Stonecroft: ‘Read the page before smoking it'

In addition to being a lay preacher and community worker Sohana Moodley is the regional control prosecutor at Port Shepstone Regional Court. The guest speaker at Stonecroft Ministries' June meeting, she said that in her 28 years as a prosecutor she has seen many criminals who had committed horrendous crimes. Early in her career, and as a Christian, she pondered whether or not certain people deserved mercy. God answered her by asking 'did she deserve mercy?' 'The mercy of God and the love of Jesus Christ extends to us all, even that one lost soul who needs to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ,' she said. Sohana referred to Genesis chapter 14, particularly verse 18, where the bread and wine in the midst of battles reminds us 'who we are, we belong to Jesus Christ'. Sohana began her ministry by praying with the prisoners, sharing the gospel, giving them bibles and soon colleagues joined in. She shared that in their most desperate of times they need to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ for salvation. She closed by sharing two of the many testimonies of changed lives. One man said that he would only use the bible pages for smokes, Sohana replied 'well, read the page before smoking it!' He did and by the time he had come to the end he was born again! Another had been most uncooperative during his trial but he accepted his bible and on completion of his five year sentence he visited her office to thank her, a completely changed man in Jesus Christ. The theme of the meeting was 'On Home Soil' and with that in mind, Taylor Herselman shared her extensive knowledge of indigenous plants. She said that her passion for plants started at an early age, helping her father in his nursery, and now she owns her own 'Buds on Wingate' in Margate. Taylor explained that indigenous plants are those native to South Africa which thrive in the sub-tropical climate of warm temperatures, high humidity and regular rainfall. Indigenous plants work with nature, not against it, having the advantage of providing food and habitat for the bees and birds. She spoke about the various varieties and said that contrary to perception they are very colourful. She concluded with an indigenous quiz, ably aided by her brother Matt who dashed around giving plants to the fortunate winners. Tea was the usual blend of noise and laughter while the guests enjoyed the treats served by the ladies of The Methodist Women's Auxiliary who month after month provide such high quality fare. After tea, Sue Neilson played a well chosen selection of praise and worship songs The next meeting will be at Shelly Beach Methodist Church on Friday, August 22 at 09:30. Public pressure awakens AAP's Mann govt from deep slumber

After years of neglect and repeated pleas, it was ultimately the efforts of local residents and religious volunteers that spurred the Punjab government into action. The long-deteriorated road from Chhappar Chiri Khurd to Chhapar Chiri Kalan —leading to the historic Gurdwara Sri Fateh Jang Sahib, built in the memory of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur's legendary Chappar Chiri battle against the Mughal Empire— has finally seen the beginning of renovation. The restoration work began on Saturday, thanks to the initiative of village residents, social workers, and prominent Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parvinder Singh Sohana. Following their efforts, the Punjab government Sunday officially commenced work on the road from the Kharar side. Welcoming the government's delayed yet decisive action, Sohana said, 'The government has finally woken up from its deep slumber. It's a praiseworthy move to allocate Rs 3.77 crore for the upgradation of the road leading to such a significant historical and religious site. 'Better late than never.' He added that the government's response only came after community members themselves began road repair work from Chhapar Chiri Kalan side. 'Only after the sangat, with our support, started the work yesterday did the government take notice. They have now acknowledged the issue and taken responsibility,' he said. Highlighting the urgency, Sohana stated that the annual Fateh Diwas is celebrated every May, and this year, the nagar kirtan is scheduled to begin from this location on May 12, en route to Fatehgarh Sahib. 'Considering the heavy footfall during these events, we started the roadwork on our own yesterday with the support of local panchayats and sangat,' he said. He said that numerous appeals had been made to the government earlier, but no action was taken until now. The SAD leader criticised the poor condition of link roads throughout the Mohali constituency. 'The state of all link roads in the Mohali area is deplorable. The government must now pay serious attention to infrastructure development so the public can get much-needed relief — and the administration can begin to fulfil its promises,' he said.

Historic Punjab's Chappar Chiri road crumbles, SAD leader warns govt of protest

The road connecting Mohali to the historic Fateh Minar and Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadur at Chappar Chiri is in an appalling condition, and should be repaired just days before a major religious gathering, said Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parvinder Singh Sohana. He requested the Punjab government for immediate repair of the Chappar Chiri -Mohali road as this road leads to a site of immense historical and religious significance, yet its current state exposes the hollow claims of the government's development model, said Sohana. The SAD leader highlighted that crores of rupees were spent by the previous Badal government to build Fateh Minar, a national symbol of Sikh valour, but the present regime has failed to maintain basic infrastructure around it. With the annual Sirhan Fateh Divas celebration of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur on May 12, Sohana cautioned that thousands of devotees will face difficulty unless urgent repairs are made. 'Despite repeated requests to the MLA over the last three years, no action has been taken. If repairs are not initiated immediately, we will be forced to protest,' he added. Sohana was joined by local leaders, including Sarpanch Sohan Singh Chappar Chiri, Shamsher Purkhalvi, Navjot Singh Jyoti, Sarpanch Gurpreet Singh Tangori, and others, who jointly appealed for immediate action. They urged the Punjab government to respect the religious and historical value of the site and act without delay to fix the road before the mass congregation.
