Holt McCallany Talks Partying With Tom Cruise, Returning To Netflix For ‘The Waterfront' & Gearing Up For His Directorial Debut

The Waterfront. Holt McCallany as Harlan Buckley in episode 102 of The Waterfront. Cr. Dana ... More Hawley/Netflix © 2025 To say Holt McCallany's career exploded following his breakout role in Netflix's Mindhunter would be an understatement. Less than a decade after playing FBI profiler Bill Tench opposite Jonathan Groff's Holden Ford in the acclaimed serial killer drama, the longtime character actor found himself at the exclusive Soho Farmhouse just outside London, celebrating Tom Cruise's 60th birthday alongside such entertainment luminaries as Jerry Bruckheimer, Anne Hathaway, Sam Mendes, and James Corden. 'There was a lot of love in the room,' he remembers over Zoom. 'Yeah, I suppose it would be easy to say that when you're the biggest movie star in the world and your films have made billions of dollars at the global box office, it inspires goodwill. But it was more than that. People had flown in from all over the world to be there at that party, and it really was a wonderful event.' The event was so wonderful, in fact, that McCallany, who was in the United Kingdom for the production of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (currently playing in theaters nationwide; click here for tickets), decided to go all-out for his own 60th celebration the following year at a classic Hollywood institution. 'I shared a car with Esai Morales [who plays The Final Reckoning's mysterious villain, Gabriel] on the way home and said to him, 'You know, man? I wasn't going to throw a party for my 60th, but now that I saw Tom's party, I know that I have to have a party.' Mine not was not quite as lavish. I did it at Musso and Frank, just because I happen to like that old school Hollywood vibe. I invited, just as Tom had done, people that had been with me since the beginning of my journey. And it was a really memorable evening, but had I not been invited to Tom's party, I probably wouldn't have had one of my own.' NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 18: Holt McCallany arrives at the US Premiere of "Mission: Impossible – The ... More Final Reckoning" at Lincoln Center Plaza in New York, New York on May 18, 2025. (Photo byfor Paramount Pictures) After decades of starring opposite A-listers like Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Jason Statham, Brad Pitt, Rami Malek, and Liam Neeson, and more McCallany says he's developed a nifty immunity to becoming starstruck. As such, sharing the same space as Cruise, Angela Bassett, and Nick Offerman for the latest Mission: Impossible (his second espionage-related project of 2025 after The Amateur) didn't seem as daunting as it might have been for an industry neophyte. 'When we get out there on the set, we're playing for the same team and you have your position to play,' he explains. 'If Tom Cruise is like the Tom Brady of movie stars, Tom Brady still needs somebody to throw the ball to. He still needs somebody to block for him. Filmmaking is a team sport … We're all actors and our job is to try to make this particular scene that we're shooting on this particular day as good as it can possibly be.' The Amateur and The Final Reckoning, however, were only the appetizers to McCallany's action-packed summer, which also includes the release of a brand-new Netflix series, The Waterfront (all eight episodes are now streaming). Created by slasher maven Kevin Williamson (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer), the engaging family crime drama molded in the vein of Ozark centers around a North Carolina fishing dynasty forced to smuggle drugs in order to keep itself afloat — no pun intended. 'Somebody said to me the other day in an interview, 'How would you feel if people compared the show to things like Ozark and Succession?'' shares McCallany. 'And I said, 'I'd be very flattered, because those are iconic shows and we should be so fortunate as to be considered in that category.'' Despite Williamson's horror background, the writer actually comes from a family of seafaring folk, hence the overtly maritime setting and hook-handed villain of I Know What You Did Last Summer. 'He's been very open about the fact that his father was, at one time, involved in smuggling — I think it was marijuana — back in the '80s. Of course, now people buy marijuana at the corner store, but it wasn't like that in those days," says McCallany, who plays Harlan, the grizzled and booze-swigging patriarch of the Buckley clan: wife Belle (Maria Bello), son Cane (Jake Weary), and daughter Bree (Melissa Benoist). 