Breaking Down Quickly?
"It was my decision, fully conscious under no influence. I chose to end my life by jumping from the Signature Bridge, Delhi, early morning of 7th July. I feel like a failure and a burden, and it was getting unbearable to live like this. Hence, I decided to end it." This note is believed to have been written by DU student Sneha Debnath, who went missing on July 7 and whose body was found in the Yamuna. While investigations are on to ascertain if Debnath's death was a murder or a suicide, it's a fact that Gen Z is battling several mental health challenges. According to a Registrar General of India report of 2020-2022, nearly 17.1 per cent of total deaths in the 15-29 age group are suicides. Gen Z is free from many responsibilities—actively taking care of parents or building a home are not their pressures. So what is compelling them to take the fatal step? Counsellor Indu Punj believes one of the major reasons is repression at home and upbringing combined with social media pressures. 'Suicides can never be generalised; the reasons vary case by case. However, two reasons I find important here are—lack of emotional regulation right from foundation years and the increased nature of stress. Children are not raised in a manner where they are taught to handle emotions or adverse experiences,' she says.

Did not look depressed: Neighbour, cab driver recall 'last meet' with Tripura girl
Sneha Debnath did not look depressed and was rather calm, said the neighbour of the 19-year-old Delhi University student whose body was recovered from Yamuna River, almost a week after she went missing on July 7. A senior Delhi Police official confirmed the discovery and said her family had identified the body. Preliminary investigations indicate that Sneha, a native of Tripura and a resident of Delhi's Saket area, died by suicide after jumping off the Signature Bridge in Geeta Colony. Police also recovered a signed suicide note in which Sneha described herself as a "failure and a burden" and stated that life had become "unbearable." In the note, she mentioned that her decision was taken "fully consciously" and not under any influence. Despite the note, those who interacted with her shortly before she went missing described her as composed and calm. Her neighbour told IANS, "I never saw her tensed. When I met her on July 7, she seemed completely normal. She was talking to someone on the phone; the conversation also seemed normal. I last saw her around 5:15 a.m. when she took the cab." The same was mentioned by the cab driver who dropped her off at the Signature Bridge in Delhi's Geeta Colony on July 7. "I had picked her up at 5:15 a.m., and she had a ride of 45 minutes. I dropped her at the signature bridge. After the ride, she paid me Rs 523 online. She did not seem to be bothered. She asked if she could connect Bluetooth to play music. I said no but offered to play YouTube songs instead. She asked me to play any song I liked. She seemed relaxed," he told IANS. "About five minutes before the ride ended, she got a call. She told the caller she would call back after paying for the ride. She paid Rs 523 online and got off near the Signature Bridge. I took a U-turn after dropping her and didn't see her again, but I didn't suspect anything. There were people around, and there are also cameras in the area, though I don't know if they're functional," he added. The cab driver said that Sneha's sister contacted him around 2 p.m. that day. The police also questioned him and visited the drop-off location he had identified. The Delhi Police are now conducting a full-fledged investigation into the incident. Sneha's disappearance triggered concern across states. Her father, Pritthis Debnath, a military personnel, is said to be in constant touch with the Delhi Police. He had also reached out to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who expressed condolences and directed officials at Tripura Bhavan in New Delhi to assist the grieving family. "The Chief Minister has ordered a detailed probe into the incident. Senior Tripura Police officials are in touch with their counterparts in Delhi," an official from the CMO said. According to reports citing family sources, Sneha had left her home early on July 7 to receive a friend at Sarai Rohilla railway station. However, the cab she took dropped her off at the Signature Bridge instead. Her phone was switched off shortly after. A mathematics student at Delhi University, Sneha had not withdrawn any money from her account in recent months, and her bank balance remains untouched. Sneha's four-member family has been staying in Delhi for many years. Family members remain extremely concerned. She left home without any belongings and had not withdrawn money from the ATM in the past few months. Sneha's bank account remains untouched so far.

Delhi University Student Found Dead In Yamuna Was 'Overachiever': Family
New Delhi: Sneha Debnath, the 19-year-old Delhi University student whose body was recovered from the Yamuna last evening, was an overachiever pursuing two courses simultaneously and also working as an intern. Originally from Tripura, she had relocated to the national capital with many dreams and was working to fulfill them. Sneha was pursuing a four-year undergraduate course in Mathematics at Delhi University-affiliated Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College. Parallelly, she was pursuing a course in data science and programming with IIT Madras. According to her LinkedIn account, she was working as an intern with an Australian firm. In her LinkedIn bio, Sneha wrote she loves "talking about anything related to Mathematics, computer and the anime Monster". Her cousin said Sneha was respected within her family even though she was young. "She was pursuing two degrees simultaneously. She was earning, she did not want money from anybody," she said. The family described Sneha as a "overachiever". But this lively girl was upset over the past few months, according to her friends. The reason could be linked to her family, some reports have claimed. Sneha's father, Subedar Major (Honorary Lieutenant) Pritish Debnath (retired), is battling kidney failure and is undergoing dialysis. Her mother and sister, Bipasha, who were running from pillar to post after she went missing on July 7, were crushed after her body was found near the Geeta Colony flyover. When Sneha Left Home Sneha left her home in Delhi's Paryavaran Complex early on July 7. She told her mother that she was going to drop her friend at Sarai Rohilla Railway Station for a 6.45 am train. "Her mother's last contact with her was at 5.56 am. When we called again at 8.45 am, her phone was found switched off. We later learned that her friend had not met Sneha that morning," the family has said in a statement. When they managed to contact the cab driver, they learnt that he had dropped Sneha off at the Signature Bridge, which connects Wazirabad in north Delhi to the northeastern parts of the national capital. A Chilling Note When Sneha did not return home, the family started looking for her. They approached the police and a kidnapping case was registered. They also found a note in Sneha's handwriting. "It was my decision fully conscious under no influence, I chose to end my life by jumping from Signature Bridge, Delhi, early morning of 7th July. I felt like failure and a burden and it was getting unbearable to live like this, hence I decided to end it," she wrote. "It was no one's fault but mine and only mine. There is no foul play, this was all my decision," she added. A Harrowing Search Following Sneha's disappearance, her family ran from pillar to post to track her down. The search for Sneha led to a startling revelation. None of the 60 CCTV cameras in the vicinity of Signature Bridge were operational. The gap in CCTV coverage made the police's investigation very challenging as they struggled to track down the teen after she deboarded the cab. Speaking to NDTV yesterday, Sneha's sister Bipasha said the note makes no sense. "There is no clue. Why was was depressed? What was happening? Nothing. Just four lines. If she really wanted to die, lots of ways to do it at home or nearby. You don't have to go all the way to a place where 60 cameras are not working. Someone could have manipulated her," she said. The family also alleged police inaction. Hours later, the 19-year-old's body was found.
