Thailand orders heightened vigilance after bomb scare in the south
Police found an improvised time bomb in a car being driven from Songkhla to Phuket earlier this week. (Phuket information centre pic) BANGKOK : All Thai government agencies have been placed on high alert and urged to heighten vigilance following recent bomb threats in the southern tourist provinces of Phuket and Phang Nga. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said reports from relevant agencies suggested that the incidents were attempts to create unrest in the region. The prime minister convened a meeting with the national police chief, the commander of the tourist police, and the permanent secretary of the tourism and sports ministry to assess the situation. 'Every precautionary measure has been implemented to ensure public safety and prevent harm. However, the government remains vigilant. The National Security Council will continue to oversee and intensify operations,' she said on social media. Earlier this week, Thai media reported that a car travelling from Songkhla to Phuket was stopped in Phang Nga, where police found a homemade time bomb and arrested two suspects. Suspicious devices were later found in Phuket and Krabi, including near the airport. Though the devices caused no injuries and lacked destructive capabilities, they raised security concerns in the region. Police bomb squads confirmed that the objects were designed to resemble explosive devices, likely intended to instil fear and disrupt normal activities.

Abby Abadi lets daughter manage her own personal life
26 Jun - Abby Abadi is no longer interested to make any comments regarding her daughter Marissa Dania and her marriage to Ahmad Aslam. The 48-year-old singer, who was asked about their relationship recently, said that she will let Marissa deal with her own personal life. "It's her choice. Let her face it on her own. If it's good for her, it will continue. But if it's the opposite, let's just see what will happen. That's all that I can say," she said. Abby said that it doesn't matter if she was vocal about the issue, seeing that it doesn't change anything. "I am okay with Marissa. She is my daughter after all. We don't want things to turn worse. Let us have space to calm down," she added. It was back in April that Abby decided to express her ire on the issue of Marissa and Aslam, who eloped and tied the knot in Songkhla back in 2023. The couple were slammed due to the fact that Aslam already has a wife. The frustration that Abby expressed stemmed from a comment on social media telling her to apologise to Aslam's first wife, Umisya. The singer immediately responded that it is Aslam who should be apologising to her for creating the problem in the first place. (Photo Source: Abby Abadi IG, Marissa Dania IG)

OCM shortlists CDM, deputy picks for Thailand SEA Games; Norza says logistics key factor
KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) has drawn up a shortlist of candidates for the posts of Chef de Mission (CDM) and Deputy CDM for the SEA Games in Thailand in December. OCM president Tan Sri Mohd Norza Zakaria said he would be meeting Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh today to discuss the matter before a final decision is made. 'The issue now concerns logistics, as we know the SEA Games will be held in three locations — Songkhla, Chonburi and Bangkok. So I think we will discuss appointing one CDM and a few deputies. 'We will look at three or four personalities, and it will be a combination of an OCM administrator, a former athlete and representatives from the NSAs (National Sports Associations),' he said when met yesterday. Previously, the National Sports Council (NSC) had urged OCM to expedite the appointment of the CDM, Deputy CDMs and team managers for the Thailand SEA Games. NSC director-general Jefri Ngadirin explained that early appointments are crucial to ensure planning and coordination can be carried out in a more organised manner, especially with NSAs and other stakeholders. Norza also hinted that a new design may be used for the national contingent's official attire at the biennial Games. According to him, OCM will sit down with the NSC to discuss a suitable outfit design for the national contingent. — Bernama

China doubles down on building telescopes in Thailand to monitor Earth using space signals
China has completed its first overseas new-generation radio telescope in northern Thailand , bolstering a global scientific network that monitors deep space signals and tracks subtle shifts in the Earth's rotation and tectonic plates. Advertisement The 13-metre (43-foot) radio antenna, jointly developed by the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory and the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, was officially inaugurated in Chiang Mai on May 16, according to the observatory's WeChat account. Together with a second telescope under construction in Songkhla, southern Thailand, the station will enhance deep-space tracking and high-precision Earth monitoring, contributing to more accurate GPS, climate research and earthquake forecasting. 11:05 Space race elevates Asia in new world order Space race elevates Asia in new world order Ding Chibiao, vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, described the Chiang Mai telescope as 'a role model of scientific cooperation between China and Thailand'. During the inauguration ceremony, he said its launch held special significance as the two countries marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Supachai Pathumnakul, permanent secretary of Thailand's higher education and science ministry, said the telescope reflected the growing scientific partnership between the two nations and would deliver high quality data for global research efforts. According to the Shanghai observatory, the project began with a memorandum of understanding in 2017. After years of delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic , the telescope captured its first signal in August last year.