'A lot of the the experiences that Harlan has are drawn from that. It's kind of semi-autobiographical in a way,' notes the actor. "So I felt an responsibility to really do the character justice. I always feel that. I never want a writer or a director to feel like, 'Oh, I got the wrong guy,' or, 'This guy didn't understand the character,' or 'This guy gave me a performance, but it wasn't the performance that I wanted.'" While he's taken a step back from day-to-day operations in recent years, Harlan (whose methods are ruthlessly old school) is forced to intervene when his son's recklessness not only draws suspicion from DEA Agent Marcus Sanchez (Gerardo Celasco) but the ire and interest of dangerous criminals like Topher Grace's Grady. 'I liked the way that Harlan was written and Kevin seemed to like the way that I was playing him,' adds McCallany. 'And so, we had this very easygoing kind of relationship, which I was grateful for because above all else, I wanted the experience of shooting The Waterfront to be fun. I really liked the other people in the cast. I love the little town of Wilmington, North Carolina [where we shot] … With a show like Mindhunter, we were always delving into the psychological underpinnings of sexually-motivated homicides and these gruesome murders … It was heavy stuff. It was dark. And this is a different kind of a show. It's lighter. It's a crime drama. It's a family drama, yes, but it has humor and it has sex appeal. I think it's got a little bit of something for everyone." Even with a plethora of acting opportunities on his plate, McCallany has impressively found the time to prep his directorial debut, an American remake of the 1995 Italian film The Star Maker by Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso). In addition to serving as director, the actor also co-wrote the screenplay with collaborator Noel Lawrence and input from David Fincher (whom McCallany has worked with three times since 1992). 'We spent two years in script revisions with David and the thing became exponentially better by an order of magnitude,' he teases. 'In the past, whether it was Alien 3, Fight Club, or Mindhunter, I was always working as an actor-for-hire, for David. So you come in, the script is written, the project is already cast, the locations are chosen, and you just have your responsibilities as an actor to execute. It's very different when you come with a piece of material and say, 'Hey, how about this?' I was just really fortunate that he happened to like the thing that I had chosen, so he gave me a lot of his time. That was really valuable to me.' My skin smelt like burnt bacon during £2k celeb laser treatment – I'm glowing but there was stomach-churning side effect

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THANKS to the wonders of Instagram, 'The Cloud' and Facebook, I am constantly reminded how wonderful life was back when I had collagen. And how (relatively) wonderful I looked when I had collagen: banks and banks of the stuff giving my young, happy little face that unmistakable glow of youth. 8 Clemmie tested out a CO2 laser treatment to rejuvenate her tired skin 8 A machine blasts a burst of hot pulsing light on Clemmie's face 8 Clemmie shows off her 'glow' after the tweakment popular with celebs Credit: Lorna Roach Thanks to two decades of sunbathing (and a few sunbeds), that collagen has depleted quicker than you can say 'pigmentation' – which I also had a lot of. And this despite a recent facelift which, while undoubtedly brilliant at successfully halting the tide of ageing disintegration, did not address the actual texture or quality of my skin. Enough was enough. So, like all good millennials, I took to Dr Google... and promptly booked in for a CO2 laser, a treatment popular with celebs including Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow. In LA, the home of good skincare, facelifts and CO2 facelifts are synonymous – surgeons regularly book their clients for laser treatments as part of the aftercare package, such is the possible transformation. Some of the results looked mildly terrifying – people with peeling faces, scabs oozing pus and flaking skin. Unwilling to leave my skin to fate, or the hands of a dentist-turned-Botoxer, I booked in at London's exclusive Harley Street Injectables. Clinic boss Alice Henshaw – who actually works with the surgeon who did my face, Dr Paul Tulley in London's Harley Street – had contacted me previously after reading about my op. (Yep, tweakments aren't my first rodeo). She is a highly rated aesthetician to many celebs and a whole raft of influencers, who regularly live Instagram from her clinic. Walking into the uber-plush clinic – it felt more Soho Farmhouse than an aesthetic practice (although both serve little pricks) – I was greeted by Stevie, an aesthetic nurse, who would be CO2-ing me. Clemmie Moodie Facelift Journey After being numbed for 30 minutes with anaesthetic cream – quite simply, the pain would be intolerable without it – she goes through my skin concerns. 