans can expect a colorful adventure and a much-needed dose of Rihanna's magic, blue-hued and all. The track 'Friend of Mine' drops Friday, May 16.
