Gujarat Congress camp: Rahul Gandhi blames ‘biased umpire' ECI for poll defeats; slams BJP-RSS ‘control'
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday (July 26, 2025) assured the district unit chiefs of his party in Gujarat that their opinions will be taken into account while selecting poll candidates. Mr. Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, during his address at the Congress' district presidents' training camp under the 'Sangathan Sujan Abhiyan' (campaign to strengthen the party organisation), also slammed the Election Commission for being "biased" and asserted it was important to defeat the BJP in its "main base" of Gujarat. The party has organised the camp for the newly-appointed presidents of District Congress Committees at a resort near Anand city in view of the 2027 state assembly elections. The camp, aimed to prepare a road map for the party's Mission 2027, will conclude on July 28. Mr. Gandhi guided the district presidents and assured that the leadership is fully with the party workers, Gujarat Congress chief Amit Chavda told reporters after the meeting. "Rahul Gandhi asked us to take up issues concerning people. He assured that city and district unit chiefs will be consulted before candidates for various elections are chosen," Rajkot Congress chief Rajdeepsinh Jadeja said. Another leader said Gandhi used cricketing terms to accuse the Election Commission of India of being a "biased umpire", because of which the Congress has been losing elections. "In cricket, if you get out time and again, you can start doubting yourself. But then you realise you are getting out not because of your fault. It is the umpire who is biased. Rahul ji said this and gave us confidence. He asserted we lost the 2017 Gujarat polls due to the ECI's dubious voters' list," the Congress' Surendranagar district chief Naushad Solanki said. "Rahul ji emphasised it was very important to defeat the BJP in its main base of Gujarat. He told us the party used to believe that we must work hard (to defeat the BJP) in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and some other states. He said if we can defeat the BJP in Gujarat, then the party can be defeated everywhere," Solanki added. In another example, the LoP in Lok Sabha likened the nation to a temple where everybody can come and pray, but the BJP-RSS is controlling who gets what as "prasad", Solanki said. "They (BJP-RSS) decide what is to be given if a SC, ST or OBC comes and if Adani or Ambani comes," Solanki said quoting Gandhi. Later at around 3 p.m., Mr. Gandhi will hold a discussion with cooperative sector leaders and dairy farmers who are members of various cooperative milk unions or dairies. This meeting is being held in the backdrop of recent protest organized by the dairy farmers outside Sabar Dairy in Himmatnagar town of north Gujarat over the issue of milk procurement prices. In a bid to strengthen the party's organisation at district levels ahead of 2027 state assembly elections, the Congress party had recently appointed new presidents of all the District Congress Committees.

July 19, 1985, Forty Years Ago: Gujarat Accord
The anti-reservation agitation in Gujarat is likely to be withdrawn following an agreement between the government and anti-reservation leaders. The Amarsinh Chaudhary government has agreed not to implement the Solanki cabinet's decision to increase the reservation quota of non-Harijan and non-Adivasi backward-class students for admission in medical and technical institutions to 28 per cent. Pakistan is coordinating its military activities with China in a bid to capture the strategic Siachen Glacier in Ladakh. Pakistani and Chinese air force jet fighters recently conducted joint reconnaissance missions over the glacier and the Indian Nubra Valley. Defence experts say Pakistan is trying to secure advantageous positions in the glacier to secure a common border with China to facilitate a closer military link-up in the event of a war with India. Safarnama, the new TV serial presented at the initiative of the railway ministry, has been derailed. Doordarshan authorities have decided to suspend it on the ground that the third episode was 'not only below standard but vulgar in dialogue at places'. The move has caused surprise in Rail Bhavan, where officials point out that Doordarshan brought the alleged vulgarity to their attention only after the telecast. The ongoing tussle between the Congress (I) and Congress (S) for office accommodation in Parliament House took a serious turn when the former made an unsuccessful bid to 'capture' the adjoining Congress (S) office. After removing all sign boards of the Congress (S) office, Congress (I) men allegedly broke open the connecting door between the two party offices and took away some files and papers.

Gambhira bridge collapse VADODARA: A week after the Gambhira bridge collapse tragedy, which claimed 20 lives, truck driver Ganpat Solanki , who cheated death and rescued a drowning man, was discharged from the state-run SSG Hospital on Wednesday. As Solanki, 40, a native of Udaipur, Rajasthan, walked out of the govt hospital, he appealed to the Gujarat govt to provide more financial assistance to his family. On July 9, the driver displayed rare courage and used presence of mind after he survived the 50-foot plunge from the collapsed bridge into the Mahi River. He managed to rescue Narendra Parmar from drowning. Parmar, however, succumbed during treatment at the hospital on Friday last. 'I feel sorry that he did not survive even after he was rescued. May God bless his soul and help his family,' said Solanki, who was driving a tanker from Dahej to Kandla and slowed down while crossing the bridge when he suddenly felt a jolt. After his truck got submerged in the Mahi River, Solanki at first did not realise that the bridge collapsed. But after regaining consciousness, he broke the tanker's window, escaped, and found a spot under the bridge pillar for safety. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Get ₹2Cr life cover@ ₹700 p.m. ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo It was then that he spotted Parmar, who was struggling in the water just beside the pillar. After getting discharged, Solanki thanked doctors at the hospital, which he said were like God for people like him. 'I just want to appeal to the govt to kindly provide more assistance as I have four girls in my family. The govt can also intervene, asking my company to provide me some assistance,' said Solanki, who works with an Odhav-based transport firm in Ahmedabad. With Solanki getting discharged, there are two other injured currently undergoing treatment at SSG Hospital. 'While Raju Hathiya is being treated at the orthopaedics ward, another patient, Dilip Padhiyar, who developed a lung infection, is currently in the surgical intensive care unit. Their condition is stable,' said Dr Hitendra Chavan, RMO of SSG Hospital, told TOI.