'This is genuinely one of the best treatments out there,' Stevie reassures me. 'It's amazing for acne scarring, sun damage and for boosting collagen production to give the skin a plumper, more youthful glow. You're going to really see a difference. 'It's an ablative laser which causes controlled damage to the upper layers of the skin, stimulating the skin's natural healing process and helping produce new collagen. 'We're going to go for quite an aggressive setting today to maximise results.' Next thing I know I'm horizontal, with a machine blasting a burst of hot pulsing light on my skin. Seconds later, there's a waft of burning. 8 The CO2 laser goes round the face and under the eyes 8 Clemmie, pictured before the treatment, says her recent facelift did not help with the actual texture of her skin Credit: Dan Charity 'What's that smell?' I ask, my thoughts briefly turning to what I'll have for dinner. 'Oh yes, that's your skin,' Stevie replies, casually, as I inhale a whiff of bacon. Having never had a laser treatment before, I really don't know what to expect. The following day I look like I've swallowed a football, and my face is beetroot red It feels like an elastic band is being pulled taut and then snapped on my face, hard, and repeatedly. It's fine on my forehead, but REALLY hurts on my upper lip. My eyes start watering and I'm trying – and failing – to look sanguine as cameraman Ben blithely zooms in on my increasingly red face. The sensitive neck area also smarts a bit – a solid 7.2/10 for pain (10 being 'give me a gun now', 0 being a nice massage at Soho Farmhouse) – but Stevie counts down throughout, reassuring me I'm doing 'great'. (TBH all I'm doing is lying still, but it's sweet and I am determined not to swear.) 'F***!!!' I promptly scream as she goes in beneath my eyes. For this, I am given two in-eye lenses to prevent any radiation from getting through. Ben is also given dark glasses to stop any radiation 'bounce', too. 'Not for the faint-hearted ' Thankfully, within 20 minutes, it's all over. I'm red, but won't scare small children on the Tube home. Alice packs me off with a bespoke aftercare kit – an ice pack, her own range of Factor 100 sun cream, 5DHA hyaluronic acid serum, a lux moisturiser and some Skincycles bio-cellulose sheet face masks to help with hydration. I am told to avoid all sunshine for the next couple of weeks, which comes in handy for the start of the spring heatwave the following day. I look certifiably insane walking the dog in a polo neck, sunglasses and a Ted Lasso visor – the only hat I could find – in the blazing sunshine. The following day I look like I've swallowed a football, and my face is beetroot red. I cancel lunch with friends. Happily, my skin doesn't blister and there are no signs of pus. (Google Love Island's Alexandra Crane's CO2 experience if you're not eating.) From here, the redness begins to fade and I am just left with weird-looking 'grids' across my face. My skin feels like sandpaper. Day by day though, I start to see results. After three weeks, people start complimenting me on my 'glow' One week later, my pigmentation is significantly reduced – with the full effects seen in 12 weeks time – and my skin looks so, so much softer, plumper and, well, like it used to in my iPad memories circa 2017. There are fewer fine lines around my eyes and I am thrilled. After three weeks, people start complimenting me on my 'glow' and I even get away with not wearing any make-up to work. It's a joy. This non-invasive treatment, costing £2,000, isn't for the faint-hearted. But, well, it works. Trent Alexander-Arnold slammed as he goes public with new girlfriend

Trent Alexander-Arnold was presented as a Real Madrid player on Thursday and introduced his girlfriend to the world, but the press conference has been overshadowed by the right-back's new language skills England footballer Trent Alexander-Arnold used his unveiling as a Real Madrid player to go public with girlfriend Estelle Behnke. The 26-year-old right-back sat next to his model partner as he was presented to Spanish media and introduced himself to Real Madrid fans. Trent, who previously dated actor Jude Law's daughter Iris, has been in a relationship with Esetelle since October 2024. She boasts more than 75,000 followers on Instagram and recently posted pictures from a trip to Beverly Hills. ‌ Last year, the happy couple enjoyed a romantic getaway at the exclusive £6,000-per-night Soho Farmhouse in the Cotswolds and were also seen dining at the celebrity favourite Cibo in Hale, Cheshire. ‌ Trent and his new flame turned heads as their shared location tags at an exclusive members' club in the Cotswolds sparked romance rumours. Eagle-eyed