Tots and Tales: Sonic partners with authors for new summer menu items
Sonic Drive-In has partnered with authors on its newest menu craze - and introduced new drinks to help cool you down. . Bestselling authors Ashley Poston, Abby Jimenez, and the writing duo Christina Lauren are teaming with Sonic for its campaign, celebrating summer reads and sweet drinks. The fast food chain is introducing a new line of Sweet Topped Lemonades, aiming to refresh customers while promoting literacy among children. The new drinks come in three flavors: Classic Lemonade, Strawberry Lemonade, and Blueberry Lavender Lemonade. Each drink features Sonic's signature lemonade topped with a sweet cold foam. Early access to the new drink through the Sonic App began on Tuesday. These new drinks are available nationwide starting June 2. The campaign supports education by helping provide 100,000 books to underserved kids through its Limeades for Learning initiative, with proceeds from all drink sales funding the effort. Poston is the bestselling author of romance novels such The Seven Year Slip and The Dead Romantics, and is set to release her latest book, Sounds Like Love, on June 17. "Summer has always been synonymous with books in my head, required reading, midnight releases and audiobooks on long road trips," Poston said in a news release. "To me, there is nothing more quintessentially summer than a sweet topped classic lemonade and a steamy read. Now excuse me while I go kick back in my hammock and sink into a romance to quench my thirst for refreshing meet-cutes and sugar-sweet happily ever afters." Jimenez, known for titles such as Just for the Summer and Yours Truly, released her latest novel, Say You'll Remember Me, in April. "I write stories that make you laugh, cry and maybe believe in love again," Jimenez said in a news release. " Sweet topped lemonades may make you feel that way too. Blueberry lavender is sweet, a bit unexpected and completely swoon-worthy. Whether you're reading on the beach or just need a little moment of joy in your day, this flavor is the perfect escape." Christina Lauren, the pen name of writing duo Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, is known for bestselling books such as The Paradise Problem, Love and Other Words and the Beautiful series. 'As lifelong book lovers, we'll always jump at the opportunity to foster a love of reading," Hobbs and Billings said in a news release. "Some of our best memories are from hot summer days spent getting lost in a book. What better way to spend the summer this year than reading with a sweet topped strawberry lemonade and supporting public education all at the same time?" Other Sonic arrivals just in time for summer include new Cheesy Garlic Pepperoni Bites and the limited-time return of the beloved Watermelon and Lemonberry Slushes. Loyal Sonic fans can now grab half-price milkshakes — and that's just the start of summer deals. Sonic Drive-In is serving up sweet summer savings — starting with half-price shakes every day after 5pm at participating locations nationwide. Customers can cool off with seven classic flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, caramel, hot fudge, and peanut butter. But milkshakes aren't the only treat Sonic lovers can look forward to. The chain is also bringing back fan-favorite slushes after a wave of online demand. Starting May 27, rewards members can order the beloved Watermelon Slush, returning after a viral petition, for just $2.79. The Lemonberry Slush — back for the first time since 2020 — will also make its comeback, starting at $3.29. Both slushes roll out to all customers on June 2. In addition to drink returns and specials, Sonic Drive-In is debuting its all-new Cheesy Garlic Pepperoni Bites, starting at $2.99 next week. Other chains are rolling out deals this month. Applebee's All You Can Eat (AYCE) specials are back in restaurants nationwide from yesterday. Houston man sues Whataburger for up to $1 million after putting onions on his burger
A Houston man is suing fast food chain Whataburger, claiming he suffered an allergic reaction to onions on a burger – despite ordering the meal with no onions. Demery Ardell Wilson says he had such a bad allergic reaction to the onions while dining at one of the restaurant's chains on June 24 that he had to seek medical attention. Wilson claims he took one bite of his meal and immediately tasted onion – which was enough to cause an allergic reaction, Moneywise reported. He filed a lawsuit against Whataburger on April 25, seeking 'monetary relief over $250,000 but less than $1,000,000,' after asking for a meal with no onions, the court filing states. In the petition, Wilson says he suffered 'serious personal injuries' as a result of the incident and was forced to 'seek the care of medical professionals.' Wilson also claims the restaurant was negligent in serving him in the suit. It was not immediately clear which branch of the chain he had visited, or what he ordered. Meanwhile, Whataburger is pushing back against Wilson's allegations, requesting 'strict proof' of his claims in a separate court document filed on May 16. The Independent has reached out to Whataburger for comment. Wilson has previously sued a fast food chain over being served onions against his request. He filed a lawsuit against Sonic Drive-in last year, claiming a meal he ordered without onions also triggered an allergic reaction.

What To Know The case was filed on April 25 in Texas' 269th Judicial District Court of Harris County where the plaintiff, Demery Ardell Wilson filed a personal injury lawsuit against Whataburger. The court filing states that on July 24, 2024 Wilson was at a Whataburger "where he ate a fast-food meal and got an allergic reaction due to onions present in it after requesting no onions." It also states that Wilson had "sustained serious personal injuries" as a result. The court documents do not specify what was ordered, but the eponymous Whataburger includes an beef patty with mustard, tomato, lettuce, pickles and diced onion. In a separate court document filed on May 16, Whataburger denied the allegations and demanded "strict proof" of his assertions. In the filing, Whataburger "specifically denies Plaintiff's claim that it or any Defendant's employees were negligent." It's not the first time that Wilson has filed a lawsuit against a fast food restaurant. In 2024, he filed a lawsuit against Sonic Drive In for allegedly putting onions in his burger, which he said triggered an allergic reaction. Sonic Drive In have denied the allegations. Newsweek has contacted Sonic Drive In over email for comment. What People Are Saying Dr. Marc Goldstein, a board-certified allergist and immunologist and founding partner at The Asthma Center, in Philadelphia, PA, previously told Newsweek: "It's very important to know your allergies and then be aware of the ingredients in the foods that you eat. This means reading food labels and asking questions about ingredients and food preparations from places where you consume food (e.g. bakery, restaurants, ice cream shop)." What's Next Whataburger has not commented publicly beyond official court filings. Developments in the case remain to be seen.
