DTU welcomes new batch with orientation-cum-induction ceremony
New Delhi: DelhiTechnological University (DTU) on Monday held its annual orientation-cum-induction programme for the incoming undergraduate batch. Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood joined the event virtually as the Chief Guest, a DTU statement said. Sood, in his address, congratulated the new students for gaining admission to one of India's premier technical institutions and encouraged them to not only excel academically but also contribute meaningfully to society. Calling upon students to participate in Swachhta Abhiyan, the minister emphasised the importance of sustainable urban development and urged students to devise innovative, research-based solutions for Delhi's unique challenges. 'Your journey at DTU should prepare you not just as engineers, but as responsible citizens aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals,' he said. The event commenced with a ceremonial lamp lighting by the chief guest, Karnal Singh, former chief of the Enforcement Directorate and a 1979 batch alumnus of the erstwhile Delhi College of Engineering (DCE). To mark the occasion, the university launched the 68th edition of DTU Times and premiered a special documentary by DTU Studio, capturing the event's spirit, the statement said.

Dr Kunal Sood, an anesthesiology and interventional pain medicine physician, shared an Instagram post on July 27 to highlight what teratomas are – a type of tumour that can contain several different types of tissues, including hair, muscle, teeth, or bone. They are usually benign, he said as he reacted to a woman's video in which she expressed shock over her having the rare tumour. And that it grew so big, it twisted and killed my ovary.' In his caption, Dr Sood wrote, 'Some ovarian 'cysts' turn out to be teratomas: tumours that can contain fat, hair, or even teeth. Most are benign, but larger ones can cause serious complications like ovarian torsion, which may affect fertility. Did you know not all cysts are just cysts?' 'They can twist the ovary' In the video he posted, Dr Sood explained, 'Believe it or not, this can actually happen. Teratomas are tumours that contain hair, skin, and even teeth. They're most often found in the ovaries. They sometimes look like simple cysts on imaging. But unlike fluid-filled cysts, teratomas often contain fat or calcifications and form from germ cells, not normal ovarian tissue. Most are benign.' He added, 'But if they grow larger than 5 to 10 cm, they can twist the ovary, a complication called ovarian torsion. This cuts off blood flow and, without urgent surgery, can permanently damage or destroy the ovary, putting fertility at risk. Distinguishing between a cyst and a teratoma early is critical. Diagnosis often depends on a combination of imaging, clinical exam, and sometimes surgery to confirm.' Delhi government to honour martyrs by renaming schools, says minister
Delhi government has put forth a plan to name certain government schools after martyrs from Delhi. The idea, shared by Education Minister Ashish Sood during a Kargil Vijay Diwas gathering at Shivaji College, aims to preserve the memory of those who died in service and to offer students a steady reminder of civic duty.'It is our responsibility to keep the memories of our heroes alive,' Sood said, addressing students, faculty, and family members of martyrs present at the event. The minister stated that naming schools after martyrs would serve not only as a tribute to their sacrifice but also as a reminder to future generations about the values of service and tributes were offered to three former students of Shivaji College who lost their lives in the Kargil conflict, Captain Sumit Roy, Captain Anuj Nayyar, and Captain event was also attended by Captain Roy's mother, Swapna Roy, who joined others in remembering the young officers' highlighted the youth of these officers, noting that they were barely out of college when they took command in critical battles.'They showed the kind of leadership that is rare.