supporters had already picked up on signals of blooming love between the two following individual holiday posts. And the relationship was confirmed on Thursday when Estelle joined the Trent's family to watch his press conference at Real Madrid City, Madrid, and sported a stunning in a white one-shoulder dress. But, in what should have been a great day for the footballer, both personally and professionally, has been tainted due to a social media storm over Trent's new language skills. The 26-year-old England international, who signed a six-year deal with the Spanish giants after his contract with English champions Liverpool expired, spoke fluent Spanish confidently at his official presentation ahead of a press conference. His choice to speak in the language of his new club and not English surprised many, but showed the preparation which had gone into this move, something for which he was criticised by sections of the Liverpool fanbase after running down his contract with his hometown club. ‌ "A SCOUSER speaking fluent spanish? lmaooo trent has been plotting and preparing for this move since the summer of 2022," one Twitter (X) used commented as the clip of Trent went viral. "Nah Trent was speaking intermediate level Spanish. He has been planning to leave for YEARSSS LOOOOOOOOOOOL," another mused, with a third fuming: "Trent cost his boyhood club the winning goal in a Champions League final and immediately started learning Spanish to help orchestrate a move to the club he'd just lost too, don't let anyone tell you he's not a rat." Acknowledging that many - including former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp - criticised Reds fans for booing Trent during one of his final games for the club after confirming his exit, another Twitter (X) user wrote: "LOOOOOOL na we all need to apologise to Liverpool fans because Trent is all of a sudden fluent in Spanish???? I am so sorry Liverpool fans." ‌ Trent admitted during his presentation that Real Madrid was the only team he would have left boyhood club Liverpool for and was comfortable he made the right decision. The 26-year-old, who has signed a six-year deal after Real Madrid paid £8.5million to release him from a contract expiring this month, rejected suggestions he had been heavily influenced by close friend and England team-mate Jude Bellingham. ‌ He also denied he had been orchestrating the move for a long time but impressing president Florentino Perez and assembled club dignitaries by surprisingly addressing them in Spanish did nothing to calm the anger a significant section of the fanbase have felt about the way he handled his exit after 20 years at Liverpool. 'To be honest, it was never a question of where, it was whether to go or not to go but I always knew, I've probably known it for a long time, if I was ever to leave Liverpool, it would only be to go Real Madrid, that would be the only club for me,' said Trent, who told a press conference he had been learning Spanish 'for a few months'. 'Then it gets to a point where you have to make a decision whether to go or stay and making that decision was not an easy decision because I'd been there so long, but eventually you have to make a decision and in my mind, I've made the right one.'

TALK OF THE TOWN: Gardening guru who helped David Beckham grow his friendship with King Charles

After the announcement that David Beckham will be awarded a knighthood in King Charles 's Birthday Honours, I can reveal one unsung hero in helping the former footballer secure his title: a glamorous blonde gardener who Becks calls 'my lovely Carly'. It's no secret that Beckham, 50, has bonded with King Charles over a shared love of gardening. Indeed, at the Chelsea Flower Show last month, the King was overheard asking the former England captain if he liked his 50th birthday present he had sent him – a new rose bush. Beckham was also recently invited by Charles to Highgrove, his Gloucestershire country pile, where the pair talked about another common gardening interest, beehives. All of which cannot fail to have helped Beckham in the months leading up to the announcement of his upcoming knighthood. But today I can disclose that his stunning Costwolds garden has a secret weapon behind the scenes: Carly Holmes, the former gardener at Soho Farmhouse, the celeb haunt beloved by the Beckhams and a stone's throw from the family's front door. Carly was head gardener there for four-and-a-half years from January 2019 to May 2023. A few months later she popped up as head gardener for DVB – David and Victoria Beckham's company – tending the gardens at their 40-acre estate. Carly's work is seldom mentioned on Beckham's Instagram feed, which documents his vegetable garden in forensic detail. Posh and Becks taking on Soho Farmhouse's head gardener comes after their triple-barn conversion was also decorated to match the decor of the members' club when it was built eight years ago. 