$746,853 Jersey Cash 5 jackpot won by nine NJ lottery players. Here's their story
Sometimes you just need a shake things up to change your fortunes.
A group of nine Camden County lottery players did just that and won a $746,853 Jersey Cash 5 jackpot on June 26.
'We buy tickets every week,' said the group's leader told the New Jersey Lottery, who buys the tickets at the same Wawa. But this time the leader went to a different Wawa on Whitehorse Pike South in Lindenwold. 'I figured it was time to change our luck. It was the first time I went there.'
The leader doesn't check the tickets daily, which consist of quick picks and set numbers The winning ticket was purchased for a Thursday night drawing.
'Because I get a week's worth of numbers, I was checking the tickets late Friday night − actually Saturday morning around 1 a.m. − I'm a night owl. I said 'Let me see what we won.' I was dumbfounded. It was the quick pick that won. I kept checking and rechecking. I couldn't wait to call everybody in the morning,' the leader told the lottery agency.
After about five years of playing together, the South Jersey nine finally hit a jackpot. Each of the South Jersey nine received around $80,000 each from the jackpot.
'Nobody could believe it. They thought I was a joking! It was a blessing!' the leader said. 'Last year, we missed the Cash 5 by just one number. We were thrilled to even win that. We like the Cash 5 because it is won so much.'
The Jersey Cash 5 has been won 34 times so far in 2025.
The Camden County group has no intention of resting on its laurels after hitting a jackapot.
'We've been doing this for five years,' the leader said. 'We're going to keep playing.'
Managing a large group of people is not easy task, whether you are going out to dinner or playing the lottery. The New Jersey Lottery said there are steps lottery players should follow when making group plays.
Here is a list of recommended steps from the agency:
Know who is in your pool and record who has contributed.
Establish and agree to ground rules. Know what happens if the group wins.
Recruit a pool member as your leader. Choose wisely.
Keep all original tickets in a secure place.
Determine what game you want to play.
