Puri Gajapati urges ISKCON not to violate Rath Yatra traditions

Bhubaneswar: The Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee in Puri has written to the ISKCON, urging it to ensure that Lord Jagannath's ceremonial bathing rituals and Rath Yatra across the world are performed on the specific date sanctioned by scriptures and not to violate traditions. Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb of Puri, the chairman of the committee, expressed displeasure over some of the ISKCON temples across the world performing the sacred bathing rituals ('Snana Yatra') and the Rath Yatra on various dates, and alleged that such practices 'violate the scriptures and the Hindu calendar'. In a letter to Shree Govardhan Das Prabhu, chairman of ISKCON Governing Body Commission, Mayapur, Deb said, 'I request your good self to ensure that no ISKCON temple or centre anywhere in the world performs the 'Snana Yatra' or 'Rath Yatra' of Lord Shree Jagannath on a date/tithi not sanctioned by scriptures and traditions.' Deb also claimed that the temples of the ISKCON authorities outside India are 'celebrating the 'Snana Yatra' (bathing rituals) and the Rath Yatra of Lord Shree Jagannath on dates/'tithis' not sanctioned in our sacred scriptures'. He also attached documents of some of the announcements in this regard posted by ISKCON temples. Deb pointed out out that such deviations are being made by ISKCON temples in New York City, Calgary and Leicester. In his letter, Deb mentioned that 'learned scholars of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (Puri) have thoroughly scrutinised the views put forward by ISKCON scholars at the meeting held at Bhubaneswar on March 20, 2025.' The scholars had reiterated their definite and firm conclusion that 'Snana Yatra' was to be celebrated only on Jyestha Poornima Tithi (that is, June 11 this year), while Rath Yatra (that is, Gundicha Yatra and Bahuda Yatra) would be performed only within the auspicious nine days from Asadha Shukla-paksha Dwitiya Tithi (that is, June 27 this year) to Asadha Shukla-paksha Dashami Tithi (that is, July 5 this year)', the letter mentioned. 'Performance of these most sacred yatras of the Lord Jagannath on any other tithi/date will be a violation of our sacred scriptures and ancient traditions,' the titular king of Puri said. In the letter to the ISKCON authorities, Deb, who is the first servitor of Lord Jagannath, also said, 'The detailed explanations in this matter submitted by our scholars will be sent to you shortly.'

Lakhs of devotees throng Lord Jagannath temple in Puri to witness 'Snana Yatra'

Bhubaneswar: Lakhs of devotees thronged to the sacred city of Puri in Odisha to witness the divine spectacle of 'Snana Purnima' or the 'Deva Snana Purnima', the ritual bathing of holy triad -- Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra -- at the famous Jagannath temple on Wednesday. This marks the beginning of the famous Rath Yatra, which is scheduled to begin from June 27 this year. On Wednesday, the servitors brought the deities from their sanctum sanctorum to the bathing platform 'Snana Vedi' in a grand procession called 'Pahandi Bije' ritual with the blowing of traditional musical instruments such as gongs, conch shells, etc. The holy siblings got bathed by the servitors with 108 pitchers of holy, fragrant water drawn from a mysterious well known as the 'Sunakua' or the 'Golden Well' inside the temple. After the ceremonial bath, the deities are decked up with specially made elephant masks popularly known as 'Gajanana Besha' or 'Hathi Besha'. Later, the deities return to the temple and are placed at 'Anasaragruha' (isolation room). It is said that the holy siblings suffer fever due to the bathing and remain out of bound for all, except Daita and Paita servitors. The idols of the three deities then make an appearance after 14 days of 'anasara' or quarantine in a new appearance known as "Naba Jaubana Darshana". On the auspicious occasion of Snana Purnima, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited Puri and offered prayers to Lord Jagannath on the 'Snana Bedi' (bathing altar). After witnessing the divine ritual, he proceeded to the Srimandir (Jagannath Temple) and later inspected the ongoing construction work of the chariots for the upcoming Rath Yatra. "I prayed to the Lord Jagannath for the happiness, peace and well being of people across the globe as well as Odisha. I also prayed for the smooth and hassle-free conduct of the upcoming Ratha Yatra festival," said CM Majhi. He also expressed satisfaction over the preparations by the district administration and servitors for the Snana Purnima rituals at Puri. The Puri Police has made elaborate arrangements for crowd control and to avoid any untoward incident during the Snana Yatra festival. As many as 70 platoons of police force and 450 officers have been deployed for security arrangements during the Snana Yatra.

Snana Purnima 2025: Today, on June 11, 2025, Puri, Odisha, is celebrating the holy festival of Snana Purnima with immense fervor and enthusiasm. The Jagannath Temple is hosting the ceremonial Snana Yatra of the holy trinity—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra—on this auspicious day. Jagannath Rath Yatra celebrations begin with this customary ceremony. Snana Purnima 2025: Date and Time Purnima Tithi Begins - June 10, 2025 - 11:35 AM Purnima Tithi Ends - June 11, 2025 - 01:13 PM Shukla Purnima Moonrise on Purnima - June 10, 2025 - 06:44 PM Snana Purnima 2025: Significance The Snana Yatra is an annual bathing festival that takes place on Purnima (the full moon day) in the month of Jyeshtha according to the Hindu calendar. On this occasion, devotees receive their first chance to have darshan of Lord Jagannath and receive his divine siblings at the Snana Mandap located within the sanctum of Shree Jagannath Temple. During Snana Purnima, a ceremonial bath is performed for Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. Furthermore, the Snana Yatra is also organized on this day and during this Yatra, the three deities, along with Sudarshan, come out from their sanctum to the Snana Mandap, which is positioned at Ananda Bazar within the temple complex. Mahaprabhu Jagannath is acknowledged as the lord of the universe, who is known as Lord Krishna, along with his brother Balarama and sister Subhadra. The term Jagannatha is quite descriptive, meaning the Natha of Jagat or God of the Universe. Snana Purnima 2025: Puja Rituals 1. According to the Skanda Purana, King Indradyumna is credited with establishing the temple at Puri, where he placed all three deities along with Sudarshan. He was also the first one to give them bathe. 2. During the Snana Yatra, the deities receive a ceremonial bath accompanied by the chanting of Vedic Mantras, the blowing of conch shells, and kirtans. 3. The priests perform the bathing ritual using 108 pitchers filled with water sourced from the well located at the Sitala temple near Lord Jagannath Temple. 4. Following the bath, the deities are adorned in the Gajanana (elephant) or Ganesha Besha, and their daily food offering, known as Bhogalagi, is prepared at the Snana Mandap. 5. After the Snana Yatra, the three deities are kept out of public sight for a period of 15 days, referred to as the 'Anasara' period. It is widely believed that the deities develop a fever after the ritual bath, which is why they do not return to the sanctorum. 6. Throughout this period, the deities are provided only with fruits and water, along with medicines (Dasamula) supplied by Raj Vaidya, the royal physician. 7. The deities are repainted with fresh colors during this time. 8. The daily rituals of the temple are temporarily suspended during this period. 9. On the 16th day, once the deities recover from their illness and regain their health, a festival known as Netrotsava or Nava Joubana Utsav (the festival of evergreen youth) is celebrated. 10. Following the celebration of this festival, devotees are permitted to enter the temple grounds and have darshan of the deities. Mantra Om Namo Bhagvate Vasudevaye..!!