'Their house in just like a mini-Soho Farmhouse – even the gardens now match,' said an insider. It's tardy Tina She's the mother of pop icon Beyonce, so maybe we can forgive Tina Knowles some diva habits of her own. I hear the businesswoman arrived an hour late to an event with Stella McCartney at London's Southbank Centre last week, with fans teased with Beyonce songs on the speakers until she arrived! When the talk finally began, Tina asked Sir Paul McCartney's daughter about the 'nepo baby' tag. 'I got that for the majority of my career,' Stella says. 'When I first started, the headlines were, 'She got by with a little help from her friends' – but not any more.' Isla's life's a joke Her ex-husband is supposed to be the comedian, but actress Isla Fisher, has been making jokes about her split from Sacha Baron Cohen after 14 years of marriage. The 49-year-old Australian shared a study on her Instagram account that revealed 'marriage may significantly increase your risk of dementia' and wrote in the caption: 'Every cloud...' Let's hope her 53-year-old ex – who found fame through his characters Ali G and Borat – sees the funny side as they battle over their shared £120 million fortune. It's Sophie, queen of the curtsies Everyone knows the King and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh are great friends – so His Majesty saw the funny side when she almost forgot to curtsy to him at Royal Windsor Flower Show. Chuckling in front of the cameras, our exclusive pictures show the Duchess kissing her brother-in-law the King on the cheek, followed by a quick curtsy which made her almost lose her balance. Thank goodness the laughing monarch was there to steady the Duchess! No big pants for Romy! Bridget Jones author Helen Fielding has some vv good news – her daughter Romy is a supermodel in the making, with the willowy 18-year-old, right, having been signed up by the New York agency DNA Models. Romy, whose father was Helen's late partner, Kevin Curran, has been sharing sneak peeks of recent shoots – including one in Central Park. More Carrie Bradshaw than Bridget Jones! Take two for Toff wedding party Georgia Toffolo left many friends high and dry when she gave just 24-hours' notice of her wedding to BrewDog tycoon James Watts, 43, in March. Few could make the last-minute trip to Aberdeenshire for the low-key nuptials, which were followed by the couple, above, posing for photos on a fishing boat. But now I can reveal that the 30-year-old Made In Chelsea star is planning a major celebration for all her nearest and dearest who missed the big day. I trust this time, it'll all be on dry land!

Michelle Keegan cradles baby Palma on birthday holiday with Mark Wright

Michelle Keegan and Mark Wright stepped out for a stroll with their newborn baby girl Palma on Michelle's 38th birthday. The former TOWIE star, 38, and Brassic actress welcomed daughter Palma Elizabeth Wright on March 6, taking to social media earlier this month to share the happy news. Alongside a black and white photo of them holding their newborn's tiny hand on, the couple penned: 'Together we have a new love to share … Our little girl. Palma Elizabeth Wright… 06.03.25.' The new parents recently took their little one on her first holiday at Soho Farmhouse, a member's club and hotel in Chipping Norton, which Mark posted snaps of to his Instagram. Michelle and Mark have now taken Palma further afield, as Michelle rang in her 38th birthday under the Spanish sun. The couple were pictured spending quality time with Palma in Marbella, with Michelle cradling their newborn in her arms as she took a walk in a white floral applique co-ord from her Very collection, paired with sandals. Palma was wearing a butter yellow one piece, while Mark cut a sharp contrast to the pair of them in all black. The couple have been married for ten years and Mark recently detailed their decision to wait to have children, while the pair both focused on their careers. The former reality star said: ''It's a very special feeling. I can't really put it into words. We've waited a little bit of time, we've chased our dreams and our careers and now we're here. We've got a baby.' Mark has also shared his delight at being a first-time dad, speaking about the first time he held his daughter. 'That moment when I held her in my arms, it gets me emotional now thinking about it,' he added. More Trending 'It's a very special feeling. I can't really put it into words. Mark added: 'I suppose everything else goes out the window and its made me realise what life is all about and my little baby Palma I love you so much and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you.
